This episode really helps put into perspective that Appa isn't just a pet. The things that have triggered Aang to go Avatar State were the genocide of his people, the murder of the fucking Moon, and Katara's life being at risk. Like, yes, people love their pets, but I think this episode helps frame that Appa isn't Aang's pet, he's his friend. To Aang, Appa is just as much a member of the group as Katara, Sokka, or Toph. More than that, he's known Appa the longest, so I dare say Appa is his BEST friend.

For the most part, Aang has always managed to power through most things with a smile. He lost everything he's ever known and everyone he's ever known, yet he still somehow manages to not lose himself... That is until he lost Appa. Appa was literally all he had left of the world he left behind, and the last of his dead culture (besides Momo). He also loves him more than anything and in an instant, his best friend and family was gone in the same way how his whole world was gone overnight. And it was just too much for him. This moment broke him. All the pain and anger just finally became too much and he lost himself. For the first time, Aang's looking for confrontation and a fight. We see that dark side for the first time when he went after that Buzzard-Wasp despite Momo being okay just so he could inflict some pain and hurt. This Aang honestly scares me more than Avatar State Aang... The ending was also so beautifully and masterfully done. Katara pulling Aang down and silently comforting him was such an emotionally-stirring moment. Nothing needed to be said, the visuals and music did all the talking. You could feel everything that Aang has been feeling up to that point - anger, sadness, confusion, and deep loss. Him literally crying while in the Avatar State was such a powerful image to see. He was at his strongest, but he was also so emotionally vulnerable. The contrast was beautifully sad. The music was also beautifully sad. One of the most emotional soundtracks I've heard in the show thus far. Speaking of which, major props to Katara this episode. She's honestly the MVP! When everything and everyone was falling apart, she was the glue that held all of them together. Also a little thing I noticed and loved was the fact that despite lashing out at Toph earlier, Aang instantly believed her when she pointed out that it was Ghashiun who stole Appa. Despite initially blaming her and being angry, Aang still trusts Toph without hesitation.

That ending is my second favorite moment in the entire show. Also, you have to love Tophs face as it was her first time hearing the avatar voice and she is terrified.
Ok something you missed about Aang’s temperament this episode. Aang feels so under attack because Appa is the last remaining link Aang has to the era before he was frozen. And Aang is super connected to this animal where they can practically feel each other’s feelings as his own. To have Appa stolen and maybe even taken for parts, removes the last living creature he knows of from that era. If you were that close to your pet, you’d do the same. That hug at the end had me in tears too. And I’ve seen this show more than 10 times by now. Also Sokka getting high off of cactus juice and cave sludge like a dipshit is hilarious. But comic relief is hardly Sokka’s only purpose. (Plus Momo swirling around like crazy until he crash lands is my favorite Momo moment. And there’s some pretty good contenders.)

This is a kid we've known to be a this goofy little guy, a pacifist, a kid raised by monks, who never uses offensive fighting strategies unless he absolutely has to, a kid who is even a vegetarian because that is how sacred he believes life to be! But then in that scene with the vulture bee, he kills the bee even though Momo was already saved and there was no need for him to. And that cut to how dark his expression is afterwards is just so chilling, because you see how much losing Appa has affected him. Appa's the last living connection he has to his past life a hundred years ago, I can't imagine how much it must be hurting him to lose that last connection. And it's so hard as an audience to see someone who is so characteristically positive and happy-go-lucky lose that part of themself through pain.

I just want you guys to remember that Appa is basically all that Aang has of his old normal life and the fact that he's gone is like more deviating for him then anyone else because now he is actually truly alone So while I'm not condoning him yelling at Toph like that, you don't have to be so hard on him for acting the way he is

Actually, Toph can't Sandbend. Or rather, that's too advanced for her. Remember, she attempted to, and she barely got it to move. It's a different form of Earthbending. It's also why she has a harder time using her vibration senses in sand.
@zannchristo4 жыл бұрын
I mean, she did sand bend, she just couldn't "see" right. And she was trying to stop the library from falling into the spiritual world, so... That is a pretty good hold back

I still teared up with that aang being comforted by katara. Like you feel misery and pain in aang, and you also feel empathy from katara. It's just so sad to see aang, a usually happy person, to be in this state. And yeah, avatar state is scary, but even angry aang is scary enough.
@libra96334 жыл бұрын
I was in a pit of anger when Appa was stolen from Aang, but there was no way I could be mad at Toph she absolutely did the right thing and saved them. And man oh man! When I witnessed Aang go into the avatar state like that - I kid you not the atmosphere dropped (I can’t explain it any better, it was That feeling I never thought I experience as a kid) This episode had me good! Not only that my heart leaped when katara comforted Aang.

The image of tears cascading down Aang's face as his eyes are still aglow with the infinite power and wisdom of countless Avatar's before him has been ingrained in my brain since the first time I saw this episode. Fucking spectacular.

@0wl0fth3nil3 Жыл бұрын
everything about the confrontation scene is played so so well but I love the way Aang's emotions are displayed. When he learns they muzzled Appa the avatar state kicks in and is just 100% rage and revenge, but once Katara calms him down and the anger boils away you can see that underneath it was deep, deep hurt and sorrow. Beautiful shit, especially for a kids show on nickelodeon.
@MrDaddymeez14 жыл бұрын
His attitude here seems more in-line with firebending to me. Here's how I see it: Air - is about avoiding or being clever with confrontations. Freedom Fire - is about being confrontational/taking the initiative. Ferocity Earth- is about standing up to confrontation head on. Stubborn Water- is about manipulating the situation to your benefit. Adaptive

Loved the reaction but imma need dude in the middle to cut Aang some slack. Yeah he shouldn’t take his anger out on them but y’all need to understand that Appa’s not just some pet to Aang, that’s his everything and they been through a lot together. So his anger is understandable. ❤️
@JouganHunter4 жыл бұрын
Of course it’s understandable but that doesn’t mean we have to like it. Aang was out of line for actually blaming Toph and even claiming that she let it happen on purpose.

This! Not to mention hes also 12 years old...cant imagine processing all he has lost at such a young age, and only adding Appa onto it. His behavior was unsavory, but if he acted any different, it’d take away from the depth and realistic emotions this show is so loved for. Aang in this episode is just a kid surging with pain, lashing out at anyone and anything.

I personally think that sandbenders are basically just a subcategory of earthbenders and due to their location they would do fsr better bending sand rather than solid rocks and the same foes for toph, having so much loose sand around her could potentially make it more difficult for her to earth bend considering its not something she's used to in comparison to bending solid earth/rock

This is one of the reasons Aang is such a good character, like, with the people living in the air temple, it iss war, he understood why they had to move there and make their own things, but he still gets pissed when you disrespect his culture, then goes back into being calm, like the monks teached him. Until Appa gets attacked. Then he looses his calm, gets pissed at everyone for everything and was almost willing to break his beliefs for foolish vengeance. He's a pacifist filled with power in a war. He understands things but even he loses it sometimes. So good. *And then comes fucking Korra to fuck everything up like she's the fire nation attacking*
