They have said that Jimmy had been writing this song for many year's,it was originally titled death when he gave the demo tape to Matt. They left the song as is except for adding Matt's vocals along with Jimmy's and Mike Portnoy filled in some of the drum's, Jimmy played all the music on the demo . Mike Portnoy said in an interview that it was very surreal doing the drum parts as he was literally playing along with Jimmy . Jimmy had an enlarged heart and was told at a very young age he likely would not live past 30, he even told Syn 's dad when he was a teenager that he knew 2 thing's,he was going to be part of a famous rock band and would die before he was 30. In an interview Syn said that Jimmy was in bad condition shortly before his death,simply saying "he was broken",they could see it ,he had gained some weight,was very pale and said you could hear it in his voice. They said he hardly slept and pushed very hard to get the album finished,in fact when he gave demo to Matt he said "there's the last song for the album,now it's finished". I believe he knew his time was short . Such a loss , he was such a talented exceptional musician, song writer and brother to his band mates. Godspeed Jimmy"the Rev" Sullivan.

Fiction is also considered as his "suicide letter" so REV def knew when he delivered this song. That makes the lyrics even more powerful to me!
@randypion58032 жыл бұрын
Yes he was,the sad thing is at the time he was not recognized as such. It was only later that many started listening closely to the song's he wrote and work on the drum's. What people don't realize is he didn't write as many songs for a7x that they think. I seen in the documentary for the making of "little piece of heaven" that the first song he wrote for a7x was afterlife. Which makes you think,wow he had just started figuring it out and wrote so many great song's,think of what was still to come.

The story of Fiction: (A little pre-context - in the band’s last performance with The Rev (Sonisphere August 2009), it is clearly noticeable that The Rev has gained weight. Depression? Maybe.) So on December 25, 2009, The Rev went up to M.Shadows (lead vocalist) and handed him a CD with the Fiction demo on it, which was originally titled “Death.” The Rev handed him the CD and said “I feel like I’ve given you guys everything I can on this album. I don’t know what else you guys have, but I’ve given you guys everything.” Three days later, The Rev is found dead in his home. The Fiction version he gave him was a demo - which means it’s just a general sound of the song’s direction and usually contains mumbled sounds and no lyrics. The Rev recorded himself “singing,” playing an electric drum kit, and played the organ. Mysteriously, the vocals you hear on the official Fiction song done by The Rev are the actual demo words he said. This is why there is speculation around the song, because even though he was not really supposed to be saying anything, he chose to sing lyrics about moving on after death. Again, this song was titled “Death.” The band wanted to give a tribute to The Rev so they isolated the vocals from the demo and used them on the official version. They later changed the name from “Death” to “Fiction,” which was a nickname for The Rev and what he had tattooed down his stomach. They finished writing the lyrics to it, had their fill in at the time Mike Portnoy play the drum parts, and had M.Shadows sing the verses. Jessi Collins also appears in the song, being the voice between the final chorus and The Rev’s final verse. The original story of The Rev’s death goes that he was hungover from a friend’s wedding reception and took pain killers to ease the headaches. He then went to sleep; a sleep which would turn eternal. He had too much alcohol left in his system, and the reaction with the medication caused an overdose. In an interview concerning whether or not he thought The Rev committed suicide, M.Shadows said that he is not ruling it out. But that the last time he saw The Rev was December 26, where he was playing the piano and laughing with friends and family. Edit: The last time anyone saw Jimmy was at a wedding reception, the night before he passed away. Matt’s wife has the last picture of Jimmy - sitting at a piano, surrounded by his loved ones. Also, in a 2010 interview, Synyster Gates is adamant that The Rev knew what he was doing. He said “He planned it all, that crazy fuck. Knew he was gonna be gone by 30.”
@hubertcain55732 жыл бұрын
This is the only comment that ive read so far that makes sense. From my understanding The REV was born with an enlarged heart that would kill him by 30 and it would only cause him more pain as he got older. Now if you listen closely to the song Brompton Cocktail( which from my understanding the REV wrote the lyrics himself) it speaks of someone wanting to end life because of a sickness that is ravaging their body. A message? Perhaps. Now take into consideration the lyrics from Fiction that only the REV wrote. It is his way of saying goodbye to his loved ones. When you listen to both songs its hard not to think that one of the greatest drummers of all times had indeed commited suicide. He had been on medication for years and knew what dose to properly take. That and the simple fact that he and the other members of the band drank on the regular, it is hard to see his death as a mere "bad mixture"

I doubt anyone will see this due to the months that have passed since this was posted, but, as a vet (and bare with me), until your interpretation at the end I had not seen it that way. I still have my best friend's last voicemail on my phone - I now hear that in a different light. For 11 years, I have listened to that as a rebuke of "why didn't you answer when I needed you" and I now hear that as "I love you, brother. Carry on without me." I would never hold anyone accountable for my actions, and for 11 years I felt he held me accountable for his final action. I have always heard this song as a suicide note that no one heard, and YOU changed that. Thank you.

The Rev is having an issue with his heart based on some literrature I read. Since then, the Rev was having a vision of himself became famous etc and died before 30 years old. But the ugly truth is, the Rev died due to drugs complication he had, you know that "brompton cocktail" thingy, alcohol and anti depressant mixtures overdose. So yes, he'd rather die with his own hands rather because of his disease. -RIP the Rev- I'd love to see Almost Easy reaction, since there's the Rev's background vocals in it.

always interpreted these lyrics as basically the Rev flirting with suicide, *fiction*alizing the act, but never going far enough with it ("not that I would, or that I could")... Tho, like he admits ("let it burn under my skin"), those thoughts were always crawling back their way in. love So Far Away, but imo this one just hits so much harder... it is just so eerie, to wonder about what was going on inside his head when he wrote the song.

The Rev was sick for many years. I believe he had an enlarged heart that caused many health problems. A severely underrated song written by him, on their self titled album, called Brompton Cocktail. The song is about a man who knows he’s going to die but wants to go out on his own terms. A brompton cocktail is a concoction of strong drugs such as heroin, cocaine, pure alcohol and morphine. The cocktail went on to mean any combination of drugs in which it’s purpose is to kill someone, typically one’s self. It was used to put terminally I’ll patients out of their misery. 3 days after the Rev gave M Shadows the CD for fiction (in which he had already recorded all the instrumentals for and his vocals) he died. He died from an over dose of a mixture of deadly doses of pills and alcohol. It’s still debated if it was a suicide or an accidental overdose. I think due to the lyrics of Brompton Cocktail and Fiction, the latter which he turned in 3 days prior to his death, that it most likely suicide. It was almost poetic the way the songs played out. He knew he was going to die young due to his disease anyway and wanted to go on his own terms.
