"Anything to do with music instruments in films people just wanna make it look cool. Whether it's actually real or not does not matter." I think that sums up the entire representation of music and instruments in every movie and series ever (with veeeeery few exceptions).

but guqing and guzheng is night and day visually and in sound. this is not a viola vs violin where it looks super similar and the sound is similar to musically untrained ears. Pretty sure if someone called cello a violin, people will care and does matter.

Regarding Xiang Liu's scene, after the qin playing scene was released and received negative comments, Tan Jianci apologized and took all the blame on himself. But it's clear in the behind-the-scenes video that he was just imitating exactly what the teacher taught. The teacher also revealed that this was a temporary additional scene, the actor only learned a few hours before filming. So I have a hard time understanding why the writer and director decided to film this scene? Both the logic of the story and the filming effect and post-production editing were not good. In the end, the negative opinion was directed towards the actor alone, I felt sad for him.

the nail part is so fascinating because firstly i wondered how that impacted the lives of professional qin players in the past like did they have to avoid any physical activity to avoid breaking their nails and you said they don’t use fake nails but i wonder if there’s some sort of gel nail that’s soft enough to replicate human nails if a modern player was to break a nail
@quynhdao2512
@quynhdao2512 Ай бұрын
If you only need about 2mm, the nails can grow out in about a week? And also, even in ancient time, there were many rich people hiring musicians just for background music at parties, so the music did not need to be top notch. If the musicians were to prepare for a big competition or presentation such as performing solo, they would take extreme care of their instruments and hands and nails, like they had servants doing everything else so there were no chance of breaking a nail.

Such a great video, reminds me of the classic TwoSet violin debunking videos. I find myself now wanting to get my hands on a Qin! Particularly enjoyed the maths-y nerdy deep dive at the end - stringed instruments are so fascinating and I want to play around 😢 As a somewhat musical individual I have often queried the 'playing' depicted in dramas and am glad to be properly educated. Especially on Chinese and other Eastern instruments as my knowledge is purely of the Western tradition. I feel like a lot of flute scenes are also dubious as well. Woodwind is not my specialty however! WoH theme is sooooooo pretty

A lot of her opinions are not on point though. For example, she despite actors’ acting and efforts, and keep ranting on their accents. One of the reasons why all C-Dramas have subtitles because it is a big country with many different accents. But this lady wants all the actors to have Beijing accent, or some type of standard accent. She said like those actors can’t speak standard Mandarin. But hell no, they do speak Mandarin, just very differently because of where they’re from. People defended here by saying it’s the actors bad at reading the lines. But it’s how they talk in their respected regions. You can’t expect everyone speak in the same tone, or same way. I have learned how to play violin for 2 years and I can’t even play a simple piece right. Actors are supposed to learn but they can’t play like professionals. The main part is cutting and editing with the hand doubles. But Avenue X’s problem is the hate on the actors while it’s clearly problem from the production team.
@cassball7
@cassball7 Ай бұрын
@@nguyenthiphuonganh Do you speak Mandarin? Do you understand current Chinese culture? As someone learning Mandarin the Beijing accent is actually the standard. I've taken classes with teachers in China and I was taught by several teachers the Mandarin sound. The average news caster in English has a Beijing accent. Even in Taiwan there is a standard accent for newscasters. Even in American dramas the accents have to be specific to the area the person represents when acting. If there is a certain way of playing gu qin then reflect that. Play in the right position and have the actual gu qin set up correctly. If you have a problem with Avenue X then don't watch her reviews. It's not that hard!
@nguyenthiphuonganh
@nguyenthiphuonganh Ай бұрын
@@cassball7 why actors need to have standard accent? According to your point, if I have problem with her review, I shouldn’t watch her videos, so you should apply your point to AvenueX’s review. If she has problem with C-drama, she shouldn’t watch any Chinese drama. Don’t be ignorant! I’m from the early,1980s, growing up with classic films, directors, novelists and actors, I’m difficult too. We all know how good filming, good directing, good screen-writing are. Have you seen people complaining about Christ Hemsworth, Nicole Kidman, or British actors’ accents? Note that I’m from Vietnam, we share similar culture to Chinese, I also learned Chinese, I have read all Jin-Yong and Gu-Long novels. i have read most of new generation of Chinese novels that made into dramas. Do you think just because she used to work in filming industry and just she knows stuff. Hell no, we all know. We watch C.drama hours a day, from TVB, to ATV … every version of any novel.

@@cassball7 do you know why people like twoset-violin’s reaction videos of movies about musical instruments? Because they have the right points! You should know those AvenueX reviewed C-dramas are long-ass dramas, they’re not about musical instruments, NOT about music. what she should blame is the professionals that production team hired to help the actors, or the editors, director. There's a scene in Ep 5 where the Emperor is playing Qin and AS SOON as I saw that scene I was like OMG AVENUEX TALKED ABOUT THIS and paused it to watch it frame by frame. From what I could see and all the points you talked about, it looked super legit! I mean the actor didn't have long enough nails on his right hand and I could hear a little bit where the hand didn't match the music layover (it sounds like a string was plucked but he didn't move his right hand) but those were pretty minor points. All the positioning and sitting and hand movements were good enough to me haha. Just wanted to say this, it made watching the drama extra exciting for me.

I just want to say that your playing of this instrument is amazing. You are intelligent and talented also. Thank you for explaining things to those of us not familiar with instruments. You are also able to teach others which is a talent in of itself. You are a joy to watch for me. I can always learn things from your videos and enjoy you so much. Your knowledge of costumes from different periods, whether scenery is natural, props, consistent etc... is so interesting. I always notice if things look too fake (plants, trees, flowers etc..) and though I love fantasy/magic etc.. I dislike always seeing fake flowers and things of that nature. I enjoy some of the beautiful songs that play during some of the dramas (no modern stuff) but oddly when I watch dramas (non Chinese) I prefer British dramas over American ones because they are more natural and the people are more apt to look like regular people rather than glamourous movie stars. I seem to always like period dramas whether Chinese or British and some old American stuff because I am older, have always been modest, don't curse and don't want to hear bad language or see naked people. I was considered very old fashioned even when I was very young so I am really out of step with the modern generation. I was what they called an old soul. I am grateful for the Chinese period dramas where people still behave with dignity even if they do seem repetitive when it comes to jealousy etc.. People must be very idle to have time to be jealous over others or stir up plots out of hatred or revenge. Oops, I have rambled. I am looking forward to more of your videos.

When you raised this idea to do the video, I wanted to suggest you consider a video on wedding customs and attire per dynasty--why green vs red gown? why circle fan vs veil? why the big fat ball/ribbon to hold vs not? Why walking over a saddle only for female sometimes? Is the bowing to heaven, parents, and each other standard? etc. I bet that the dramas just take creative license to stage the ceremony but I'd appreciate knowing the true historical elements. Thanks!

Thanks for making and sharing this video. I find it very education and interesting. I have played guzheng before but only as a beginner a long time ago. And wow, Qin is really on another level itself. Such beautiful instruments. You played it so well. I wonder how many years of experience you've had to be that good? I always tried to look away from the actor's hands and just focus either on their face or elsewhere when they are playing the qin as it always feels like a slap in the face and it would disrupt my attention and my immersion into the story.

What an entertaining and informative video! ❤ Now do horseback riding! Not just in historic, but in modern “rich heir” dramas (even recent one with Dylan Wang)…so painful!

So many actors have to do horseback riding in historical dramas, and I wonder where they learn it. Is that a skill taught at drama schools? (Not being sarcastic here...) I suppose they must take a lot of physical training courses like how to look like they're fighting or how to fall correctly and how to fence/use a sword and other weapons....

Wu Lei has such potential, I think he could really do a lot in his 30s if he gets a few more skills and tightens up his acting. He could even stream his progress and partner with affordable chinese instrument manufacturers and even have some short (12 episode max) dramas about chinese instruments, I'm sure some actors and actresses know how to play.

Thank you so much for this interesting education. It was very insightful on the one hand. On the other hand I have regrets. Just because my music education makes so many instruments in TV and Movies look unbearable and now I have added yet another one to the list of those I cannot unsee XDDD

Fascinating tutorial. I wonder how many times the jarring (for me at least) actor playing/music not matching the movements is a post production decision done in the editing room. I can't remember in which drama I saw the main character playing the flute and her fingering changes were matching the note changes (I have no idea if she was playing the right notes but the movement matched the tempo). In a second and third scene much later she is playing and the music tempo had nothing in common with her finger movement. I have seen something similar in a non chinese series in which a little girl was singing a song and they changed it for another one: the lip movement had nothing to do with what was dubbed. Thank the postprod team for ruining a scene 🤦🏻‍♀️

That was informative. Taking your advice, they could at least make it look real. You might want to take on sword fighting next. I give Wu Lei 'E' for effort as he seems to be very dedicated to always learn the skills he needs to use in order to play certain character traits more authentically in his dramas.

Thanks for this post. It was very, very informative. Now I need to go back and take a look at a tv show from a few years ago - 三生三世枕上书。I want to see how accurately the 古琴 playing is in that show. In one episode, there is a contest between students who are learning to play the flute. The Dilraba Dilmurat character Baifeng Jiu is one of the students and her romantic love interest, the Gao Wei Guang character Donghua Dijun is the contest judge. The students playing the flute have a to accompany a 古琴 player and it happens that the character playing the 古琴 is also competing for the affections of Donghua Dijun so it adds some drama to that particular episode.

If you have friends that plays other instruments too, it would be so cool to see the mistakes on other instruments as well. I think the actors and the crew should take a little time to at least understand the instruments they are supposed to be the expert in. It’s also to show respect to the craft. Thanks for taking the time to teach us about beautiful Chinese instruments.

I love your guqin videos. You have made great progress! Play something in the next stream please. 🙏 I started playing the guqin during the Covid lockdowns and I really like the instrument, although I can't keep my nails long enough to make the right sound because it interferes with my flute playing. I'm looking forward to your next guqin video. 👍
