I think this is just the lifecycle of, especially, older KZbinrs. Back when the monetization wasn't very popular so they just danced between getting crazy cheques every month. Then, once they dry up (after 5-10 years); they haven't adapted to change so just end up being lazier & lazier while still expecting the same respect. Only very few creators make it big as long as AVGN & even then that's likely ALL the money they will earn in their life (won't get a IRL job).

I feel like this episode could work IF: a) it was a part of a larger episode centered around visual novels b) he went all meta with it and made a critique on modern-day KZbin: James/Nerd is burned out, but he needs to fulfill his sponsorship contracts, so he just makes a low-quality review using old J&MM footage, etc., etc. As is, I find it so utterly baffling that it's honestly kind of fascinating to me. I'd love to read some behind-the-scenes on this one.
@battango6 ай бұрын
Talking about your second point: lack of structure is one of the greatest sins of modern-AVGN in my opinion. The "narrative" episodes have either zero pay-off, or they botch the pay-off, and often there is no narrative conceit behind the episode whatsoever. For example, AVGN 200 could've been a season-long arc, where he goes into LJN games, the history of LJN, and realises there's a reason that games coming out badly. He could even relate this to his own work as the Nerd - maybe having a mea culpa for the AVGN-movie. Then he could've followed it with a season looking at "good" games, where he was unable to contain his frustration, and eventually got AVGN-pilled back into raging again. What's frustrating is that the germ of these ideas does exist within the episodes we actually get, but the scripts feel like sub-first draft level nonsense, which has been rushed out the door. So many episodes are a kind of un-structured soup with skits mixed in, and half way through you have no idea where it's supposed to be going, and want to escape.
@RustyNickels6 ай бұрын
Bimmy used to seem so annoyed with shitty games that he almost seemed depressed as a result and it made the stuff he said and did so much funnier. For example, "You'd rather drown in gasoline." I think what’s extra sad is how much AVGN is a reminder of how old and uncool we all are getting. How being stuck in the past, unable to move on, caged by the demand of his self created format, that it is at times comical in the way that it dispenses our own fears of being caught in the same way. At some base intuitive level I feel that our collective love/hate with James is based from that.

@SilverSpade926 ай бұрын
I disagree with this whole premise. James being uncool now is not an age thing. I think that's quite ageist. Being stuck in the past is not some inevitable part of aging, and I think the problem with James is that a lot of his fans feel like they've outgrown him. It's not that he's older that's the problem, but rather how he pretends he isn't. It just doesn't work. It feels inauthentic and lame. Frankie and E.J. are pretty cool. They feel authentic.

Since his kids are grown now (as in, not babies, as far as I'm aware), the whole 'no time' thing is probably because he edits through the night (he did mention he's a 'night owl'). But as everyone points out in the comments, you should treat the video production as your 9-5 job. I'm a single father with 100% custody and somehow I manage to take care of my daughter while working full time, spending time with her, taking care of the house and whatever's left for my hobbies, like most people with regular jobs. It's difficult, for sure, but again, most people have to do it. He lacks efficiency and just doesn't seem to care other than 'it's better than a regular job'. We all understand it, but if he wants to keep an audience then do something else instead of AVGN. He always seemed more sincere when talking about movies anyway. I get that he's burned out of content in general, but in that case he should take some actual time off to rest. The older videos work as passive income anyway. Big Ryan fan btw
@grandmasterestrada15926 ай бұрын
Cinemassacre was a lot more fun when he did his movie reviews, Monster Madness, and even random stuff like his TMNT Pizza Party special with his friends. James himself seems to be going through a midlife crisis, and seems to be uncomfortable that his legacy is the Nerd, and not as a film maker. That may be why he has also fallen out of love with the Nerd in general. He resents that it wasn't a springboard into bigger things. In contrast, Doug Walker seems relatively content with the Critic being what he's remembered for.
@RxYouth6 ай бұрын
I think the "lacks efficiency" is the biggest problem here. He probably does spend a lot of time doing some of this stuff, he just goes about it so completely back-asswards and in such convoluted ways that everything takes him so much longer than it ever needs to be. Altho this is also a guy who considers running small normal errands throughout the day as part of his job. Also to your other point, what about his wife, where is she in all this? As far as we know she doesnt really work and should be able to take on the parental role for James to accomplish whatever he needs or wants to, especially since he's the sole bread winner in the family. His kids should both be full time students by now too. There's just really no excuse at this point to still be crying about having no time or using muh kids as a crutch or shield.

Like dude bought 3 different GTA Vs and 2 damn consoles so he could capture the gameplay. Like dude... Just connect your PC to the tv with a HDMI cable, get the game from Steam and capture everything using OBS software. Dude overcomplicates EVERYTHING!!! Imagine the time it took to buy games, consoles, move this, connect that, just to capture GTAV gameplay!!!

@@karlimo4034 oh yeah, the way he does everything is so backasswards and inefficient its insane. He always talks about having "no time" yet the way he goes about it all causes him to waste much more time than if he just learned to do it correctly or paid a little for better gear. Look at his entire BTS video from a few years back, its beyond crazy, starts off saying the audio isn't working correctly which is an easy fix, zip tying tripod lights to the ceiling, keeping the camera locked down on a piece of wood, thats bolted down, problems with capturing footage, shows his old outdated teleprompter, just so many little things and then he complains how it takes too much time to move lights or change camera angles, all of which would be an easy fix. There's tons of examples of this stuff over the years tho, he even claimed running personal errands during the day is part of his job and takes up lots of his time or how he spent lots of time just transferring files. This is also the guy who hired a production company that shouldve taken care of all the technical issues so he could focus on the creative aspects yet instead he farmed out lots of the creative stuff while he tinkered with all these small technical issues. From his book we learned he's super ahhtistic tho which I had speculated for years after he mentioned he went to special school (not class but school) for 7 years. If you've never been on the cinemassacre truth sub I'd highly recommend it, there's some amazingly creative people there and the memes can be top notch if you know the lore and you'll probably learn a lot of stuff too. It's the only sub I still occasionally visit and people there put in a lot more time and effort and produce more laughs than anything Bimmys done in years. That BTS vid was actually a direct result of the subs criticisms, hence why he called us fans of the "asshoIeish variety"

I've always been of the opinion that AVGN has stayed pretty steady in terms of quality for years. To me it's always been 7/10 entertainment with the occasional Gem episode, and the occasional 'just ok' one.I think the Quality drop in Cinemassacre content has been almost exclusively related to the other content on the channel. This horse Prince Episode broke that for me though. Its the only AVGN episode I've ever turned off before the end. I agree with all of your critiques, but the thing that really put me off was the lazy sound editing. If you watch older AVGN videos James rarely has background music playing when he's on camera, and then when the camera goes back to the game, the BGM plays. Here the soundtrack just plays through even when James is on camera, which makes sense as this is essentially a reaction video. What most KZbinrs do here is edit the BGM to be lower in the audio mix when the face is on camera giving the illusion that the viewer is seeing the content from the 'Stars' perspective. The fact that wasn't done here dissapointed me, as its something I learnt to do early on as a content creator, and here there's a channel with over 3 million subscribers seemingly just lazily putting an unedited BGM track on a sound layer and thinking its OK to put out.

So often, you say out loud something that I have thought but never been able to put to words why I don't like. I feel like AVGN should like in the modern world but constantly be looking backwards. But it is not like he is stuck in a time warp. Look no further than Mike, the inspiration for the AVGN character. He plays and obsesses over retro games but he still owns a smartphone. I never thought it was funny or made much sense for AVGN to have ancient technology. I think him not knowing much about modern VIDEO GAMES is totally fine, but not knowing what a iPhone is too far.

I'm sure I'll pick it up again, but it's been nice not to hold myself to an unnecessary deadline which forces me to cut corners and not actually grow my content. Especially when it's just some stuff I want to do instead of what I feel other people want to make. Which is what James is currently going through. Can't manage his time and he can't take a break to re-adjust the character. He's still stuck in his 20s. The character needs to just grow up. the AVGN dad era would be refreshing. Complaints about modern gaming being difficult to get into with a kid and a wife and other responsibilities of a guy in his 40s.

The reason why we always ask for more Bimmy coverage is because it makes for a good podcast. Look how many times EJ laughed this time, instead of being monotone and irritated by bad media. Bimmy-talk brings out the best in EJ and the jokes just start rolling fast and hard. Your videos would be so much better if you made jokes in eight directions. What were they thinking?

The AVGN character's anachronism was never shied away from during the show's "vintage" era or whatever you want to call it. He showed Xbox 360 and Wii boxes in those episodes, so we can conclude that it never denied that the show existed in the current year. The Pong Consoles episode had a sincerely funny punchline that contrasted the simplicity of Pong with the carnage and mayhem of modern Grand Theft Auto games. Bimmy's current handlers (whoever they are) have no ability to understand the comedic approach of earlier uploads. There is a way to make 2024 Cinemassacre respectable even if relevance to the current KZbin audience isn't very possible. What they're doing is not respectable and not relevant.

My understanding was that he was like the real Mike. He was obsessed with the retro games, but he would still own a smart phone and use the internet. He wasn't living in 1980s culture beyond video games and maybe movies. I am really glad these two acknowledged that point because it always bothered me when he would make that joke but I never would think anyone else noticed it.

What surprise me the most, are his fans, look at this comment from his latest episode: "I can't believe this series is as old as I am lol. This has to be the most consistent and rewatchable series on the internet". I was like did you see his episode with the horse prince?.

Here's some ideas James could try to reinvigorate the channel (Justin, I know you read these comments. Feel free to steal these): 1) Actually do an episode-by-episode review series of Family Matters (or similar show). Allison Pregler does that with Baywatch and Baywatch Nights and its pretty fun. 2) Talk about his favorite MST3K episodes. I presume he watched the show because he's mentioned it and obviously the classic Nerd episodes drew some inspiration from it. 3) Do a "First Time Watching" series on The Simpsons. There's tons of nostalgia-within-nostalgia that could come from those early episodes. 4) Ranking every Schwarzenegger movie (or Stallone movie, or Van Damme move, etc...). He could get a few episodes out of this and would play to his wheelhouse of 80s/90s movies. Possible collab with Doug Walker. 5) Legos. I'm sure he played with them, and I'm sure his kids play with them. Share Lego memories and compare/contrast Legos then and Legos now. 6) Discuss the history of Halloween costumes and/or review the Halloween costumes he and his friends wore as kids. 7) Roll out a few more board game reviews, even if they don't fit into the "continuity" of the Board James series. Granted, he may have already covered all the unusual games he has personal experience with, but it might be interesting just to hear him cover Scrabble or Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit. 8) Do an episode on the Y2K bug and how it impacted culture. Granted I haven't looked for it, but as much as millennials and gen x-ers reference it, I don't think I've ever seen anyone do a systematic breakdown of the phenomenon around it. 9) Get meta. He's one of the grand daddies of KZbin creators. Do a retrospective on how its changed and evolved over the years. The thing you'll notice about these suggestions is that they all make more use of James than of The Nerd. Frankly, the character has run its course. Maybe, MAYBE, there's still something out there for that character to cover well, but it's time to really branch out more into the James-as-a-personality content. Honestly, that time was probably many years ago.

There are theories on the truth sub that his current affect and the personality changes since "classic AVGN" might be due to medication, what do you guys think?
@eye_made_this6 ай бұрын
Maybe, but also he’s no longer a 20 year old. It reminds me of Jay and Bob, they seem like they are doing impressions of their older selves, same with James.
@DrPooks6 ай бұрын
Unlikely. There are very few prescription medications that would permanently change your affect and personality so consistently for so long. In theory, recreational drugs have a greater reputation for altering their user's nature for good. But I don't think that's the case with James here either.
@J-ayJ6 ай бұрын
@@DrPooks There are quite a number of prescribed medications that DO in fact as you said, have a great potential to permanently change your affect and personality- quite consistently. I can't say for sure about many outside a few that I personally know can do this (out of the more likely several) that after you stop the meds, but so long as your on them they absolutely are capable of that sort of thing. To include the potential even more so as your dosages increase over time especially. This goes for both illicit and prescription drugs. Start takin' cocktails of pills prescribed out the ass in as many colors as the rainbow, and before ya know it- you might get weird, fat, and just plain "all f*cked up." In all seriousness, I loved James Rolfe for so long. Cinemassacre was my favorite KZbin channel from ages like 10 to maybe 23. But the new content is so bad that it kinda turns me off from the channel in general. Listening to the old stuff isn’t as fun knowing how bad Cinemassacre would become. Neighbor Nerds is just pathetic. As bad as Video Rentals or whatever it was called.

God, that awful, desperate fake laughing...Also, you'd think he would've realized that having that bright light shining right on the top of his head was going to accentuate his bald spot. I'm not one of the ones who's always harping on his hair, but I really wonder if this isn't a repeat of the crustache incident - where he's being purposefully defiant about doing something about it, and it's literally become this...glaring...problem as a result. I suspect James has a touch of pathological demand avoidance as a comorbidity of the ADHD, given how stubborn he is about taking good advice. I'm with you guys about Justin, btw. For whatever his personal flaws may be, he's honestly tried to help James bring in more money off of his content (for better or worse). He was doing his job, but Bimmy seemingly sabotaged all efforts by being awkward and uninteresting. If you've ever seen the WATP episode about the Cinemassacre Toast Crunch Podcast, they were right on about Justin practically kicking James under the table to get him to talk about video games he plays, among many other ways he tries to get that clueless dork to promote himself to his audience. James either can't comprehend it, or is deliberately digging his heels in to NOT give his audience what it wants...and I suspect it's the latter.
