Avoiding Toxic People: The Secret to Long Life? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The world's oldest person, Maria Branyas, has died aged 117. She attributed her longevity to a number of things, including luck, good genes, and avoiding toxic people. But Branyas is not the only one who considers avoiding toxicity the secret to long life. Plenty of research says that healthy relationships are the key to longevity. So how can we achieve them? Who are toxic people? And what can we do to avoid them? Palki Sharma tells you.

I had a friend when I was 18yr old... She came in my life as if she was very kind and helpful person..she had a very cute non harmful personality but soon she turned into a narcissistic friend who used to sulk when I perform good than her ,she used to comment on my appearance and in a very subtle manner I didn't even realise what she wanted to say, sometimes she would just gaslight me whenever I questioned her intentions about the comment she made on me but she used to blame me for overthinking and overeacting. Before meeting her I was a healthy person, i had a glowing skin, I had normal weight and I was doing good in my life after meeting her I got high blood pressure, my face started looking dull and lost all my confidence , I got obesity and went into depression within a year, I didn't realise it for 3 years until I did...and then I distanced myself from her.. and Im happy and healthy again..it's true toxic people are energy vampires.

My family is toxic. Thanks to them, I have depression, high blood pressure and stress. I own a house in family yard and that's the problem now. They smile in your face and they are stabbing you in the back. My positive relationship is with my children. I show them love everyday and they give me love in return. I wish I could just get hypnotized to forget all that they have done to me and are doing to me at the moment.

We attract the kind of people we are. If we're surrounded by toxic people, self reflection is necessary. Our world is a reflection of our thoughts and while we can't control others, we can control our thoughts and reactions that help keep away the ppl we don't want in our lives.

Hi Palki, My favorite Judge, Judith Sheindlin, had a tv show called Judge Judy. She states, if something doesn’t make sense, it’s probably not true. She’s absolutely true. Folks of Trinidad & Tobago always said: birds of a feather flock together. This is also true. For example, go on any college campus, or in high school, and you’ll notice all the straight A students hangout together; those who like to party are in one group, and those who use drugs and alcohol are in another group. Now, tell me, how could a non-toxic person get him or herself into a toxic relationship? This makes no sense to me. There are striking differences between toxic and non-toxic people. Individuals who are toxic, are users, opportunists, always trying to reap where they did not sow, and in doing so, cause a tremendous amount of discord and unhappiness to others. Non-toxic individuals are peaceful, caring, and always concern for others they don’t know, without pay or applause. So, how will these two types of personalities have anything in common? Here is a larger scale example, in US, prescription drug abuse is the Nation's fastest-growing drug problem and has been classified as an epidemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according www.justice.gov/usao-edca/prescription-drug-abuse About 20% of American adults (about 28 million people) have an alcohol use disorder; only about 7% of those people ever get treatment, according www.addictioncenter.com/addiction/addiction-statistics/#:~:text=About%2020%25%20of%20American%20adults,those%20people%20ever%20get%20treatment. Among people aged 12 or older in 2021, 61.2 million people (or 21.9 percent of the population) used illicit drugs in the past year, according to www.hhs.gov/about/news/2023/01/04/samhsa-announces-national-survey-drug-use-health-results-detailing-mental-illness-substance-use-levels-2021.html#:~:text=Among%20people%20aged%2012%20or,drugs%20in%20the%20past%20year. And, 22.8% of U.S. adults experienced mental illness in 2021 (57.8 million people). This represents 1 in 5 adults, according to www.nami.org/about-mental-illness/mental-health-by-the-numbers/#:~:text=22.8%25%20of%20U.S.%20adults%20experienced,represents%201%20in%205%20adults. Moreover, US is behind in school rankings around the world, www.thebalancemoney.com/the-u-s-is-losing-its-competitive-advantage-3306225 Add the percentage and it’s over 60%, and this does not include the percentage for prescription drugs. Then they say, come on in; the water is fine. NO, the water is not fine, but changes of implementation must be made, period. I once had a student who told me he was in jail, so I asked if he plans to go back, and he said no miss. I told him let’s see what we can do so you graduate high school. I did not need to know why he went to jail, how long he spent, or what he did to get there, because I do not emphasize with foolishness, but I will do all I can to make sure he goes in a better direction than he did before. Lastly, the Bible tell us to stay away from toxic people. 2 Corinthians 6:14, KJV 14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? See, there you have it.

Believe in One God. God don't eat or drink He is not born nor He tastes death and there is nothing like Him. It is idolatry worshipping created things over Creator.

Kindly do tell me, what a person (especially a young girl - in India) should do to avoid toxic people. In this case a parent (father) is alcoholic. He has ben abusing physically (beating) and mentally (uses most vulgar word - continuously), can not leave as no other option of income. Now it leads to panic attacks, whenever he drinks. Fear, anger, jealous, sadness, pain and most importantly helplessness feels to the core. Corroded the mind, forgetting things, health issues. And sees no option

When you stay healthy and successful with somebody know it's working, vice - versa implies keep them at bay. Or if you feel like one, change yourself and realise they are ones. Then take it till you can, or keep them at bay.
