As a fan of hers for over 60 years, I think I have run out of superlatives to describe Doris Day.

Doris got her start in show biz as a dancer, broke her leg and her singing took over. I love her voice

I think people forget that both, Doris Day was a great tap dancer, and that Gene Nelson has to be one of the most underrated tap dancers of all time. There is a scene in this film (not shown) where he does an acrobatic dance with The Page Cavanaugh Trio, actually jumping up atop the upright piano while he is tap dancing ! There TRULY isn't anybody today with such musical talents .

@@alexkije I think what this person meant is that Nelson never got the recognition he deserved for his talents. He could dance as well as Astaire and Kelly, and was more versatile than either one of them, and he was a terrific actor, both comedic and dramatic (which neither Astaire or Kelly was), and could actually sing well (definitely something that neither Kelly or Astaire could do).

Preach!!! That guy is my HERO of all times, and oh for the days when entertainers had TALENT instead of just animal sex appeal, and their art took TIME, PRACTICE and good producers by the bucket load, and most of all...was LOVELY! Actually beautiful, not just.....a wild, "self expression" of rebellion against anything and everything! Lol. Gene Nelson is truly the best of all time, King among hoofers!

They were both great dancers! Gene was incredible and he wasn't appreciated as much as he should have been, but he did have a great career!

omg u know what, if a time machine was possible (and if it wouldn't alter our timeline lol), I wouldn't want to go back to the 50's to see her, because we already know what she could do back then so, instead I would bring 20 year old Doris to the future and see what she could achieve with today's resources. It's certain that she would OWN the entertainment business, snatch wigs, and take her rightful crown as the BOSS ASS QUEEN that she is and that's that on that 💁‍♀️

Well, those days are sadly gone now. I remember when a kid in the 60s after school there was a fun show called Dialing For Dollars that played good old movies like this and during the breaks could win cash if they read your name. Now after school our kids come home and are subjected to Ellen the FREAK show? Nice. The world as we once knew and loved it is coming to an end. ##d xss-

The ultimate justification for the much-abused studio system is that it could take a diffident band singer such as Doris, who had given up hoofing after an accident, and turn her into quite the triple threat: a comedic actress of sunny charm (often disparaged by critics of the day, now precious bc it is in such short supply among today's Hollywood ladies); a nifty dancer when she had to be; and a singer of warmth and tenderness, the female Crosby. Gene Nelson had the same versatility. His virile athleticism was dazzling. The eclipse of original musical movies was his loss and ours.

Great dancing from Doris and Gene. It's worth looking at the same number, performed by Tom Patricola and Joan Leslie in the film "Rhapsody in Blue". It may not have the same brilliance as this version, but it has lots of character.

The pic has four choreographers logged: the brothers Eddie and LeRoy Prinz, Gene Nelson and a guy called Al White who soon went into TV. IIRC White specialized in ensembles. Gene did his own stuff, as per, and the prolific but run-of-the-mill Prinzes probably schooled Doris. Don't see any sign of the Great God Pan in the credits- he was mostly working for Metro then- but he might well have influenced things. By 1951 he was the acknowledged main man of dance directors.
