The range of the anti AWACS missile is interesting...did they have a fighter carrying a radar capable of shooting it from a stand off of that range? Or was the idea using a ground radar to feed info to the fighter for the launch? Gonna have to go read up on this one. Great video.

Makes you wonder why you couldn’t have something akin to an Air to Air harm missile. Designed to home in on an aircrafts radar emissions, at least up to terminal phase homing where it could switch to radar or IR. Then you’d have an almost entirely passive missile, no active radar emissions to give the target even a hint that they are being targeted. You could engage at long range while maintaining complete emcon. I mean, I’m talking out my ass here, I don’t know if that would be possible, or if it’s done and isn’t common knowledge but still.

When it comes to shooting at a Target remember they are radar guided missiles not info guided missiles. The closest thing I think we have to this are Tomahawks but they use satellite GPS and that doesn't work well for moving targets. The other thing being wire-guided torpedoes where you can guide the torpedo from the submarine as long as the wire is still connected but once the wires cut the torpedo is on its own.

@giantnanomachine2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the missile and RWR. If the missile hasn't switched on its own radar, no way to tell. If the RWR doesn't know about the signature of the missile's radar, again no way to tell. Unless some super-modern sensor packages can deduce the type of missile from the IR signature or from the launch plume, which I imagine would both be tremendously difficult to do.

The airforce develop a standard procedure to combat each jet fighter from each nation using the available military intelligence. @kostaskoutsoulas46722 жыл бұрын
@@sety5591 yes, I get that pilots follow some kind of "standard defence procedure" depending on the enemy, but it's not "normal" or standard for a bandit to fire these missiles at you so if gs in this video was defending as he would normally defend a Russian aircraft, he would be pulverised very fast (i think). A couple of questions: 1) The flares you drop at 2:04 - any reason for that, or just to signal the AWACS that you're breaking off to hunt down the Flanker? 2) In a mission wherein you are trying to force an opponent to go defensive, so they have a harder time locking up the asset you're protecting, is there any worth to firing multiple Fox-3s before going defensive yourself? Giving them more to worry about, as it were?

Best tactical move is to get the F-15's way out in front of the AWACS, then use the AWACS superior track range to cue the 15 where to engage the SU30. The 15 needs to engage the 30 long before the 30 gets into firing range. Else the AWACS needs to close down its radar and dive for the deck, so as to get out of track range of the 77.

GS, can you please check the following case? Mig-31 flys at its maximum altitude about 90K feet and I suppose Aim-120 would not be able to hit it as some sources say the max altitude for Aim-120 is about 80K feet.
@agsystems82202 жыл бұрын
At that altitude a Mig-31 is barely staying in the sky and not doing any manoeuvring. A Mach 3 Mig will probably out-manoeuvre a Mach 3 Aim-120 at that altitude, but it will cost it a chunk of altitude and speed. An Aim 120 could easily get up there. The problem is that it has very little ability to turn when it gets there due to the thin air. It certainly could hit a Mig 31, but only if it made little attempt to avoid it. I wouldn't pay much attention to 'max altitude' figures though, as they are fairly arbitrary representation or diminishing effectiveness.
