The Substance is having a terrible day. Including snubs on the Shortlist, it also missed Casting Society (CSA) - which will be the new Oscar category starting with the 2026 ceremony.

Re: Will & Harper's biggest hurdle being the shortlist - plenty of celebrity docs have missed from this position. See also: Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, not to mention numerous music (bio)docs-- Billie Eilish, the Leonard Cohen film, The Velvet Underground, etc.-- just this decade.

Just to add: I do think its chances are boosted, as you say, in that it's not a real biodoc. I haven't ruled it out completely. But I do think it would be atypical compared to recent nominees and so I remain skeptical about its chances. There's a big jump required to go from Top 15 to Top 5.

Joker: Folie à Deux making it on the shortlist for Best Sound over The Substance is the greatest coup ďétat ever. Whoo!! 😂

Joker is sort of a musical, the substance is a horror film. They have a massive aversion to horror films unless it's like silence of the lambs. The substance might not happen after all. It's a gross body horror and it's very core, the academy hates it with a burning passion for those reasons alone.

​@@AntsTheaterCorner2698 Exactly! That's what I've been telling everyone. It was fine but it wasn't on the level of The Silence of the Lambs or Get Out. It's largely overrated and it's definitely the Saltburn of the year. I hope it gets snubbed just so everyone stops talking about it like it's better than any other horror movie when it's not.

@@AntsTheaterCorner2698 Yeah that had way more staying power and made a lot more at the box office than The Substance. It was also a truly original story whereas Coralie Fargeat basically stole themes from The Fly, The Nutty Professor, and The Picture of Dorian Gray.
