To explain the line Gonzo says of "A five year mission boldly going where no man has gone before" Is the opening line said in the original Star Trek series. Mrs. Bluveridge is Jennifer Saunders who you'll know as the voice of Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2. The guy who plays Billy Bones is proud to be the only person to die a Muppet Film. You heard Tim Curry sing as Dr. Frankenfurter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Yes, Pirates are still around. Somali Pirates were who attacked Captain Phillips and held him and his crew captive. The lead one is still in U.S. prison. The pirate who said "I couldve been a contender" is a reference to the Marlon Brando film "On the Waterfront" it is a line Brando says in the film. There is an end credit scene of Long John on the island dealing with bad sea jokes from a tiki head.

So as you probably figured, this movie is based on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island. Disney did the definitive Live Action version back in 1950, and they also did the animated adaptation Treasure Planet in 2002. Now since you didn't mention it, I'll assume you haven't read the novel, so I'll point out the call-backs and divergences. 3:14 - Yeah, this line is directly from the novel (though the sass is new). 4:04 - Although Jim Hawkins' father WAS a sailor who died at sea, Jim wasn't an orphan. The Admiral Benbow was owned and operated by Jim's mother, and Jim was the sole protagonist (until the other characters showed up later). And, of course, there was no Misses Bluverage. 4:47 - Alcohol induced hallucinations. Also known as Delirium Tremens. 7:12 - In the novel, after the attack on the Admiral Benbow, Jim and his mother fled and hid under a bridge until morning. They then sought out Dr. Livesly, an old family friend, and he's the one that put them in touch with Squire Trelawny, who authenticated the map with the same line Fozzie used here. (Squire Trelawny was a bit goofy in the novel, but he didn't think someone lived in his finger). 9:30 - Needless to say, Silver DID have a parrot in the novel named Captain Flint (not Polly) who would constantly repeat "Pieces of Eight, Pieces of Eight!" The book actually ends with Jim saying he sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night with the parrot's call echoing in is mind. 9:42 - This revelation happened pretty much just like this in the book. 10:41 - A+ reaction here. 10:49 - Smollet really did call Jim out when he arrived to tell him that he'd sailed with Jim's father. 12:11 - Two words: Rocky Horror. 13:04 - The "cutthroats, villains, and scoundrels" line as well as the "excellent advice of our cook" line are both directly from the novel. 13:27 - So is the bit with Long John and the alcohol (though not the joke stuff, of course). 15:31 - What Gonzo's describing here is what's known as 'Keelhauling,' literally hauling someone under the keel (bottom of the boat). It was a form of capital punishment aboard ships because between almost drowning and getting torn up by the beams and barnacles attached to the hull, chances are you'd be dead by the time you came out the other side. 18:22 - Check out a 2013 Tom Hanks film called Captain Phillips. Based on real events. 18:42 - Needless to say, Silver didn't just trick Mister Arrow into a longboat and leave him adrift in the book. He outright killed him. 19:26 - Another scene taken directly from the novel. This is from the chapter notoriously titled "What I Heard From The Apple Barrel." 20:09 - It's at this point in the film that things start deviating a bit from the original. Many of the key plot points are still present, though some things are cut or adapted for pacing. The most significant change is to the character of Ben Gunn. I'll leave it at that until we get there. 21:07 - Because it's Tim Curry. 21:22 - "I could have been a contender" is a famous line from the Marlon Brando movie 'On The Waterfront.' It's here as a reference because these pirates are talking about what they 'could have been.' 22:29 - I'll just point out that there were no natives in the book. 22:33 - The tree was there, though. 23:40 - So, yeah. 'Benjamina Gunn.' In the book, Ben Gunn was the cabin boy when Flint buried the treasure. He survived the voyage and when Flint died, he boarded a ship headed towards the region of the island and convinced the crew to go look for the treasure, but when they got to the island and Ben didn't know EXACTLY where it was, the ship's crew marooned him and sailed away. Ben spent the next few years searching for the treasure and, as the pirates discovered, unburied it and changed it's hiding place. The scene in the cave played out all but exactly like it did in the book. 25:42 - "SAYtan is HEAtin' his POkers for ya!" I love this part. This scene DOES take place in the book, but it's not quite so melodramatic. 26:11 - Needless to say, Mr. Arrow didn't come back to life in the book. The raft Jim used to sneak back aboard the Hispanola and free the crew was built by Ben Gunn so that he could use it to row out to any passing ship he could find and barter passage home. 28:48 - The line is a reference to the musical (and at the time somewhat recent movie adaptation) Evita, specifically to it's song 'Don't Cry For Me, Argentina.' 30:39 - Gonzo is trying to sound tough, but all he said was 'My home is your home." 31:15 - I was JUST as excited as you when Sweetums sided with the good guys. 32:24 - So this final confrontation between Jim and Silver actually happened, but Silver didn't escape until the ship made port, and he only escaped with a small bag of loot (more than enough for his lifetime, but still only a tiny fraction of the whole treasure).

The songs are great and Tim Curry is just perfect in this role! He just fits so well with the Muppets! Also we get Billy Connelly who proudly boasts to be one of the few if not only character to die in a Muppet movie And you have heard him sing before. When I met him I got to tell him how this was my favourite movie growing up, but I’m from a musical theatre family so when my parents deemed me old enough to watch the first little bit of Rocky horror picture show, you can imagine my horror when they told me this man dancing around in heels and women’s lingerie was my beloved Long John Silver 😅. He laughed at that!

"The Horrors" is a slang term for Delirium Tremens. It's a condition you see in long-term alcoholics that causes shakes, anxiety and hallucinations. Usually terrible and frightening ones. It's usually a sign that the person is terminal.

That is Billy Connelly. He started in stand-up. Warped intelligence and sexy. I will watch anything he's in because he takes things to new levels. ❤

4:32 The song in the tavern where Kevin Bishop (Jim Hawkins) sings "Something Better" is actually Kevin Bishop's final audition for the role. By the time they went to *actually* go film the scene (several months later) his voice was cracking and he couldn't hit the high notes. So they went back and used the footage from his audition instead.

If you truly want to learn about Gonzo’s origins you should watch Muppets From Space. It’s not one of my favorites but your questions will be answered. Treasure Island, Christmas Carol, and the og Muppet Movie are my faves…all for different reasons and I could never pick one over the other two. Love that you have enjoyed them too ❤

My favourite part of the movie is comedy legend Billy Connolly unable to control his laughter doing the "Jim Jimmy Jim Jim" gag - he was known for breaking down during comedy sketches well before this of course.

Apparently when you pull on Gonzos nose, he pulls a hilarious face, 😂 so it's probably hard to keep a straight face with that.

Gonzo is classified as a weirdo and there is a whole move dedicated to him called Muppets From Space.

This is probably my favorite Muppet movie. Treasure Island was one of my favorite books growing up, so I loved watching any movie about it. And I know you don’t normally do this, but I really think you should react to other movie adaptations of Treasure Island, specifically the ones from 1950, 1990, and Treasure Planet. They’re all the same story, but each one is a different experience that I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

The 1950 version of "Treasure Island" starring Robert Newton is the reason why most people think that all pirates speak in that particular manner.

I personally feel that that film undercuts Gonzo's uniqueness; I liked him much better as a "whatever." But I have a feeling that Ashleigh would probably appreciate having her questions answered.

Not including his songs in the *"Rocky Horror Picture Show",* (including the original stage show) as well as *"Ferngully"* and other films. As a singer, Tim Curry has released *three* rock-focused studio albums: *"Read My Lips"* (1978), *"Fearless"* (1979), and *"Simplicity"* (1981).
