I love flaxseed gel. I did a vey simple recipe by boiling the flax seed and adding EVOO and coconut oil. The next time I mix up mine I will add marshmallow root and slippery elm to use as a leave in gel. On a side note, really off topic here... Marshmallow root makes amazing tea especially if you have a sore throat, tonsilitis, bronchitis, or a cold. It works great because it gets rid of inflamation.

Alternatively, you can use infused water when you boil the flaxseeds. You do this by boiling the herbs in water first, strain, and then use that herb-infused water to boil the flaxseeds. That’s what I do with my camomile flaxseed gel.

Do not boil the herbs. Oy. 1. Place them in water. 2. Allow the water to get WARM. 3. Remove the pot from heat 4. Cover and let sit for 20. 5. Strain and transfer the water to the flax seed pot.

I actually made some of the flaxseed gel with additional henna, aloe powder, and fenugreek. It did not end up having a very good hold on my hair texture but BOY it is soo moisturizing and makes my hair feel super soft. I started adding it to my routine in replacement of my store bought leave in conditioner. Game changer.

I was thinking of adding marshmallow root to my gel too because I don't want crunchy curls & mostly just want something with lots of slip to help detangle & keep my hair detangled. Right now I don't have marshmallow root or slippery elm, so am thinking of using fenugreek seeds as a substitute since I have that on hand.

I never would have thought to use hibiscus and amla but that sounds wonderful to add! And using henna infused water i think is so clever and genius! My husband discovered the secret to straining it ( he also whips shea butter!): Cook flaxseeds (we also add hibiscus tea bags) to desired thickness. Don't let it cool. Once the thickness is to your liking, put a strainer over your storage container, pour in, and let it cool in whatever container you want to store it in. Works everytime!

RebeLSmith I've been using henna & indigo in a 2step process (a paste of 1part henna to 2parts indigo for the 1st step, then the 2nd step is just plain indigo & water paste applied directly after rinsing out the 1st step) to dye my hair from 70% grey to jet black for about a yr & a half now. At 1st I felt like it was a long strenuous process but loved the results so I kept doing it & 4months into my new routine I needed less henna indigo treatments since the color started to last longer! 😍 now with a few random touch ups here & there NO ONE believes I had ever been grey

Thank you for all your in-depth information and inspiration. I have been looking for a flax seed gel recipe for my daughter and I will be using this one. I'll let you know how it works out.

This was great thank you but I was wondering if you could use hibiscus and amla powder as well....

How did you strain it out? I've made flaxseed gel before and its a serious pain to strain it.
