I feel like you could skip the straining step by boiling the flax seeds inside a pouch, almost creating a teabag but out of flaxseeds. Just a thought that came to mind! On another note I can't believe it's been years since your original video, I remember watching it and making my own gel. I found it absolutely mind blowing that you could make gel out of two ingredients lol. I still have those flax seeds from years ago, I should probably toss them!

For those who do not use metric: *2 cups water and 1/4 cup whole flax seeds* will give you the results shown here. I follow a similar technique (medium-high "boil" for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally) however, I find it much easier (less messy, too) to strain the still piping hot gel through a METAL sieve into a large container. The hot gel is so liquid-y that it falls easily through the mesh, no squeezing required. Also, I find that it yields a lot more this way than if I let it cool down and use pantyhose or cheesecloth to squeeze the gel through. (Thanks for the recipe! It really is foolproof!)

I love the ratio of the seeds and water, it comes out perfectly every time! The only thing I hate is after I made a fresh batch, I would see mold starting to form on it by the time it’s time for me to retwist my locs. I’ve discovered a solution that will fix that problem and I’m not sure why I’d never thought about it before. Last time I made a batch, after it was cooled, I added a few drops(maybe 5 drops) of tea tree oil along with my jojoba oil in my concoction. I did this two retwists ago, that’s over two months ago and my gel still smells fresh like I just made it and no mold! The tea tree oil naturally kills fungus, so it’s hard for it to form. I just wanted to share that and help anyone else that has thrown away a batch due to mold. Also I keep it refrigerated. You’ll thank me later! 😊

- on medium high heat put 600ml of water in a pot - add 1/4 cup whole flaxseeds into pot - mix flaxseeds around so all of them are submerged in the water - bring pot to a boil - when it starts foaming up like crazy give it a good stir - turn off heat once you see the gel like consistency - let the gel sit in the pot for 30 minutes to 1 hour - boom, you just made flaxseed gel

Suggestion: To make for easy separation of gel and seeds, place seeds in a metal strainer that sits perfectly in the pot without being held. Pour hot water over the seeds into the pot until the seeds are submerged in the water. (pouring already hot water over the seeds allows the boiling time to speed up). Bring to a boil and look for the thick mucus to form. I usually separate them right away because then I don't have to smash the seeds into the strainer to separate the remainder of the gel from the seeds. but allowing them both to sit for a while is fine also. Pour the gel into the desired container and allow to cool down. Easy separation, less messy, no panty hoes needed, easy clean up.

Antoinette Johnson Yeah this is so much easier. I actually stopped making it because of the short shelf life. I'd always have a significant amount that would go to waste because I can't use it fast enough. I probably need to find a smaller strainer that could fit in a smaller pot so that I can make less.

Did you know that you can just pour it through a strainer hot and it will give the exact same results and takes a couple of seconds?? Just make sure your metal strainer has holes small enough not to let the seeds go through. I add rosemary and lavender for hair growth and a little bit of vitamin e to help preserve it. You can also add aloe vera to help preserve it. It's also VERY good for your skin (your whole body).

I normally put 1-2 drops of pure tea tree oil to about 24 to 32 flo Oz of the gel to preserve it. Stays weeks to 2 months when done and stored in the fridge. Also good for dandruff and itchy scalp. Don't use tea tea if you're allergic or sensitive to it.

I’ve been making this gel for 8 or 9 years. It can be used on any hair type. The consistency depends of the seed to water ratio and boiling time I add essential oils. I like mine somewhat watery. It works well over my leave in and only flakes if I am heavy handed. I use a metal strainer because I’m not about that pantyhose thing. The downside is you have to refrigerate it and you have to use it up pretty quickly because it will go bad after about two weeks. I make only enough for four uses. Another con is You can’t really travel with it. There are commercial gels by Aunt Jackie, Jason, and on Etsy made with flaxseed but of course they have other stuff to preserve. FSG is by far the CHEAPEST gel you can use. So when people try to say being natural is expensive I say that is not a given because it depends on how you choose to spend your money. Also you can NOT use ground flaxseeds to make this. If you put the boiled flaxseeds in a Tupperware container with a lid you can store it. Then you can boil them again later using half as much water as the first time and yield more gel. With a bag of flaxseeds being about $4 like I said super cheap.

I’ve cut out all inflammatory foods from my diet for the past 6 months and have still not seen any improvement. Just yesterday I finally attempted the flax seed gel.... I don’t know if it came out exactly as it should have but I couldn’t believe the amount of hold it gave me, without the hard, dry cast that I’ve become accustomed to with Ecostyler Gel. I’m going to commit to 1 month of using only flaxseed gel and I’ll update with my results. I’m hoping for an improvement! Fingers crossed!

I had to come back to this video, I love wash n go's, and slick syles! But store-bought gels have been making my hair fall out, so I was searching for homemade gels and I saw this one that I had forgotten about! But I know your recipes are always good, so I'm going to try this out. Thank you!💜

YES, YES, YES!!! Best ever gel. I have been making this gel from your first video. Made some on April 27th. My curls are holding for days ( week or more). Double strain twist /Bantu knot (leave for 2 days), loosen knots, leave hair tightly curled,. The curls will loosen and fall in place. I get lots of great comments.

Thank you for posting the update. I watched your first video in 2010 or 2011 when I started getting into the curly girl method. I stopped making the gel after a few years because it takes so long, but I ran into a line of hair products that wrecked my hair so I am trying to get back into natural/DIY products again. I love that I don't need to burn my hands to make flax seed gel anymore! Haha!

Facts! My hair started breaking like crazy after I stopped using it for a while, I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Once I start back using it, immediately my hair was more manageable, curls was popping. This gel is a "NEED" for my hair and not a choice. I bet I wont go without it for too long anymore.

Great! Comes out wonderful each time. My variation is to not use as many flaxseeds, nor boil it for too long. I get a thinner gel consistency that is pourable while still hot, through a strainer (no need for stockings to extract the gel) My hair is not very thick, so this consistency works for me, and quick too. .

I've used Ecostyler in the past but it flakes and doesn't mix with many of my products. :/ I don't like the fact that it contains a bunch of chemicals anyways, so this is the perfect chance for me to finally try out flaxseed gel. I've watched a couple of vids for DIY hair creams/stylers so I think I'm gonna mix the gel with my curl enhancing smoothie and some shea butter. Can't wait to take out these crochet locs next month and try it out!

Okay, this recipe truly *IS* perfect! I had to make 1/2 the suggested amount (1&1/4 C water & 1/8 C flaxseed) because it was way more than I could use the 1st time. Gel is perfect every time tho! I strain mine **immediately** from the heat through a mesh strainer instead of letting it thicken first.

Yay!!! Thanks for the video I can’t wait to try! I’ve been making flax gel for about 3 years with similar ratios. I normally don’t boil as long and strain right away with a metal strainer. I add honey and fresh aloe, with essential oils. But this consistency is a lot thicker and I’m very interested to see how it holds !!!! Been feeling like I need to tweak my recipe lately !

Thank you for this foolproof method! I have been sitting on my packet of flaxseed for so long!! Mine took a lil longer to make a mucus trail (probably because my seeds are old lol) but as soon as I took off the stove I poured the pot over into my Pyrex bowl that I had but a wig cap over and let it cool like that so I had minimal squeezing to do when it cooled...worked perfectly! I stirred in some drops of tea tree and JBCO before pouring into a jar and refrigerating. I tried it on a piece of hair and babyyyyyyy when I tell you DEFINITION!!

Kimetrica Carter it's a hard condtion to have, but it can be managed. I just used the aloe leaf without the oils because I'm weary of oils now. The flaking has reduced a bit but I still have to stay on my same wash routine. I also use sheamoistures african black soap shampoo and that helps alot. Also v05's kiwi line conditioner is a great prepoo as well and is only a dollar! Let me know if any of this info helps you all. :)
