I do it before each game. I get crazy anxiety that I lost a card or my count is wrong BUT I properly shuffle the whole deck 10-15 times with a mix of mash and riffle. I’ll also add it’s a good way to inspect sleeve condition

Slow playing is that serious, pile shuffling after game 1 or 2 should be DQ and life-time ban. You're allowed to do 1 pile shuffle before each game in magic but you can't rely on that to randomise, you have to also mash or riffle. There's much less time pressure to finish 3 games in a round in magic though, at least for most decks in most formats.

If you play decks like garde, where partially 9 10 energy stick together you just gotta pileshuffe. Or get 3 mulligans and cry over bricks, afterwards If you wanna get something to waste less time, lets introduce to look up your prize cards at the begin of the game.. Cycling trough your deck 25 times, and writing down each 6cards takes 5 minutes in every streamed game

In Japan, a pile shuffle is a basic etiquette before game in Pokémon TCG to present your kindness to your opponent, so in all matches in international, players will do a pile shuffle before gaming although it take a bit time

For international play, that does make sense. However, at non-international events there are time constraints based not on match-time but the event overall. Considering that this is one of many minor nuances that factor into long and intense event planning & scheduling (including technical difficulty, staffing variables, scoring for overall players, and the list goes on). Really do enjoy that you highlighted this act of sportsmanship since most new TCG players learn very differently from anywhere. 😄

Pile shuffling isn't outright banned in Magic, you're allowed to pile shuffle once per match for the specific purpose of counting your cards. But yeah, piling does not randomise properly, could realistically be used to stack but more importantly is a massive time waste.

Pile Shuffling is a great way of making sure cards dont stick together in the deck, which does happen when you factor in moisture in the air and sweaty hands. As long as you shuffle 7 times after the pile, I see no problem with this. Just call a judge if you think your opponent didnt shuffle enough.

Occasionally when I do pile I do half and half sometimes, just because I struggle quite a bit with riffling a full deck of 60. (at least putting them back together). but even then it's not my main method of randomising

​@@jammjar8838 feel ya, and even trough I can riffle, is not something I want to do always to not damage the cards, so I kinda made another way to riffle that is easier and also don't hurt your cards (still not sure if it would be allowed in tournaments) Basicly divide into 2 piles (and hold them) like normal riffle, but than you quickly slide your fingers to put cards in the middle just like how rifle makes a single pile, but manualy (left right left right) and once that is finished, take the top of the deck, shove into the middle, and than the bottom and put it into the middle aswell for more random, isnt fast as a riffle but hey its faster than doing a pile shuffle :P

Reading some of these comments is kinda cringe. The number of people who seem to (based on their comments) think that when the rules say the deck needs to be random it means evenly distributed but that's not how it works a random deck could have all 12 energy clumped together it's random that's the point. If you know the order of the deck before the piles you know it after that's not random that's just reordered so after you waste all that time you still need to do 7-8 mash/riffle shuffles to properly randomize the deck so all you achieve when pile shuffling is burning the round timer. Just quickly count your deck at the start of a round if you're worried you lost a card.

I don't like this video/rant, because it doesn't convey the message for people who don't understand why pile shuffling is bad. You can't get people to understand if you call them stupid. This will just offend them. First of all what I will not explain, why 7 mash or riffle shuffles are the proper way to randomise your deck. There are enough videos which explain this. I myself usually do 9 to 10 with a 60 card deck because my technique is sometimes a bit sloppy. I also dislike riffle shuffling especially my opponents card because it has a potential to damage the cards and there is a way with mashing which doesn't do that. So I will try to explain what Azul tried to say. This video contains 2 major points. 1) Pile shuffling and shuffling smaller piles is not a proper way to randomize your deck. 2) Because this process is very time consuming, but doesn't achieve anything for tournament game play it should be banned. So what do you achieve when you pile shuffle? The only reason you should ever consider pile shuffling is to count your deck. It is a way to make sure that you have the right amount without active counting. This is especially comfortable when you're nervous because it's your first big tournement etc. and you might make a mistake by counting yourself. But you have to be aware of is that pile shuffling is also a form of sorting your deck. Why is this a problem when you don't know the exact order of cards? The answer to this is probability. In my years as a TCG player I see a lot of people to have a problem to understand full randomness. The rules state that at the beginning of a game the deck has to be fully randomized but what does that mean? A fully randomized deck means that you can't locate a card's specific position and a cards relative position in the deck. I think the first part is clear and these are usually too obvious ways to cheat. The important part is the meaning of the second part and I think examples will show it the best way for people who are struggling to understand this concept. Another commenter wrote that they liked to pile shuffle after they had a long game with their Blacephalon deck. The reason of course is that their discard pile has clusters of fire energies and they might draw a dead hand with almost just energy cards. So when they pile shuffle these clusters will break up into the piles and that itself is cheating. The reason is they changed the probability in their favor to not draw a dead hand. They don't know how many fire energies they are drawing or which prize card is a fire energy but they know that they will mostlikely have 1 or more cards between their fire energy cards so they know the relative position of the fire energies to the other energies within the deck. And if they don't fully randomize the deck after this pile shuffle they gained an advantage against their opponent. And to be clear. Fully randomization doesn't mean that you dead draw all the time. It just means that you can't predict what you will draw. And always think about your opponent's perspective. They can't know for sure that you prepared your deck that after a pile shuffle it is in an order that you orchestrated yourself. That is why pile shuffling is always suspect in a tournament setting. So why is shuffling smaller piles into the big one a problem? The answer is that you can still manipulate the relative position. Of course if you do the following with intention, it is blatent cheating. But even if not you can gain yourself an unfair advantage against your opponent. In this example we look at the way Azul shuffled the piles into one. he took one pile at a time and shuffled it with the stack he had before and mashed/riffled for 1 or 2 times. So let's say there is a tech card for the matchup which would be devastating to be prized. If you use this method and you have this crucial card in your last pile that you are adding to the other stack on top of it and then you riffle 2 or maybe 3 times. it is very likely to be in the top half of your deck. Now you present the deck to your opponent and they cut the deck. Suddenly it is more likely that the card is on the bottom half of your deck and far away from the six slots that will be your prize cards. These cheats are hard to track and they are all enabled by pile shuffling plus insufficient randomization afterwards. Even if you have no intention of cheating the rules make it your responsibility to fully randomize your deck and your opponent has every right to enforce this to ensure that you play in a fair game. With 1) established I think 2) is quite obvious. When you pile shuffle you still need to fully randomize your deck so the pile shuffle is as stated above only a way for you to count your deck. But this is not your opponents problem. You both have a right to fully use the timer of the round to play the game. So if the round is about to start you shouldn't waste time with doing something that should've been done before going to the table. Does this mean you should never pile shuffle? No, but don't do it directly before or during a match. As I said it is a sure way to prevent miscounting, but do it in a way your opponent doesn't gets suspicious of you and you don't waste time with it. For example at the start of the tournement: Do a pile shuffle before round 1 and put your deck in your deckbox. Then you just need to make sure at the table that your deckbox is empty. After a match pile shuffle and put the deck in the deckbox and open it just at the table of the next round. Easy. Do I think Pile Shuffling should be banned? I agree with Azul. There is no reason to pile shuffle before or between games. The games where I understand that you want to count your Deck between games are games with more then one deck, with side boards and with effects or mechanics in the game where your cards can be on the opponent's field (YuGiOh is a prime example of this). Pokemon does not have any of this so it should not be necessary to count the deck between games.

I also do the 20-20-20 counting strategy before and after a match. It takes like 15 seconds, and gives you plenty of time to do the 7 mash/riffle shuffles afterwards.

Can I raise a point of accessibility and shuffle panic.There are people who have a history of struggling with manual dexterity or paranoia that shuffle panic is an actual thing. For instance mashing cause some players to drop the deck and there is plenty of chance to cheat in a "60" card pick-up,rifflers can become anxious over card damage and pokemon tcg is now serious money in some of those cards which further enhances paranoia and the same time players who really struggle can hurt their hands or even drop a card or fold it during the merge that comes after. Pile shuffling is okay to start but even I know it is not practical in play after the starting shuffle. If we are that concerned the only thing left is to take shuffling away from the player entirely like the do in casinos by have a dealer/judge in high competitions overseeing the table. So yeah I just want everyone to take a moment and think back to when they first started how often they would drop cards how long they may have spent trying to shuffle the right way and then find that they never fully stop struggling jsu take a moment to think about the Accessibility aspect that's all. For everyone talking about "de-clumping" or "spreading cards out", be careful, as this can also be seen as a form of cheating and get you in trouble. Random doesn't mean evenly distributed, it means your three copies of Mew VMAX being cards 1, 21, and 41 in your shuffled deck is just as likely as them being cards 1, 2, and 3. I know there can be practical limitations to people shuffling by hand, but if you shuffle sufficiently, it doesn't matter whether you de-clumped or not, because the shuffling has made your deck random regardless of its initial state.

A simple look at the binomial distribution disproves Azul's entire gripe by virtue of how the sum of all individual piles inherently at the end will produce a different permutation. The order doesn't really matter so long as a similar transform is applied to the entire stack, i.e. is a Linear Transformation. If your concern is about hand fixing or rigging a shuffle to always produce the same hand, then what they're doing is stack manipulation by using the exact same pattern all the time. You can fuck someone else's rigging by cutting their deck randomly everytime. By always switching your cutting strategy (halving, dividing into multiple stacks, shuffling, rivers,none at all, etc...) You effectively make it into a mind game between you and the cheater trying to figure out for what shuffle you're going for. That's to say, you can always influence the cheater's hand when they are dependent on your input. If they shuffle again after you cut, just call a judge on them and make them aware that you're not afraid to waste both your time and also have a judge threaten a DQ for the behaviour.

I usually do 5 stacks of 12 since after a game the deck is pretty clumped after a game but then I pick the whole deck up to do a regular shuffle. As long as people know a pile shuffle is not a randomization I’m happy. It makes me unreasonably mad when people think it’s randomization, but even more so when people think it’s a way of “mana weaving”. It’s literally just a waste of time to count your cards, no more, no less.

I never do the shuffle two of the piles thing. That’s crazy lol But I do a 6 pile shuffle either at the beginning of my next match or after the match I just played. I’m not great at shuffling normally and cards don’t get fully mixed in for me unless I do that. Like after playing a game with Mew VMAX, most of my Mew and Genesect are together and I pile shuffle to try and mix them up the best. Not in between games during a match.

The way to pile shuffle is odd number piles, if your deck is even numbered, and then riffle 3 to 7 times. This gets clumped cards apart then sufficiently randomized. It's more important in a game like Magic to unclump cards that tend to be played in piles on the battlefield, read lands.

In my TCG experience, I can confidently say I have never seen anyone pile shuffle and take not the whole stack and shuffle them again🤣 Riffle shuffling makes me cringe whenever I see someone doing it… I feel like you’re just constantly bending the cards 😰

Preach to em brother. I will do piles of 10 when counting but I agree you should make a complete pile at a time, people pile shuffling to randomise are the same who think weaving is ok i.e. cheaters. If opponent does it at a significant event I'll give their deck 4 or 5 mashes instead of just cutting it.

Various shuffling methods are valid, but using pile shuffling ALONE is not truly randomizing your deck, and can allow for players to stack cards if their sleeves are stealthily marked. Pile shuffle into waterfall or riffle shuffle is fine, though, as long as they do it a good handful of times. Personally, when I play, between games I reset my deck to "state 0"; an organized deck. When sitting down to play, I'll waterfall 24 times (12 is the base recommendation for "properly" randomizing a deck.) I personally have no issues with pile shuffling being used, but if they don't use another randomization method, then I won't accept the deck for a cut. I've had to deal with this when I used to play Yugioh like ten plus years ago. I know various people at my locals still tried to cheat me. Some were even braven enough to do it in front of my face.

You missed the biggest reason why it should be banned. You can organize your deck, show up to your table and start pile "shuffling" in a specific way to make the cards ordered in any way you'd like. And your opponent thinks you shuffled because they just watched you pile "shuffle" so they might not even shuffle your deck. They can cut it, but you can still know exactly where every card is in your deck based on your opening hand.

Thing is, "pile shuffling" is NOT A SHUFFLE. You use it to count the cards and that's it, because it's strictly inefficient in terms of shuffling compared to simple mashes/riffles, statistically speaking. This thing of shuffling one pile and the other pile and then the other is exactly like you said, those are not shuffles because the entire deck should be included. I wouldn't mind this being banned, with the exception of doing one single pile-counting. Waste of time.

It makes sense in mtg if you're playing a second game, I've noticed often a regular shuffle is never perfect, and a lot of times people get mana flooded. A pile shuffle allows you diverse your mana and cards you previously had together

Maybe I'm too efficient or a bigger waste of time because I pile shuffle, and I always grab the two stacks furthest away from each other and mash them together. I do 8 piles, I grab top left and bottom right and mash once and continue on to the others. Then I proceed to mash or riffle a bunch before passing it on to be cut. Piles 1,3,5 are stacked and piles 2,4,6 make two halves and I just shuffle regular after that. Obviously shuffling out 6 piles then picking up the piles in sequence isn't shuffling.

I pile shuffle with not dragon shield. Some less quality sleeves stick together, not in the “o my two energies are together, make sure they are apart” in the literally one card is stuck with another. That’s because I sweat a lot with my hands. Then I do the crappy two pile shuffle because I got monkey brain. And sure I use the time to check the amount of cards. Then I ruffle shuffle 7 times. I hate my hands. Due to this Same sweeting I’ll easily go through like 500 sleeves in a regional

I plie "shuffle" in MTG during the start of game 1 in a match just to make sure I'm not leaving a sideboard card in that could get me a GRV, and when I do it, all of my cards get mushed together at the end before I actually start shuffling. I also tend to pile "shuffle" pretty fast because I drop cards from the top and bottom of the deck from both hands instead of one by one like most people do. Never do this in ptcg though, seems genuinely pointless in ptcg. Like you're supposed to do this as a means to count your cards quickly. I don't see why you would ever need to do that in a game with no sideboards. ESPECIALLY with how long ptcg games are. Like dude, our game 1 is going to take 40 minutes. You can't spend 15 minutes of it counting your cards.

I hate people that sort their decks this way between rounds justifying their "randomising" like this to help get better hands... Sometimes you randomly hit a pocket of the energy if it's truly randomised. Bad hands happen at random. If you're actively seeking to "declump" then you aren't randomising, you're stacking.

Only time I pile shuffle is when I first put a deck together so that I can split the cards up. But I don't shuffle each pile. I do two rows of four, then I pick up top bottom, repeat. Then mash shuffle them all 7-8 times.

What I like to do if my deck is organized(like in order of cards just to look at my deck list), I put them in 4-6 piles, then riffle the remaining pieces randomly(like pile A-C, pile E-B, pile D-F), then riffle them together and start mashing/riffle shuffling until I feel it’s randomized, then cut. I do both because the last time I tried just riffling/mashing was a YGO game where I swear I shuffle like 15 times and still ended up with 3 allure of darkness and 2 ash blossom 💀.

When I used to play MtG (like 10 years ago) pile shuffling wasn't banned, but everyone did it the same way. You make 7 piles, count your deck as you go, then pick up all 7 and mash or riffle the normal number of times. I don't know how true this is, but I remember being told that pile shuffling was beneficial in MtG specifically because 1/3rd of your deck is lands, so clumping happened way more often...but as you said, if pile shuffling stops clumps, the deck isn't truly random, so I see why they banned it

I typically drop my cards on the floor then pick them up one at a time to count. Not only do all the cards interact but i roll a marble on top of them to decide what i pick up next. Truly random and only takes around 10 to 20 minutes (depending if i lose the marble). The worst part is if i notice a sleeve gets dirty then i have to switch out sleeves and do the process all over again.
