Starting Blood Angels in 2024 (using Death Company Box)

I've had so many requests on how you could build the Death Company Black Rage for Blood Angels into a competitive army. So I've built 2 Blood Angels lists and explained the two distinct styles of playing Blood Angels in 10th Edition of Warhammer 40,000.

The new BAs combat patrol, basically the cost of the Captain and San Guard are covered by the cost of the Combat Patrol (£100 in UK), so buying those units separately would cost you about £100 (presuming San Guard are priced similarly to Bladeguard). It means the AIs and upgrade sprues are basically free, so if you sell off the AIs you'll save money over buying the Captain and San Guard units separately and have some BA upgrade sprues.

Just a note to anyone buying Gladiator Lancers, the Gladiator tank kit can make all Gladiator variants and you can not glue the turret together which will allow you to field any gladiator tank option. Also if you don't glue the back bit on where the turret sits, you can basically remove this and you have an Impulsor, so that gets you greater value out of one kit.

This is precisely what I needed! I'm a long-time Astra Militarum player (> 5000pts painted), and I have decided to start an army that plays differently. Blood Angels seemed to be a good choice. The box just arrived :-) Now, I need to work on it and plan my next acquisitions.

Got the new Death Company box, the spearhead strike force box, and plan on picking up the new combat patrol box. Then adding a Chaplain, a Chaplain on bike, a Gladiator lancer, Mephiston, And an impulsor. Over 2000 points with Plenty of build options.

Thanks for the vid. I will build my stuff the same,except I will put firstborn dc jumppacks on the 5 man dc squad. I will also print dc shoulder pads for the right shoulder since we didn't get the red cross as a transfer

I have to say, I have been waiting weeks for this video. Since hearing of the Blood Angels release and getting my hands on the FOMO box, I have theory crafted a number of 2000 point lists and have had such choice paralysis. This box and the vanguard spearhead box are a good combo for blood angels and you get a pretty large amount of jump marines for your money in addition to some light vehicles and a dread.

Good lists, but it seemed a little odd you had people adding more JPI yet Lemartes remained on the shelf for both. Especially since the melee list had 8 scoring units. Surely converting 5 of those JPI to DCwJP adding in Lemartes and maybe leaving the DC on foot at home would have been stronger. Same with the combined force really…. I’d be wanting to play both my cool new characters if I was just starting out with the box

I have friends who play 40k, and until this month I have never looked into the hobby. I have always been fascinated by it, but always from afar. I've done a massive deep dive on the lore since Space Marine 2 dropped and although I have looked at all the Space Marine chapters, I always come back to the Blood Angels. This video has made the choice for me to start building my army of Blood Angels and diving headlong into this awesome hobby!! Thank you!

I think I'm just gonna replace my old Assault Intercessors with the new ones. They were some of the first minis I painted when I came back to the hobby, so I improved strongly at painting since then. Maybe this is a nice opportunity to boost the look of my army.

I did pick up the fomo box, and im considering a list with all the contents of it alongside 6bgv, one or two baal predators, my astraeus and some sticky units like company heroes. Have yet to sit down and actually put it together, but i think it could work. I dont intend to play competitive, just for fun.

Because I am a Sang Guard WITH Wing supporter I am going to 3D print winged JumpPacks For my Sang Guard Then taking their “Fancy” JumpPacks and kitbash with Assault intercessors and make Vanguard Vets

You could not have made the squad more challenging to build lmao , I’d do 3 plasma 3 power fist 2 evisoraitor 5 bolt pistol 5 chain sword I get not wanting to loose your power fists on the plasma guys but I never overcharge on the jump squad Only makes sense to put Plasma with chain sword guys on the on foot squad 😊

I'll be buying some jump packs for the foot DC in the box. Still good to make them as assault intercessors if you need them. DC dread really needs to be around 160-170

I'll build more jump intercessors. Hopefully I can get my hands in Crimson lords DC JUMP Packs. Then I can use the normal ones to convert the intercessors on foot

this is very helpful! thanks a lot! back when i played orks I was always annoyed when a new overpowered codex came out because everybody and their mother started playing orks. I'm glad i don't feel that way anymore. but do you think that there are tons of more BA players righht now? do you think BA are too strong atm?

I think we are a little weaker with the new codex and we need some points balance, but the army is overall decent.

1:52 Here you mention that you would build 5x Assault Intercessors and 5x DC, but that you could also build 10x Assault Interc. It’s quite often we see competitive blood angels lists with 2 x 5 assault intercessors. Inside impulsors joined by a captain things very strong. As a brand new player this would be a solid start. I have not seen any competitive lists yet using the 5 man DC on foot, but it’s still early and points aren’t finalised yet so your question is hard to answer either 100% accuracy.

I would build impulsor with the shield, I would build infiltrators, for the grass I really think the choice is up to you. Flamers might be slightly better right now.

I got that box so very interesting topic, thanks. Two questions : I have a box of ancient Sanguinary Guards; will these ancient models still be playable in competitive play (i.e. base size) ? And second : I had already purchased Mephiston and I read he is a good character; is he usable in the competitive approach ?

Old SG will need to be on 40mm bases now. And yes Mephiston is decent. A lot of people really like him. Well need to see how many points he eventually is if he’s to be competitive.

They usually do generic space boxes, not a specific chapter.

I'd think it unlikely, just because they've just had the fomo box. But depending what the generic marine one is (or if they do another chapter one that's assault themed - Raven Guard or White Scars) maybe it could still be useful

At Very high-level professional players do use him, in fact they think he is crazy strong. Probably fits more into the all melee type of build, which is why I don’t use him. But I think he’s totally legitimate-tournament competitive unit.

You should take all special options so one guy gets a plasma pistol and the srgt gets a power fist and plasma pistol

I like them with a combat knife with the extra attacks in melee, but some people like the launcher and a sniper rifle.

Yeah that would be the most competitive currently, but stuff does change from time to time.
