That white plastic whatever-it-is behind the chicken roost is genius! Nothing sucks more than not being able to dig the chicken mess out because it's in the nooks and crannies of a stud bay.

Thanks Pete! Love your setup. Looks like it's going to work great. Mine is very similar. I added a watering system with a 25gal. barrel, pvc, and watering cups. It works great for my 26 hens, and only have to fill every couple of weeks. God bless TEXAS and long live the Republic.

Fantastic set up for your flock! You could easily put a droppings board under your roost .. using plywood covered in linoleum, or no linoleum, then sprinkle Coop Fresh PDZ on top to absorb odor and moisture.. I clean my droppings board daily, with wide Sheetrock blade knife and dump the droppings into a covered small metal trash can, then when full add to your compost… PDZ is great in the compost

Pete, thanks. Boy do they enjoy that clover. Seems like yesterday when you installed the big coop. I remain grateful for the gagootza / cucuzzi seeds you generously sent me last year. Yesterday, for my Easter gift, 2 of the 3 seeds broke surface in my small pots. I started them on 3/24; I soaked them overnight in water, then placed the seeds in a moistened paper towel and placed it that inside a plastic container. All 3 seeds germinated on 3/29. Thank you and be safe.
@petebeasttexashomesteading3 жыл бұрын
Awesome 👍 glade they germinated. Now this summer just let the biggest one go for seed and let it dry up and you'll have hundreds of seeds.

I don’t know if you planned this already, but consider putting a plywood underneath the roosts so it’s easy to clean up poop after they sleep. Just scrape it into a bucket or use old feed bags as a liner and you can fold them and stick it straight into the trash. It’ll cut down the mess in the bedding by a lot. ( just noticed this video is two years old. LOL)

Just found your channel and I have to tell you I really like your coop and set up you have. I have been raising chickens for about 11 years and my coop is a 4x8 playhouse my kids didn't use anymore so I put my imagination to it and framed an outside access four hole nest box and a chicken door I can open from the walk thru door. I have been really wanting to up size and get more birds and a shed style coop like your is exactly what I have been envisioning. Awesome job.

Hi Pete, we are new at raising chickens and are getting ready to get chicks for the first time and our coup situated. We currently have an ultra fine sand from previous owners at the bottom of our half barn that we are turning into the coup. I’ve thought about just putting leaves from our deciduous trees on the floor of coup. Would you say that’s ok or stick with shavings? You have a lot of great content on your channel, thank you for your time. I especially liked how you said that giving chicks greens is important from another video. I’m growing sunflowers, peas and clovers already just for them. 🤠🐓
@petebeasttexashomesteading Жыл бұрын
Looks like you'll have happy chickens with all the food your growing them. Leaves are great for chicken coop floors and I use them in the chicken run too. The leaves break down fairly quick so I also use wood chips in the chicken run.

I’m restoring a barn (small) built in 1909. The boards have shrunk some and big gaps in some areas. I want to use it because I’m a vintage nut any suggestions on how to plug the gaps? There are 20 hens in there now including two roosters and they are out all day.
@petebeasttexashomesteading3 жыл бұрын
The only way to fill in those gaps would be with a board but that will take away from the original look.

A 10'x24' run is good size for 10 birds or less. Chickens are not really into toys, but rather would like to peck and scratch for bugs and seeds on the ground.
