Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Gorilla Details:
Mokolo - born at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, he came to Cleveland in 1994. At that time, he joined three younger gorillas to make up Cleveland's Bachelor Group. Eventually, we were left with only 2 gorillas, Mokolo & Bebac, then Bebac died in 2017 (from heart disease-not mentioned in the video). Mokolo is now 36 years old. He is the dad of Kayembe and Kunda. Females were brought to Cleveland starting in the Spring of 2017
Fredrika (Freddie)- At 49 years old, she is the oldest adult female in the troop. She is Kayembe's surrogate mom She has raised four babies of her own. She came to Cleveland from Zoo Miami in April of 2017.
Kebi - (Kebi Moyo) she came from The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in May of 2017. She had her first baby at the age of 8. Kebi's first baby is named Kambera Dupe and she is currently at Zoo Atlanta. Kebi is now 32 years old.
Nneka - born in San Francisco. She came to Cleveland in April 2018. She gave birth to Cleveland's FIRST baby gorilla in 2021 (a male named Kayembe). She is 25 years old. Nneka's first baby was raised by its grandmother because Nneka did not show any proper maternal care then (San Francisco Zoo). Today, Fredrika is raising Nneka’s second baby, Kayembe. Again Nneka, did not show proper maternal care for this baby either.
Tusa - she is the smallest and lowest ranking adult in the troop. She arrived in Cleveland in May of 2019 from the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo in New Mexico. Tusa is 32, but has her 33rd birthday on December 2nd. Tusa was hand reared by humans, and she can get very vocal when upset.
Kayembe - has the honor of being the first baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Zoo. He was born October 26, 2021, and is two years old now. Like most toddlers, he is very active. He plays most often with Fredrika and Nneka. His birth mom is Nneka, dad is Mokolo.
Kunda - is the second baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. She was born July 19th 2023. Her mom is Kebi and her dad is Mokolo.
Jameela - born via c-section to Sekani in Fort Worth Texas zoo. Sekani is 33 years old and Jameela was her 4th baby. Sekani did not accept Jameela after recovering from her c-section. A search for a foster mom led her to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

Larry, I like what you do and I know you love these animals and I do too. But these gorillas are so much like us. It’s heartbreaking to see them in these cages and that’s exactly what they are. Can you imagine if we lived in those pens? The Gorillas should be taken somewhere else. For safety reasons, but I hate zoos because they never have enough room for the animals. You can see and watch the sadness in their eyes.

Thanks for watching. That’s one perspective - that others share with you. I too, wish we had vast areas for them to live in safely. However, until we have those places (like Cleveland’s future exhibit called Primate Forest) we do the best we can to protect them, educate the public about their plight , and take conservation steps to protect this critically endangered species. Zoos play an important role in making that happen. Thanks for your thoughtful comments. 👍😁. I don’t expect one reply by me to change your mind overnight. In the time I have been following Cleveland’s gorillas (2years- visits 2x per week) I’ve thought a great deal about wild animals and their future. I’ve also learned how our zoo has very dedicated and conscientious professionals who also want the best they can provide for these animals.

I just 🫶 how Freedie handled Kayembe when he went up & disturbed her & Jameela while they were knapping. Freedie just gave Kayembe kisses & gave him her full attention face to face ALWAYS INSURING THAT HE FEELS 💜'd even though she has Jameela now. Her behaviors in handling Kayembe WILL INSURE that Kayembe & Jameela grow up 💜'ing each other as siblings & that the "Troop", as a whole, are a "tight-knit family unit"! Way to go Mommy Freedie!!! But let's not forget Mikolo's role too cuz he's been a great "adoptive" Daddy to Jameela as well!!!

The head curator and the gorilla SSP representative have talked about Freddy always beginning a alpha female and that she so intelligent and now with wisdom plus she’s one of the savvy’s social gorilla’s they ever worked with. I think she’s been a great teacher to Kebi and Kebi is smart to watch and learn from Freddy as well. This is one of the calmest and best troop’s, I’ve heard many other keepers from other zoo say so as well.

Freddie is a rockstar. Supermom to Kayembe and now Jameela. You can truly see how much progress Jameela is making. She is protected but still allowed to move and get stronger. Love this troop and it is amazing that the baby was accepted by the entire group.

I see Freddie doing her best to manage them both, but I know it's got to be irritating to her to help the new little one while trying to balance her own needs for sustenance/rest and staving off Kayembe's toddler antics. So, I do hope the staff keeps working with Nneka and Kayembe on a more consistent basis in a way to take some of the load off Freddie whenever possible. Bless her heart.

Beautiful to see she was accepted by another troop! Poor Kayembe, gorillas usually have 4 years of attention from their mothers before a new baby requires their undivided attention. I’ve not been following this troop but he doesn’t seem to aggravate or play with his dad much like some others do.

Hi, thanks for the updats on Jameela’s journey . I’m ecstatic that she seems settled with aa good family. However, it is Freddie who has risen to super star status. i’m fascinated . She is a surrogate to Kamembe and Jameela. How is it she was able to breast feed Kamembe and now Jameela at 50.. Nah, there is much more. But if gorillas don’t walk through it all, I don’t show rooms with no gorillas. In my newer videos I often show all 3 indoor exhibit rooms. I realized I was giving a wrong impression by not letting viewers know about other space.

I think this enclosure is far too small for adult gorillas sorry not saying they get treated badly but it's definitely the smallest I've seen but hopefully one day they could make it bigger 💯

Jameela is a lucky little gorilla Freddie is a great Mom to Kayembe and now her. Freddie has patience and experience Nneka has been a bit impatient with Kayembe lately he’s fortunate to now have Jameela and little Kunda, Kebi is also a great mom. Larry does daily or semi daily explain the actual foster mother (Freddy) or Kebi as Kunda’s mother and explain Nneka was Kayenbe’s birth mother but showed no desire to raise him and is really just a best playmate since they are close in age. Some zoo have loud speaker’s where they go over frequently asked questions. Since Cleveland MetroParks Zoo is expanding so in the future this would be a great addition to the growth of the facility. What’s your opinion on this matter.

Many, but not all of my videos on this troop, explain that Nneka did not show proper maternal care for Kayembe. That Fredrika(Freddie) picked up Kayembe on day one and has cared for him ever since. Nneka did become a favorite playmate for Kayembe but that was when he was almost a year old. When you check out some of Kayembe’s videos -earlier on- I address his relationship- or lack thereof - with Nneka. (Sometimes just in the description below video). I will create a new video that mentions more - especially for my newer subscribers.

Usual? I’d say no. The two other females at Fort Worth did not want to do it. In Cleveland, they were slow and methodical in how they introduced Jameela to our troop and Freddie. Fortunately it worked out well.

She seemed anxious... but then, Kayembe is on the loose, and she can't really nap with the baby like she needs to. Hopefully they will install cameras soon so that they can close the building anytime they need to, but guests can still watch them from a non-intrusive distance. And hopefully, they'll continue separation training so that they can keep working with Nneka to pick up slack with Kayembe. He's trying... BUT, he's still a baby.

First and foremost, thank you Larry, great videos capturing indoor, outdoor and the 🦍 family. Secondly, we wonder if Freddie is producing enough 🥛? It seems as of Jameela is hungry. We know the zoo was giving Jameela supplemental, but just wondering... Also, the outside fence is short. Could the 🦍's escape if they wanted?

Thank you! Freddie is producing and has been for Kayembe for a while. The zoo does supplement both gorillas. The outdoor enclosure has a top net to it.

I am zero expert in gorilla behaviour but it seems to me there should be kind of a daycare for young gorillas, I believe it would relieve stress a lot for mothers having no peace it seems with youngsters running around and being so mischievous like Kayembe, he sure looks bored.

Her last child was born in 2002. She is the surrogate mom of Kayembe. His mom did not show any maternal care for him. She walked over and picked him up/ been his mom ever since

Its such a small area. Do the Gorillas here all the noise or is their area sound proof. Its sad to see a family in captivity, but I guess they're safer than in the wild

The gorillas hear some of the noise. When it’s gets loud the gorillas move to the back of the enclosure or to locations out of view. Yes, there are spots where gorillas can be out of view totally.

I am curious about something. When did Freddie actually give birth to a baby? If I’m understanding this right she adopted kayembe when his mother regected him. He seems to be weaned now. Then she adopts new baby Jameel’s and this baby is also doing very well. My question is how long has Freddie been lactating?! If she’s already weaned kayemeb she should’ve stopped making milk soon after!

Freddy's surviving children are all adults now. They would have all been adults. The zoo called it spontaneous lactation--- I don't know the science, but her body did it in response to the presence of the baby... now babies. Considering her age, it is your basic biological miracle.

Fredricka is a miracle! She started lactating out of the blue when she took on Kayembe, many years after the last of her own seven babies. She’ll turn 50 this year. Go figure how this could possibly happen! 🥰❤❤❤

When you see them twice a week and have helpful volunteers to guide you , you get to learn who is who. They don’t always do that in the same place. FYI there habitat is cleaned daily

To me the gorilla's of these American zoo are looking apathetic. In other zoo's they more enjoy the family life. Per example the environment of the Gorilla's in the London Zoo, the Taipei Zoo and the Japanese zoo look more dry and cosy for the gorilla's and the gorilla's are provided with BLANKETS because in captivity gorilla's 🦍 know how to use blankets. The gorilla's 🦍 of London, Taipei and Japan also looks MORE ENERGETIC, HAPPY AND ENJOYING FAMILY LIVE TOGETHER. Looking at the gorilla's, in other zoo's ,the youngest one acts like playing children. I hope that this American zoo will look at the family life of gorilla's, per example in the Chinese zoo, how they are doing it, because i always look with much pleasure to the gorilla's 🦍🦍 in the zoos that i have mentioned🙏

👍😁. I think now that cleveland has some gorilla children we will see more changes that lend to young gorillas having fun. Up till now we’ve just had adults. Case in point- just since Jameela has arrived there are several balls in with gorillas, a toy football, and a plastic ring Kayembe can sit in or play with. Hope it's ok for me to add this... After Kayembe's birth when Nneke didn't display maternal instincts - after which he also got very ill with pneumonia and was away from them for a while - something else amazing happened... Not only did Freddie begin to spontaneously lactate when she adopted Kayembe, but, after Nneke's milk had dried up, she did the same thing and began to nurse him along with Freddie. He was still getting bottles, but nursing from 2 different females. The axiom, 'It takes a village' was quite literal here. 😊

Well, if a human gave up a baby for adoption at birth, I don’t know how that mom would know/or how the child would know. Nneka did become the “go to”playmate for Kayembe.

It is very small. I've seen it in person. They are building a new ape habitat, though. I believe it will be completed by the time Jameela is Kayembe's age. The problem is that it will be a simulated outdoor experience. I hope there will be some true outdoor areas for the gorillas to visit.

Freddie has had a hysterectomy, so she couldn’t possibly become pregnant. It is amazing that she began to lactate at her late age.
