Honestly that would more reinforce the bent position of the feet if it tries to keep its toes closed I understand you're thinking about it would improve dexterity which means it's ability to actually move the toes but that would not help it increase its ability to move the toes to a straight position only towards a curved position

Birds have this talon design where the talon opens only if the bird uses its muscle to open it. Else the birds weight keeps the talons grasp and lock on to the branch/twig they are sitting on. That is the reason you do not see birds falling off tree even in strongest of storms. May be adding resting place like a branch would help the bird grow as close to nature.

Peacocks need much larger space with natural branches. In the natural environment the females roost on higher areas/ trees , males favor ground level. And they like to forage for food in large open areas. Males need space to spread their tail feathers.

@White House on the Hill Awhile ago (about 2 years ago) I sent you a plan on FB for a quail hutch for fun...this build gave me memories of those again. That mesh is what we used for those too. My suggestion for mods and paint would be to add some simple wooden trim to the edges and corners...than paint the trim and face whichever colors look nice for your surroundings to match it up. A nice project would be to make some grass and flower painting stencils to use on your bird boxes, tractors and hives...so you can paint some home and garden style murals on them. Lots of different things to do for little mods :) It is all based on preference. I like using the suspended feeders better than the ground ones but it really depend on the build. The ground one in this case is easier to work with. I like fancy builds with the sliding panel that opens up for access to the suspended feeding trough feeder. Bird seed hangers are fun for DIY projects and are great activities for birds that are cooped up. Back in the day I used them a lot with indoor birds of all types. Active happy birds yield better results. :)

Love the new house. So cute and glad that they're getting used to it. I was wondering if slanting the roof towards the front wouldn't be best, to keep the water off the building wall behind it. I could do some kind of gutter of sorts to run the water to the side of the shelter, but it’s under/next to the garage so it’s partially covered from the roof above so I don’t think it will get a big pile of rain water collection underneath.

They need to roost and fly up on it and big enough around for them to use their feet, sit and roost walk balance to support all their weigh. Plus have food and water away from under where they poop. Change out branches to fresh ones every 2 weeks. I use thick old branches for my dead tree limbs. Remember far enough from back area so they can set comfortable on the branches and have tail and body room. I have 30 peacocks now. They free range. Good luck

I know nothing about birds eyesight but maybe they couldn't see the mesh and thought it was a massive drop. Maybe if you put birds in there again you could initially put something under the mesh so they didnt feel there was a huge drop and then lower whatever that thing is every day before you eventually take it away? It could be completely pointless though because maybe they just didn't like they way the mesh felt on theor feet. I imagined like a mario scene on the back wall up to the jumps lol i think painting coops makes them look alot better and it also makes them last longer. It is also easier to clean poop off of sealed wood.
