In fairness, I'd imagine gloves thick enough to actually do anything would reduce dexterity of the hands and wrists, which would make it harder do the job. that being said, being this careless could've been catastrophic if it were something more dangerous. but I guess he only got bit after he'd already identified the snake, so! maybe he would've gone to grab equipment if he saw it was something more dangerous
