Gracias

What an amazing artist! So many of his sentiments -- the silence, the delicacy, the selflessness -- about the Goldberg and especially about the harpsichord I feel apply also to the clavichord and to Bach's music in general. Even a listener you can sense something transcendent at play 👏

I would love to see how Jean Rondeau has marked his score. Looking at how musicians annotate their personal scores is revealing, even more so if you could follow along as the piece is being played.

Very interesting. For him, it’s best to be silent about music. For Glenn Gould, one of the two musicians whom I feel understood Bach’s language as few others have-the other being Marie-Claire Alain-it was easy to try to find Bach’s meaning in words. Yet, despite all of his conversation, Gould didn’t just ‘play’ the “Goldberg Variations”....he sank his being into each piece, with his grandest expression being, “The Art of Fugue.” Each artist must find his/her own way to best express what they know and feel about the music they play!

I think he may mean more about talking about music in regards to technical aspects and the like, but that talking about how the music makes him feel and what he believes about it is fine. So it is a lot less about analyzing the music, and more about playing it, and discussing how it makes one feel.
