My favourite exercise for the lat is a one hand cable pulldown at 90º. That way you move the weight at the same angle the fibers face

***** Well, you don't really need weight to bust through a plateau. The weight is just an object to create tension on the desired muscle. Using lighter weight but with more time under tension is a lot more effective than using heavy weight with less time under tension, and it created better movement patterns. If you use 150lb dumbbells and throw the weight about, it's difficult to build a slow, true movement pattern, and you have no potential to progress from there. However, if you use 50lb dumbbells to create the same tension, then you have a potential to use weights from 50-150lb. The weight is unnecessary. The tension is the desired effect.

Hi Ben. I always find bent over rows to feel not as effective for me as meadows or his version of the barbell row in one arm. I get the idea that I need to limit bicep function and pull towards my back leg and down so that I get max engagement, but it still never feels as good as the rope stretch pullovers, pulldowns etc. the back is a tough muscle to feel I’ve found in general. I do find a chest supported t bar row feels good too. I do realize even though you aren’t always feeling a big stretch that they could still be working, but I just find some movements feel more than others.

This workout video stands out among the rest; it goes into detail about how you should be squeezing your back which a lot of people don't do (I've seen so many people use momentum or rely too much on bicep/forearm strength). Well done.

Ben really find your methodology the best. Somewhere I saw you referencing the rep of a hold for four seconds not at lockout but near the top with a four second negative and a regular speed positive. This is very intense and to add even more at the hold since static contraction is our strongest strength we will push or pull depending on the exercise increasing the weight on the hold close to 50% increase. When we finish 5-7 reps of these when finished we are usually crossed eyed, hear an imaginary phone ringing and dripping sweat. Everyone I have showed this to has said they are brutal and are incorporating them in their workout. Thanks for all the great tips.

Hi Ben - for years I've been reading, hearing (you name it) that you should arch your back / lower spine while training lats - both in horizontal and vertical plane.Arching the spine is supposed to support stronger shortening and thus better contraction of lats. By preaching keeping the abs engaged (and thus keeping the spine straight, i.e. not arched) you advise just the opposite of arching the back. Could you please explain the rationale behind it? All the bestcfrom Poland.

Hey B-Pak, do you always prefer to eliminate most of the leg contact on to ground, or do you use such movements (split stance, cable pulls without any seat and counter-balancers etc.) that also challenge your mid section (to work your stabilizers)? If so, do you think it hampers the mean isolative factor? Yes, I understand it wouldn't be purely bb...

rows for thickness pulls for width, narrow grip thickness, wide grip for width
@megaguitar01
@megaguitar01 10 жыл бұрын
Ben llwellyn is pulling some bro science there. You have to look at the line of pull, often when you are pulling perpendicular to your body you are engaging "thickening" elements because the traps and other retractors are also being engaged. The Width is often with pulling parallel to your body. close grip and wide grip is just what's comfortable not what makes you wider or not.
@benllewellyn1887
@benllewellyn1887 10 жыл бұрын
megaguitar01 'close grip and wide grip is just whats comfortable' lol, wide pulling movements target the lats, narrow grip targets more rhomboids and trapezius, you were rite about the angle tho
