A Via Ferrata ("Iron Way") is a cross between hiking and rock climbing. Vertical ascents and sketchy traverses are aided by iron rungs, pedals, and ladders while connected to a safety cable. While easier Via Ferrata routes do not require much technical skill, they do require heart! The Tahoe Via Ferrata on the slopes of Olympic Village is the first via I ever did (the "Sundial Arete" route) and it was epic!
Shoutout to @alpenglowexpeditions9587 Tahoe Via for making the day great!

That looks really cool. You should try canyoning if they have that in the US. Just like this is a bridge between hiking and rock climbing to go up a mountain, canyoning is a bridge between rock climbing and cliff diving to go down a mountain. I did it in Switzerland. You go down these ravines carved by large streams - parts of it you are belaying, other parts climbing, diving into small but deep pools, or jumping across gaps and turning yourself around to slide down nearly vertical water slides shaped out of the rock.

Oh yeah it looks amazing, we have areas in the USA that are big on that but nothing too close to me. Hmmmm. :)

Wish we had some more of these in California. They're super common in Switzerland & Italy.

I noticed that you guys used a single carabiner lanyard system. I thought the industry standard was a double system. Did the company mention anything about this?
@BackcountryPilgrim
@BackcountryPilgrim Жыл бұрын
Good catch! Yeah I believe this system is unique to the Tahoe Via. They use a tool-locked carabiner with a gapped gate too small for the cable to go through but big enough to transition through the special anchors (you can see this a couple of times in the video). Using this system you cannot accidentally become unclipped so you do not need two lanyards (the purpose of which is so you only unclip one at a time at each anchor point). It basically makes it foolproof! :)

@@BackcountryPilgrim Oh, that's why the carabiner has that gap in there. Very interesting. Thanks for the explanation.
