Don't use a bunch of custom or factory custom rifles with non hunting profile barrels. No rear bag, just a bi-pod, factory ammo. It needs to be what the average Joe shoots. Say $1500 msrp and below. Tikka Savage, Bergara... Can't wait to see you prove him wrong.@@txpredatorhunting

Jim's comments and hunting videos also display his inexperience. For example his recent bear hunting video. Very jerky and rushed in his execution, placed his shot poorly on a small bear and eventually recovered it the next day. Then in the comments blames the cartridge and claims it isn't enough for bear.

@NorthRiverGuide he's pretty bad at being smooth and calmly taking shots. Just watch his triggerpull its so rushed. I've seem him do it in an elk video. I had to watch the bear video to see what you mentioned and he totally gut shot that bear. Totally his execution of the shot and terrible practice at long range and not the 6.5cm that caused a slow takedown.

I've spent 30 years hunting and competing in multiple disciplines at both local and national levels. I don't always agree with the conclusions on backfires channel, but I can understand why they come to this conclusion. His content has useful content for people who want to learn something. These guys seem like a pair of high school kids who think they are experts on everything because they killed a deer one time with equipment their rich daddy bought them, on a hunting preserve their dad's friend owns. I have no problem with talking crap to each other. That's not what these guys are doing. These guys are trying to elevate themselves at someone else's experience. That's something totally different.

It's definitely a combination of shooter, rifle, and ammo. I have 2 buddies each have Remington 770 rifles, one in 300 win mag and the other is in 270 win. Each were shooting their respective rifles around 3.5moa at 100yds with factory ammo. Each shooter shoots less than 150 rounds a year. Each rifle had the factory stock with the cheap 3-9 scope as sold from the store. I shoot 4000-5000 rounds a year. I was able to shoot each rifle consistently just over 2moa. I worked with each guy and their rifle. First set the barreled actions in Boyd's Prarie hunter stocks that are pillar bedded. Then rest the scope rails bedded in loctite and properly torqued. One guy selected a Bushnell engage 4-16, and the other selected a Athlon helos 4-20. Both scopes are first focal plane with illumination, and locking turrets. For their respective prices I was impressed with the glass quality and functionality of each scope. Once the upgrades were done and using the same factory ammo each guy preferred I was able to consistently shoot each rifle just under 1moa for 10 five shot groups. The 2 guys however were shooting just over 2 moa. One has dedicated more time to shooting and can now consistently shoot just over 1moa. The other guy shoots more than he used but not as much as the other and he has improved to around 1.5moa with his rifle/ammo. I developed a handload for the 270win that has consistently shot 5 shot groups under .5moa. All shooting has been done on a flat range at 100yds prone supported. None of us can be called true 1moa shooters. I shared this to highlight that all factors matter.

My thoughts on backfire’s video: it was pointed at educating people on terms and conditions (that no one reads except anal retentive people like myself). If I have the purpose of the video correct I don’t agree with the delivery. All warranties read like these rifle warranties. They are for marketing sales and give warranty to only a small percentage of situations. Just read your new truck’s warranty on mpg. Grammy will get better mpg than 16 year old Timmy in the same truck. My opinion is that the mechanical device and the person using it make up a system. Change just one and the system changes. This applies to a lot. You can’t leave out the person when measuring ability/performance.

^^^This! I think Wade missed the point of Backfire's video and I believe you(Wade) are both kinda saying the same thing. Hear me out... He is saying that there are lots of factors why most "guns" can't shoot 1 moa. If you listen closely he is saying most people THINK the gun will shoot 1 moa AND ignore all the steps to achieve that 1 moa. He does suggest that most guns are CAPABLE of getting 1 moa, BUT you need the right ammo, a good scope, the right wind, the correct shooting form and discipline, etc.

Love it. Every other episode should be calling other folks out on their bullshit. It’s where y’all shine. For the experiment, take a factory Bergara, Springfield, etc….(rifle that will shoot). Wade shoots it to prove accuracy is sub moa. Then have the customers shoot the same rifle/ammo combination. It will eliminate the rifle variable and show that it really is the shooters fault most of the time.

I've always wondered about this. I had a rifle, that when the bite was cold was a 1min gun. Second shot it moved up and to the right 6min, then 8 then a 2-4min cluster from there. Once it cooled down, back to accurate. Not exactly the usual experience.

Thanks for addressing my comment and to your response I say fair enough. Admittedly I only watched backfire’s video once and my take away from it wasn’t a studied response. Humor aside my opinion on “is the moa guarantee a hoax” is your statement at 27:54 is correct. Both are true simultaneously. The best way to operate as a shooter is to first assume you’re at fault. But, I also don’t want to buy from a company that is going to tell me it’s just my fault when I get a lemon…and there are more than one company that will do so. After all it says right on their website their product shoots 1 moa so it must be the shooter’s problem. I’m not saying companies are intentionally sending bad product out. I’m only saying I expect a company to stand by their guarantee when the eventual lemon is put out without requiring the customer to spend hundreds of dollars on various ammos with video documentation to prove the gun is at fault.

What if @backfire sends one of his personal rifles that he says doesn't meet the 1MOA guarantee to Wade with a box of the ammo he used. That way we can see if it is the shooter, or if Wade's groups end up close to backfire's groups, then Wade can test other loads to see if it's ammo.

I get exactly what I want in every component and I know the components are perfect, or at least a lot closer to perfect than mass produced rifles. Go into a gun shop and pick up several mass produced rifles off the shelf and inspect the barrels with a borescope. You'll be SHOCKED by how HORRIBLE the bores are. Take the action to a gunsmith and have them true it up and get everything square. You'll be surprised by how bad the actions are on mass produced rifles. I'll never buy off the shelf rifles ever again.

Gday fellas, just wondering do you actually have any data written down on what the average group size is for the factory rifles you’ve tested with factory ammo? You seem fairly confident that it’s less than 1MOA but as far as I can workout unless you actually have a fairly consistent written record of all the groups you’ve shot, it’s pretty hard to overcome selection bias with statements like this. I’ve heard a couple of people in the industry now (Joseph von Benedict, Jayden Quinlen) say that 1 moa three shot average accuracy is what you should expect or even above average, so I’d like to know what your basing your contradictory opinion on.

I think I agree with Jim's take that most people at a range who think they can shoot a 5 shot 1 moa group with a "factory big game hunting rifle" on command cannot. Now you switch that to small caliber centerfires aka .243/6.5creed/.22 creed/22-250/ect and I think people just shoot better and the number of people who could shoot tight groups goes up. But I also think he did himself a dis-service in the video by talking predominantly about manufacturer "guarantees" instead of the real fundamental reason most guys factory hunting rifle set up isn't punching a moa group of holes into paper 5 times at 100. Some times it seems like it is super easy to get a rifle and it just shoots out of the box. The first ammo you try in it is the one it likes, and you are one your game that day. But I have had rifles that 4 different options later I found something I could live with when I was doing my part for group size or it just finally "got broken in" and started shooting better. Although I agree with your take as it is similar to mine. The number 1 reason is the shooter not doing their job (doesn't mean they cant, just that they are not for that group). 2 that ammo may be "quality ammo" but it doesn't mean your rifle will shoot the best group it can shoot with it over another option or a custom tailored handload just for that rifle. 3 the optic may not be mounted properly for the shooter/scope/rings. 4 the rifle may just be too new and not broken in (hell I ran 100 rounds of Remington core lock through a new rifle the other day to break it in before I even attempted to sight it in with the ammo I wanted to use in it for hunting). And 5 once all other options have been exhausted it might be something to do with the rifle. In which case its probably easier to go have a good gunsmith look it over to determine what's up and maybe send it back.

Are you testing starling and hornady brass? Curious if you like one over the other, may not make a difference too. I like the banter and opinions, keep it up. I’m probably not right in the head, guess I can blame that on my up bringing 😂

as a reloader i am not a fan of starline brass, the primer pockets loosen up much sooner than every other brass i have shot. this was a couple years ago so could have changed since then but when compared to other brass that i was able to get 8-10 reloads before the primer pocket became too loose to starline that i was getting 4-5 shots. i was competition shooting at the time and shooting lots and having to buy new brass in half the amount of shots gets pretty expensive over the course of a year.

Wade, you are Hysterical, dont change a bit. You are correct, most all modern rifles will and do shoot a minimum of 1 MOA and normally better than that with decent factory ammo. The problem is with the shooter and if you get them amped up by watching/engaging them with cameras for a pod cast, they will shoot worse.

All my rifles would be considered hunting rifles. They’re just off the shelf rifles. From 17 hmr to 7 mag. Quite a few savages, ruger, howa, cva, sako, bergara… I handload and it’s pretty easy. Have had a few over the years that didn’t shoot that great. Got rid of them. Also some have been picky and had to keep trying different loads but for the most part can take just about any decent bolt action rifle off the shelf and have it shooting that with very little load development.

Its a combination of everything but I believe the shooter is the most impactful. The ammo is the 2nd impactful. The rifle is the 2nd but every rifle shoots differently. I have had rifles that actually shoot better groups out a warmer barrel and a slightly dirty barrel. I have a 6.5 prc that holds worse groups once you run a cleaning patch through it. Takes first 2 shoots seem to be wild cards.

The issue with KZbinrs, is that most seem to be sycophantic hobbyists that are self taught with no real experience. That’s why you hear some wild takes and they can’t shoot until their 50th professional firearm review lmao

Definitely start up a similar challenge. I would love to for the predator hunting community to flex skills. I truly believe guys who shoot more often at night, either under nods, clip-ons, and thermals, have a better understanding of shooting habits, and better gear/ skills. Make the announcement on all your platforms, invite people from all walks, with all sorts of gear. Let's see how hard we can prove theories here.

I do not see any difference in velocity or accuracy with a cold bore shot, but I do see a velocity difference with the first shot out of a clean barrel. My 243 runs 3158 out of a clean bore and 3190 after that first shot. This doesn't affect group size at shorter distances, but I do allow for the slower velocity of a clean bore If the first varmint I'm targeting is at a longer range. I have a 7 Rem Mag that runs close to 100 FPS slower on the first shot out of a clean barrel. Again, no change to group size at 100 yards. So, the 7 Rem Mag always goes hunting with a dirty barrel.

yea it totally makes no sense for manufacturers to put out a product that is not as precise and accurate a tool as possible when they have the means to do it. It would only benefit the manufacturer to put out the most precise work possible if they are interested in selling more!
@AnthonysOutdoors

If that were the case, there'd be no reason for hand loading and custom rifle builders. Companies are in the business of making money. They will put out a product they believe is good enough for the general user. Most shooters aren't as good as they think they are and gun makers know it. They can get away with a mediocre product for the majority of shooters and they'd never know the difference.

@@AnthonysOutdoors but on the other hand I have picked up Savage rifles and Ruger rifles, budget hunting rifles, off the shelf and have achieved under 1 inch groups *with the right ammo*. and also, that was factory ammo.

I have a Howa barreled action that shoots lights out and I paid less than 400 for it. platforms like the Ruger American have made a name for themselves for performing at this level, I regularly shoot sub moa with factory loads with my Rugers, CVA, and Howa.

@@AnthonysOutdoorsI would argue that those that are handloading for hand fit custom rigs are striving for consistent 1/4” groups, and are likely in the competition realm of shooting. Other than that, a more expensive factory rifle will have better components all around like the stock, bolt shroud etc or youre paying for the name *cough* Sig. With something like a Ruger you are paying for the cold hammer forged barrel and chunky receiver, which is offered for a low price having a cheap stock with a plastic trigger guard and so on.

One of the issues I have is factory rifles claim 1 moa using match bullets. You should not hunt with that stuff. Hunting ammo tends a to be less accurate.

I think you should have a thing, invite Ol Backfire, bring some guns, factory “hunting” rifles and some PRS or other type competition guns, and do a thing kindof like he did. Although I fully understand your “pettiness”, Not petty… like sorry not sorry… I dont think there would be any animus towards him and I think it would be pretty cool to actually have a sub-MOA gun that would remove the bad rifle component to test the shooter, and have some factory rifles that would further test a shooter, just to kinda settle this a bit
