Dang that was a spiffy vid there! Yeah, I did a wilderness survival trip in scouts. Except I was out there like Bear Grylls, staring fires and building big shelters from the stuff around me and whatnot. Then there was everyone else. One older kid 1-up'd me by using space blankets around a small fire that bordered his shelter to create an 70 degree mini tropical paradise, and a younger kid got in on that, even though he didn't really do much. I used a tree that was almost fallen over, but had hit some other trees so it was leaning at a steep angle. Put up layers of large, then smaller stick, leaves, more sticks and more leaves, and had my own personal rainproof shelter.... which 2 other kids begged to sleep in and my anxiety about saying no wouldn't let me say no. We had a pretty comfortable night. It got cold and rained a bit, but we were alright and stayed dry. One group of kids though didn't do so well. There were about 5 of them that wanted to make a fort out of tarps. They used 4 trees in a sort of rectangle, put up walls, and used one big tarp stretched flat across the top as their roof. So, you know how I said it rained? That roof tarp started collecting a bit of a pool of water in it. The cheap rope they were using can only stand so much, and one rope finally gave way halfway through the night. They all drowned and we never did wilderness survival again. Okay no, they just got soaked. If there was ever a time to facepalm, that was it. They were the entertainment that trip. Also I learned that strapping a pocket knife to a stick and trying to use it as an ax makes it a broken pocket knife! Overall though, I actually enjoyed it, and ended up doing a whole week-long 50 mile hike without a tent - just a tarp, some rope, and a little net to prop up over my head to keep mosquitoes off my face.
