In most shows, the villain laying out all the main characters flaws and sins would make the hero realize how wrong they’ve been and change their ways in how they act. In this show… it was to be an excuse for a clip show and to save money. Pathetico.

God you could write an entire thesis on how the 90s did female empowerment by just making female characters into the most psychotic people imaginable. Charmed is a perfect mix of what would become both the 'girl boss' trope and the toxic self care movement, where it's malignant narcissism justified as self empowerment and actualization. 'we deserve to be selfish' is a hell of a way to justify one of your supposed friends dying for your sins.

It's so interesting because in the Prue days Phoebe's powers made her the under dog of the trio, the one that couldn't magically shove away or freeze an enemy, and had to compensate that by learning bare hand fight and conjure spells on the go. No doubts the became in that period the sweetheart of fans and won her feud with Shannen Doherty because of that. From season 6 onwards the ineffectiveness of her powers shifted from her personal hurdle to be a better person and demon fighter to her not giving a shit about demon fighting. So much that there's nothing lost plot-wise. Even after she gets her vision power back, how many times does it manifest?

There was that incident in the episode where Phoebe turns into her teen self and she (now adult Phoebe) and Paige used a spell to turn Phoebe's former classmate who is now a criminal into Chris so that those Demons who Spit acid kill him to get Chris out of danger, that episode was very dark and Barbas should have used that clip (or the showrunner).

28:30 - Wait - so vanquishing just sends Demons back to Hell, not even that "we get eaten by bad CGI effects" place where Cole got to, but just sends them home? So demons can just... pop right back up again? They never truly die, then? Or how does this work?
@brandyloutherback9288 Жыл бұрын
God, I love the promos! They were the worst! Particularly the one about Phoebe as Lady Godiva?! Or the I Slept with a Zombie!!!
@gleamingroses2952 Жыл бұрын
Honestly for me I think the Charmed ones stopped being the heroines in 3 episodes prior where they murder a mortal man by making him shapeshift into Chris, when they had other options. Yes, the dude was a criminal and threatened to harm them, but that doesn't mean what they did was any better. Or in Season 7 where they team up with Avatars who took away everyone's freewill just to have their own little utopia, especially when the only reason they took it off was by remembering their own losses. It's when I lost the itty-bitty respect for the Charmed Ones. I also don't understand how Phoebe's powers were too expensive, Premonition was just a filter effect, Levitation was a harness and Empathy was a sound effect. It's like how by this point Piper's freezing power was used so sparingly because of lack of effects you'd almost forget she has it when she does use it.

Generally when they're teleporting with the big balls of white light its because they cast a spell to send themselves somewhere, same effect is used when they use spells to summon each other.

It's kinda weird to see the Charmed Ones being so upset with Darryl being killed when they killed him in cold blood for convenience in the Season Opener while letting his corpse rot for like twelve hours. It's not the same situation, but it's a little hypocritical when put in relation with how they treats him during the rest of the show.

53:10 - See that is why I love Grimm - the show makes it a point that Nick and his buddies killed a LOT of Wesen when it was convenient for them to dispose of the bad guys instead of arresting them (they are cops, they could do it) and how they are considered a boogieman by Wesen society as a result. And while Nick often does not show remorse for this and feels justified to kill the truly evil Wesen - murderers and worse - he does get a comeuppence every now and then, including being reminded of this by his captain (when it comes to light that he too is a Wesen). Unlike the Charmed Ones, who never suffer any consequences, Grimm has our heroes have to deal with things they did, often seasons later.

I thought Phoebe can't control when she gets a premonition. At least, that seemed to be the case before when she needed a vision to save an innocent. But I guess when it comes to dates, screw that, she can force a premonition cause she's in a hurry to go on dates.

IMO, When writting your own self-insert in a story it's quite easy to fall into having a protagonist-centered morality, especially when you have no supervisor to tell you that your hero sucks or is evil in a scene.

Re: Phoebe's lapdance for Cole, you're right. That was never really Phoebe -- it was a stripper in a demonic night club (just go with it, I know...) that had a glamouring power. I think you'd love the episode if you re-watched it, because her whole aim was to glamour as Phoebe to win over Cole, then kill Phoebe and take over her life. xD
