Someone in the comments probably told you all this already. But a) Pan am used to be North america. That's as much as we know about the world as a whole. I think. B) the finger salute is not a sign of rebellion or solidarity per se. When it first happens in the first book, katniss is taken aback because she never thought her community thought of her that way. It's often a sign of highest respectful goodbye at funerals.

One thing you guys seemed to get backwards was the painting of Rue on the floor of the training center. That wasn't done by the game makers. Peeta did that for his show of skills to remind the game makers that the games produce dead children. It was a political statement on his part to remind everyone of the true cost of the games. It wasn't done to psych Katniss out at all.

The painting of Rue was done by Peeta on purpose to remind them what the Games are good for: absolutely nothing, only to get children like Rue killed. Peeta is trying to show them he's part of the resistence, that he's not "a piece in their game". In the book, the painting is covered, but Katniss uncovers it and as soon as she does she gets infuriated (she's remembered of what they did to Rue) and decides to show them that she knows what happened to Seneca Crane and that she knows what they do to people.

In the books when Katniss goes to save Gale from being whiped she sees a peacekeeper named darius on the ground already, having been hit by the new head peacekeeper. She is told that Darius had tried to step in before she did. He was one of the peacekeepers who were friendly with the rest of 12, visiting the hob and even flirted with Katniss on new years (we learn this fact from Gale). he is one of the many characters we see in the books that add a sort of gray side of characters, who in lesser books would paint all peacekeepers/capitol as evil, but just a guy living his life.

Another reason Haymitch is “the way that he is”, is because when you win the games, part of the ‘riches’ includes a brand new home in an area of their district specifically designated for victors. Victors Village I believe. Each district has an already-built Victor’s Village. Haymitch is the only person from district 12 that has ever won the games. So when he isn’t being forced to parade around a new set of kids to be slaughtered, the rest of his time is spent totally isolated from other people in victors village where he lives completely alone. With the homes around him slowly rotting away, unoccupied.

What I love about Katniss is she's a subversion of the whole "Chosen one" trope. Instead of being chosen by faith or destiny, she's being chosen by the people or characters around her, as a symbol of rebellion. And she didn't even want or planned to. She just wanted to save her sister and just showed compassion towards the victims of the capitol. And her character won over people, even though she deemed herself as not easy to like.

This is maybe my favorite thing about the series ! She never wanted to be a symbol for the revolution, she just showed humanity and compassion and didn't realize that it was resonating with people all around panem. But then we see her accept that the only way to end the capitols horrific control is to start a war and she has to be the face of that war. The Seneca Crane moment was a lot larger than you guys gave credit. She was showing them that even people from the capital weren't safe from the hunger games and President Snow. That although 24 kids from the districts are forced to participate, the people in the Capital are also forced to participate and they can be just as dead as the districts are. The message was that none of those people behind the 'safety' wall were actually, in fact, safe.

I love the scene where Caesar is interviewing all the reaped Victors, and each of them is speaking out against the Games, but it's Peeta's "baby bomb" that turns the audience against the Games too. Brilliantly done. Also, huge kudos to Jennifer Lawrence in her reaction to the line at the end that there is no District 12. That transition from shock to grief to rage to determination, all playing out silently across her face, is a tremendous way to end the film.
@antitheticaldreamgurl2 жыл бұрын
To go a step further with the baby bomb, it's interesting that is what caused such a visceral response from the Capitol and audience. It's unfair for the unborn and finally causes an outrage from the Capitol, but not the 12-18 year olds getting slaughtered each year and then dealing with the traumatic ramifications for the rest of their lives...
@Ineksi Жыл бұрын
@@antitheticaldreamgurl That's at least partially explained in the books, too. The Capital is used to see those people die, and they don't make much of a connection to them. Once they are Victors, those people matter to the public and therefore to the people way more than some Tributes that were rounded up to disappear soon. That way they "felt" the loss off a baby in that frame a lot more than some random kiddo.
@Angel-ts8rc Жыл бұрын
Yes one of the intentions of the baby is to show how and where the government “values” life… they do all that for an unborn fetus but sit and cheer for fully fleshed out grown humans who survived the games. just one of the many connections of the series to real life governments and societies.

Just fyi because the movie glossed over this: Both Katniss and Peeta got the highest score (12) in their evaluation. Peeta drew Rue to hold the game-makers accountable for her death. Katniss 'hung' Seneca Crane, the previous game-maker who was sentenced to death after letting two tributes win. They gave them the highest score so that the other tributes would have no choice but to target them. Also, the mentors were communicating with the tributes that were in on it by regularly sending specific amounts and types of bread, indicating time and day of their rescue. The new game-maker made sure to have the wire in the arena so that they could break out. The tributes were instructed to protect Peeta, because Katniss would not cooperate with them if he died. (Peeta is also a fair amount more competent in the books.) Holding up three fingers is originally from District 12, a sign of thanks and a good-bye to someone you love. When Rue died, Katniss used the salute and it became a symbol for the revolution for the other districts. The 'freaky' dressed people in the background in their rooms during training are called Avox. The capitol cut out their tongues as punishment for rebelling against them. They are slaves and are also used against Katniss psychologically, since she knew both of her servants personally before they were enslaved.
@meghancardwell391510 ай бұрын
Also: when the new Gamemaker meets Katniss at the Mansion, he shows her a watch with the mockingjay on it and says “it starts at midnight”. He hints to her that the arena is a clock in this way. When she sees it initially, she just thinks he’s showing off some new Capitol accessory.

If I remember correctly, Beedee saying he wants to run the cable down to the water was a red herring for the cameras. His plan was always to tie it to a spear and throw it at the forcefield, but it doesn't work and knocks him out. Katniss arrives on-scene, finds him unconscious, sees the cable and the spear, remembers the talk from the training room about how to spot forcefields and how to exploit them, and pieces together what he was trying to do. I *think* Beedee failed to find a weakness in the forcefield within spear-throwing range, and just threw it at the wall, which is why he failed. Katniss then spots a weakness in the forcefield that's way too high to reach, so she ties the cable to an arrow and overloads the shield that way.

With the decadent capital it’s all about the feelings and not about what is actually good. The baby they wanted, because they were attached to katniss and peeta…they wanted saved. But another kid? About this trio thing, I'd like to point out that Katniss and Gale where never romantic before the games but they were partners, allies in a different kind of game of poverty and everyday survival. Maybe they would've ended there if she never volunteered... but they weren't before the games. The bond between her and Peeta, however, is born out of this mutual understanding of the games and trauma, something unrelatable to anyone else, and very true. The back and forth between the two has a lot to do with where they are at the moment, the dynamics of home vs the dynamics of the games and the capitol, what is real and what is for show, etc. She is not truly thinking of "romance" at any point in the story (for a while at least). It´s all about needs, warmth, companionship, caring and survival. Peeta gets that... Gale is a little more of a prick about it.

I love that you have noticed the growth in Effie's character, we know how difficult it is for a person with privileges to get out of her bubble and to see that little by little she begins to see the injustices of Panem is beautiful; when she still has some capitol attitudes you can't not love her because that makes her her. You still have to see mockingjay 1 and 2, which in my opinion are the most difficult to see, but not because they are bad movies, but because they have a different rhythm than the first two (even the book is like that) but they are certainly worth it!

In the books during the tour of all the districts the Victor presents a talent. Katniss pretended to be in fashion, but peeta is very talented at painting. He used this talent as therapy and painted many scenes from the first games. When you saw the painting of rue on the floor, that was what peeta did for the judges. In the book he told Katniss that he wanted the game makers to take a moment of responsibility for her death.
@catherinerothert78772 жыл бұрын
In the book, it's actually Peeta everyone is trying to protect, although their ultimate goal is for Katniss to survive so she can lead the revolution, because they know that Katniss won't go on if Peeta is dead/not there, which you'll see a lot of in the next movie

Beetee’s plan was to run the wire to the lightning tree and attach it to the spear (a knife in the book) and throw the spear into the force field to shatter it. The whole run the wire down to the water to electrocute people thing was just an excuse to get the other victors out of his hair and to give the Capitol (who can hear and see everything) a plausible explanation to what was happening. Unfortunately, Beetee was attacked and unable to implement his plan. When Katniss went running back looking for Peeta and came across the tree and the wire attached to the knife/spear she put it all together and finished the plan by attaching the wire to an arrow instead of the spear and letting it fly. The plan was never to electrocute anyone and always to bust open the arena.
@acomputervirus8668 Жыл бұрын
Fun fact, the painting of Rue on the floor was Peeta. He knew that the capitol would give Katniss a high score in training to make her a target, so he did everything he could to make himself seem worse. He was hoping that painting Rue as a victim to the very people in the room would make him seem like the bigger threat. It is because of this, because Peeta clearly makes a villian of himself, does Katniss hang the dummy of Seneca Crane. She allies herself with Peeta, and raises herself to his level. In the books, the two of them laugh about it afterwards, and talk about how they only want to work with each other.

one thing i was bummed that they left out of the movie was finnick getting bread from his district in quantities that represented how many days (or hours, dont remember exactly) there were left until they got rescued/shit went down. It was the way the rebels were communicating with them inside the arena. edit: another thing im sad they left out was the story of the avoxes (people who got their tongues cut off cuz they betrayed the capitol in some way). Katniss runs into an Avox girl she saw trying to escape in the woods of 12 when she was younger. And then theres Darius, a young and nice peacekeeper that worked in 12. He was nice and even flirty with Katniss, and when Gale gets punished in front of the whole district he tries to intervene and gets knocked out, and he's never seen again. Later when Katniss goes back to the capitol for the second games she runs into him, he's been turned into an Avox and assigned to her to make her feel bad. It is later revealed that when Katniss gets rescued from the arena Darios and the Avox girl (we never learn her name) were tortured to death. The girl died quickly because of shock, but Darius lasted much longer :c

This shows how finnick and beetee were in on it without u realising it at the time. Then later in the book u get: "There was a plan to break us out of the arena from the moment the Quell was announced. The victor tributes from 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 11 had varying degrees of knowledge about it. Plutarch Heavensbee has been, for several years, part of an undercover group aiming to overthrow the Capitol. He made sure the wire was among the weapons. Beetee was in charge of blowing a hole in the force field. The bread we received in the arena was code for the time of the rescue. When I was in grade 4 (yes, at about 9-10 years old) our teacher was reading the first hunger games book at lunch time, and me and some other girls asked her what she was reading. The whole class agreed it sounded like a great book, and we all eventually convinced her to read it to us during our reading time. She had to send home permission forms for our parents to sign to let us listen to her read it since the books are quite intense. It was an awesome way to be introduced to the series alongside about 24 other 10 year olds all reading a chapter every couple days. Everyones reactions and theories made it so much more fun. After that. I got really into the books and read the others as they were released. THIS IS THE BEST ONE. I love thay way her relationship with peeta is portrayed. i know they are young but the evolution of their relationship is so well done. it's not like they met, the movie ends, they love each other. it takes time and growth, it's such a mature take on a complicated, real relationship based on shared trauma and eperience, and honesty. they are never not honest with each other. i've always liked that about this series. Love from Argentina.
@AK-rx8gp Жыл бұрын
I love their relationship, how it was never explicitly romantic until the very very end of the series. It's way more realistic than if they had fallen in love earlier. We see them grow to care for each other and understand each other deeply but it only becomes romantic after the war is won and they're finally safe enough to think about romantic feelings. Usually i hate epilogue endings where it's like "they have kids now and they all lived happily ever after yada yada" but this is the one series where i really like that ending. Katniss was always too scared to even consider romance of children, but once she finally feels safe in her world she gets to experience those things. It's maybe not portrayed as well in the movies because you're not inside katniss' head , so when you see them kiss it's kind of like "oh they're in love" but in the books you understand that she's not thinking of romance, just comfort and care. Sorry for the essay lol but i love this series

Some stuff that didn't shown from the books 1. Haymitch won the 2nd quarter quill or 50th hunger games where 4 tributes were chosen from each district. 2. He also won by using the forcefield as a weapon and that's a no no from the capital and after the game his mom, brother and girl friend was killed. 3. It's a small detail but the peace keepers were not allowed to watch the hunger games that's why they don't know who the victor's are. 4. In the books pluterk had a watch with mokingjay ingraded in it. 5. Seneca crane didn't eat the berry maybe as a act of diffence but hung himself. 6.the person in the back is a avox someone mostly from the district or sometime from the capital too who broke some laws as a punishment capital cut their tounge and made them lifelong servant of the capital. 7. Peeta lost his in the 1st Book and Katniss her hearing in one ear. 8. Johanna won the game by acting weak so no other tributes count her as a thread so everyone just ignored her but when their are only a handful of tributes left she just went on a killing spree with her proficiency of using axe and won the game. After winning the game Johanna didn't comply with anything the capital told her to do as a punishment everyone she loved was killed. 9. The painting is done by Peeta to show the game maker that they're just killing innocent kids. 10. In the books all the district Victors are more friendly towards eachother. Even the career district Victors are just talking to each other and giving eachother advice on how use certain weapons etc. 11. In the books the blisters didn't washed off by water but they're given a cream that they've to apply to heal it
@specialagentweener10732 жыл бұрын
Actually katniss did loose her hearing after the first games but when she got out of the games they healed her hearing. She ends up using that as an excuse for her being able to hear the force field instead of letting the Capitol know that she can see the force field. She would use rock as a stepping stone to make sure she was "hearing" it right. She just didn't want the game makers to know that she could see what beetee and wiress saw when talking about the flaws in the system.

12. District 13 is always mentioned as having been destroyed in the war 75 years ago, and its ruins are sometimes shown on TV as part of a news story, but Katniss and Gale meet a mother and daughter in the woods who are on their way there, as though it were still a functioning district. The mother and daughter are eventually caught by Capital forces, of course, but meeting them makes Katniss realize that any time District 13 is shown on TV, it's always ever been the _exact same footage_ - meaning nobody actually knows whether District 13 survived and recovered or not.

Okay so, I haven't seen anyone explain this before, and this _is_ 4 months late, but I wanted to explain the 3-finger sign they do. That signal is a district 12 sign. Part of what makes the series and premise so good is that it takes the trajectory we've been on with so many things and then extrapolates it into a dystopian future. Televising everything? Putting people into increasingly dangerous situations to titillate further? Orchestrating "reality" for the sake of the viewing audience? Carefully curated appearance that is detached from all truth? A viewing public that feels entitled to more and more of other people's lives? On the one hand we can say to ourselves, "Well, it's not like that," but on the other, we have to confront how much our own behavior is laying the track that leads in that direction. These books and these movies *should* make us uncomfortable and stick in our minds.

41:36 yes, they are taking the bodys cause in one game they ate them cause there was no food. But the families, if I remember well, were upset cause they had no body to bury, so after that they were sending a hovercraft to "collect" the bodies
@snoopygonewilder2 жыл бұрын
I do not remember that at all. I don't think they cared about the families, to be honest; its probably more to do with the capital citizens being scandalized by canibbilism--but not by children murdering children 😑

Yeah the tv viewers did not like the cannibalism - apparently that was too far for them

Not sure if anyone commented it in the previous video, but peeta lost his one leg at the end of the first games. Which means that when he had to run, he wasn't that fast

And because of this, he stumbled while running away from the fog.

As terrifying as President Snow is, Donald Sutherland KILLS this role and weirdly makes me like the character

I read the book just before this movie released. And my mind was blown the first time I saw how the movie adapted/explained the arena quirks. When I watched it, it gave me this weird feeling as if I was reading the book again as I was watching it. Very rarely have I felt that.

I love movies like these because it show the director read and respected the book first before adapting it to a movie 👍

I don't know if I remember it correctly from the books (it's been a long time) but I think they mentioned in it that most people from District 12 can't swim because they don't really have the opportunity or need to learn it. Katniss learned to swim but Peeta could only hold himself above the water. That made that scene in the water so much more dramatic. Oh and that's why Katniss didn't know what Finnick was doing when he tried to save Peeta. I don't think they often have situations in District 12 were they need to perform CPR.

Haymish was also messed up because hes the only mentor in 12 and has had to train dozens of kids only to watch them be slaughtered (Katniss and peta were the first winners in 25 years from 12). Being a victor was his eternal hell, so he would drink himself into a coma and stopped caring about the tributes so it would stop hurting so much.

I think you may have missed the reason the Image of Rue was on the ground, when Katniss walked in for her assessment. PETA did that to remind her what she was fighting for, it was done for motivation and not as a bad thing.

Is almost a consensus within the fandom that catching fire is the best book and movie (as a lot of the comments are saying), but I really disagree 😅 the last book and the last 2 movies are full of world building and politics and seeing Katniss adjust to everything is an incredible ride, so they are my favorites… they also have some of the best scenes both visually and emotionally. Plus they develop Finnick and he’s my favorite hahah Really excited for you next reactions

I love Finnick’s character a lot, which is why I was disappointed with his death in the books. His character was developed and made awesome only to briefly talk about his death in like a few lines?☹️😢 Still a great character tho

Reminder that Katniss (and Peeta) are only 17. It’s easy to forget when the actors are a bit older. They were 16 in the first movie and 17 for the rest. Gale is 18 I think.
@HeIsLiterallyMe_2 жыл бұрын
To answer some of the questions you guys asked in regards to Katniss and Gale’s plan to run away, they’re essentially planning to live off the land. Panem is a country, and it’s situated mostly within the same borders as the US, but slightly altered due to extreme flooding along the coasts. It’s been a while since I’ve read the books but if I remember correctly there little to no knowledge about the outside world stated. There is history known about the world, ie. Katniss recalls knowledge about the Roman Empire, but not much else.

That party highlights so much of their society. While some people starv, they have a liquid they take do throw up only to keep eating - it's not for sustenance or necessity. It's just because they can.

"Gale, you know how i feel about you" basically means "you are my family and i love you, but i have never really allowed myself any romantic feelings and i also have a hard time expressing my feelings in general" in the books they look very alike and its said that people mistake them for cousins all the time but their families always thought they would end up marrying each other. but again, Katniss never really allowed herself to think of anyone in that way and like you said, Peeta is now the only one who truly understands her. (also keep in mind Katniss and Peeta are both 17/18, Gale is 19/20 at this point i think)

A few notes: -Panem is what’s left of the USA, set I believe over 200 years after present day. -Katniss’ family (and the rest of District 12) don’t get in trouble for doing the hand signal because it’s a tradition from District 12, so it’s traditional/normal to do. It’s not okay in other districts because it’s not part of their history and is used only as a symbol of the rebellion.

(Commenting about halfway through the reaction so I don’t forget what I wanted to say haha) This one is my favorite Hunger Games movie (and book!). Oak isn’t alone with the icky feeling this whole thing gives… the whole concept of the games is really disturbing and upsetting. Also, as for the question about the world, this is all in the very very distant future. Panem used to be North America, and the districts are each different sections of the US (with a bit of overlap into Canada and Mexico). Sometime long before the series started, a mixture of global warfare and climate change caused the sea levels to rise so Panem is smaller than North America today, and also more separated from the rest of the world because the oceans expanded. I think it’s also implied that, during all that past conflict, society basically collapsed (all over the world) and was then re-built from scratch, and that’s when Panem was born. (Sorry for the lengthy history lesson haha)

With D12 being in the Appalachians, and the Capitol around the Rockies.

Incase it hasn’t been explained, the purpose of the games is as punishment to the districts for what happened during the war. It is to remind them that the capital will always be more powerful than those in the districts. These movies and the books are my all time favorites so I know way too many details.

I have a question. Has every district had both a male and female tribute win throughout the years? What if there was a district that has only had one person win the game, how then would they be able to send both a girl and a guy?

I had not heard they were doing a film adaptation. I really liked the book. You see why Snow is the way he is and yet also made me feel for him a little bit which I never thought would be possible after the first books.
