This one and the next made me cry I’ll be honest and as hard as it is to watch I still love them, some of my favorite movies of all time. One of the movies to show the true cost of war where you feel it. It makes you realize the sacrifice made by others through history but also makes you realize that war should not be something to take lightly or “enjoy”. Excellent series. Don’t put those Kleenexes away yet. Next one is emotional too.

My bestie and bawled in the theatre together, we knew whar was coming from reading them and we were still blown away by the emotional stamp this film leaves. War is Hell. It sounds crazy to say but Katniss goes through even more in the books and is even more beat up and traumatized so she's kind of one of the most badass war heroes in fiction for facing shit head on anyway

Another reason why Snow wanted Katniss to convince HIM she really is in love with Peeta. He's only a useful pawn to hurt Katniss with if Snow can make it hurt real bad. She played right into his hand and didn't even realise. (This is not to say that losing Peeta wouldn't have hurt Katniss without being in love, that's not the kind of person she is, but I hope the point gets across.)

One thing I've found is easily overlooked or forgotten is how young Katniss and Peeta are throughout the series. Both were 16 when sent into the games, and at 17 years old, Katniss Everdeen was made the face of a revolution and Peeta Mellark was held captive and tortured to insanity. They're only kids, and that makes it all the more heartbreaking.

Thanks Sidney. So well said. I love The Hunger Games series; it's my favorite, and I love Katniss. I've watched the movies many times and it always bothers me that both Katniss and Peeta are really just babies who endured true horror, not even just once, but over and over. Geez, Katniss had never even been kissed before being sent into the games to KILL other children. The premise of the series is horrific, but it really tells a compelling story. .PEACE.

I think that's why I enjoy the books so much since its so obvious how young and naive they were, making the story that much more horrific and interesting. I have no doubt that Josh and Jennifer did amazing portraying these characters, but I wonder what it would have been like if the directors chose younger looking actors. Like if you take Cato for one. He was 19 i believe but he had very mature features, imagine if you had actors like your average looking teenage boy how much more terrifying the movie would be.

This is why Joanna is so angry all the time. She tells Katniss there's no one else she loves that they can hurt. And the same thing happened to Haymitch. That's what is so disgusting. The district were coerced into accepting this barbaric system instead of an all out war, they were told if you fight and win, you will live the rest of your life in riches and splendor, when in reality, it's almost even worst because year after year you have to see kids from your district die in the arena, and if you refuse the play the game, you will also lose people you love. it's sick.

It's so sad how things turned out for Peeta because in the first movie he said to Katniss that even if he were to die in the arena he didn't want the capitol to change him and make him something he is not. The image you guys had of the Hunger Games is actually pretty common and I think its one of the reasons this movie is the lowest rated (imo unfairly) in the franchise. Despite the first two movies having a lot of heavy themes, a lot of people were just watching them for the fighting and suspense. This movie mostly strips away the "cool action" and doubles down on hitting viewers with themes of war, PTSD and propaganda...which is clearly the story Suzanne Collins wanted to tell. I think it tells this story really well, but perhaps audiences found it jarring because it wasn't the story they wanted to be told.

Saw the movie several times before but just realized that Peeta gives Katniss the warning about approaching bombers shortly after she sings "where a dead man called out for his love to flee". His only goal from the beginning was to protect Katniss and his family (which Snow threatened to kill). When he saw the footage of District 12, he realized that Snow had been lying and his family was likely already dead. He is probably already persuaded that he is going to die after all the torture, so he is the "dead man" in the song. Him warning Katniss about the bombers really is the dead man calling out for his love to flee.

The books are explicitly anti war so yes. You are absolutely supposed to be uncomfortable with what you’re watching. Collins didn’t want to sanitize or glamorize any of it. The books are even in first person present tense which makes everything feel much more immediate. I think when these books were at their most popular a lot of folks mischaracterized them. There’s still a debate amongst our school district about whether the libraries should make the books available to 5th graders. The writing style is easily accessible, which means 5th graders can definitely read them, but the social and emotional content is way too mature for almost all of them. The ones who are mature enough to understand tend to get so distraught.

It's insane how even though we're in 2023 these books are still incredibly relevant. I also do not want to have kids because I'm black and part of the lgbtq+ community. Even though humanity should be over it, you still experience homophobia and racism anywhere. I mean in some countries you can even get killed for it without any guilt. I'm from Germany so you can probably imagine that the Russian - Ukranian war isn't the best thing and global warming is messing us up. I could never live with myself if I willing set a child into this world, especially considering how long humans live now. I might adopt a kid to make sure it can have a good life but yeah.

@@ot7biasedmashups I sorry you feel that way but it's understandable, some people in this world suck. Adoption is a good compromise to become a parent without having to bring new life into the world. Something the movies didn't show it's that the Capitol sells attractive victors to wealthy residence to have sex. They would tip them, but instead of money, Finnick prefer to be told secrets, that's how he kept alive after. So in the scene when he was gaining time to rescue the victors on the Capitol, he was telling all the secrets he kept for years, and how really works the Capitol. (And also tells about how Snow stayed in power all this years, by poisoning and killing anyone that possible threat to his spot. The ulcers he has in the mouth by drinking the same glass with poison, has a really strong smell of blood, and that's why he tries to cover with white roses.) It's really sad how in the second movie when Katniss ask him "How people pay for the pleasure of your company?" he responds "with secrets", but at what cost.

The Capitol's leitmotif is the color white. After Peeta is rescued by district 13, he is being imprisoned and restrained in a white cell, meaning the Capitol still has full control over his mind. In the books, Effie's character *doesn't* grow like that. After book 2 she doesn't really show up again until the very end of Mockingjay, where we see her in the capitol and she's described as having a "vacant expression" iirc. It is assumed she was held captive (and possibly tortured) by Snow because of her connection to Katniss and Haymitch. In the books, Katniss' team of stylists (not Cinna but his assistants kinda?) grow close-ish with Katniss and they are the ones that are brought to 13 in Mockingjay, so Effie kind of takes that position in the movies. I do like the way they changed her storyline for the movies but I always thought it was weird that district 13 held no animosity towards her. They get mad about what Peeta says when he's held captive in the Capitol, but she was always the face of the reapings, a very public person that essentially symobolizes the games, and nobody really cared?

And, when Effie is first shown in District 13, Plutarch tells her she isn't a prisoner. But in the book, Katniss finds her stylists in a prison cell being starved & tortured by District 13 soldiers. Exactly, and don’t forget that District 13 basically imprisoned the three stylists in horrid conditions after they had tried to get an extra piece of bread in the cafeteria. They’ve had an abundance of food their whole lives and weren’t adjusting fast enough to not having that. So they were locked up and chained to the walls with sores on their wrists and their blood and shit and piss all on the ground around them. They were traumatized for the rest of the third book and were only allowed back out because 13 needed them to make Katnis presentable in the propos. I wish the final book had more Effie and I wish the movies showed how the stylists changed throughout the story along with Katniss’s opinion on the people in the Capital.

Trigger warning sexual abuse/child abuse: In the movie it's somewhat implied, but in the books its made clearer that after winning, President Snow pimped out teenage Finnick to rich people in the capital under the threat of his family's safety. When he talks about "secrets" it's because to protect himself he would get the people that bought his time to spill secrets about the capital while in bed. I understand since the movie was very much directed towards younger audiences, they left it vauge. But it's very direct in the book that his playboy attitude was his subtle way to tell Snow he didn't own him.

When Answer said that Katniss didn't know there was a District 13 there might even be a 14, I just wanted to say that all the Districts, including Katniss, knew about District 13, they just didn't know there were survivors. During the first rebellion the Capitol bombed District 13. The Capitol every once in a while would show the District's footage of a barren wastland that was Distict 13 that was supposedly radioactive and unlivable. They lied to remind the Districts of the Capitol's power and the consequences that the rebellion had for the District. I recomend reading the books because they have more information and world building than the movies but the movies are still amazing. I really enjoyed your guys' video though :)

Yes! And some people who watched that footage of district 13 in the other districts actually figured out it was a fake. You see, there was a bird in the exact same spot flying the exact same way to somewhere off-camera every time they showed it. That meant that they kept replaying the same footage they got from years ago. The capitol knew all along that district 13 was alive and well, but they made a deal; I don't remember exactly what it was, but I believe it was along the lines of if district 13 would pretend to be dead, the capitol would just leave them alone; hence the repeating footage.

@@ateam404 District 13 dealt with nuclear weapons. The Capitol and District 13 ended up making an agreement since they were afraid of 13’s nuclear weapons. During the first rebellion, if 13 stayed out of the fight, the Capital would leave 13 alone since 13 was the biggest threat being military with nuclear power. The Capital bombed the surface of 13, then used it as a warning to other districts of the Capital’s power which pretty much ended the rebellion. Since then, 13 had been recovering (repopulating their ranks, dealing with a plague that killed children, etc…) and biding their time to one day fight back.

The books are definitely worth reading. They go so much further into depth about how much control the Capitol has over the Districts and how cruel they can be, how all-seeing and all-knowing they are. The story is written in first person present tense too which makes it feel like things are happening to me right now rather than happening to someone else in the past (the more common third person past tense format in fiction). The love triangle is a little teenagery but it's fine because it's not really a focus of the story - Katniss basically has the attitude that she has no time for or interest in pursuing boys (although she loves them both in different and changing ways throughout the series).

The Hunger Games is what really got me into first person storytelling. It's such a challenging perspective, narratively, and I love that. It also makes you empathize more with the protagonist because you're experiencing the story through them rather than being told what happened by an all-knowing narrator.
@Viewable11

Collins' choice of using present tense was brilliant because it makes the reader *feel* the outrage over the injustice, the fear from being overheard all the time everywhere, the panic of impending death in the arena, etc more than any other other writing style could have done. One of the most memorable lines of the trilogy is for me in Mockingjay: _"Another shell explodes at a short distance from me and the shock wave knocks me back against the wall of the building. [she describes the pain in various body parts] ... Then another shell detonates, closer this time. I feel like I am made of glass, with many cracks going through me, and the next shell that will explode will shatter me into thousands of pieces."_ The most impressive scene was the battle in front of the president's mansion. I was in shock and awe. After reading the books, I learned that Collins' father had many long talks with her about his experiences in the Vietnam war. That gave me an idea how Collins can be able to describe the desperation, fear, panic, terror and pain of war so well. I felt the fear and the pain in my gut.

@@sam_c95 I am also going to read Dune after I will have finished reading Orwell's "1984". I read Huxley's "Brave New World" before I began with Orwell's book. Both "1984" and "Brave New World" are among Collins' most favored books, and I can already see the many similarities between these two and the Hunger Games series. I also finally understand why there has not been made a good film version of "Brave New World" yet. The story is told in a laconic/slow pace and there are not really any "action" events in it, but the content is *extremely* disturbing on a psychological level. It is so much disturbing, that I think it will never be possible to make a good film adaption of "Brave New Word". I am now in the middle of reading "1984" which means its hardest part is ahead of me, but it won't get close to Brave New World. TRIGGER WARNING: Brave New World will never get an adequate film version because one of its core themes is the systematic destruction of the human psyche by sexual child abuse by the state.

I have a friend who moved to the States from a village in Africa, and she watched this trilogy along with a few other war movies (she's a badass who's seen things unheard of). She basically said aside from the technology and "games", this is nothing compared to what they saw in their villages daily. They'd kill the men, brutally, capture their sons and recruit them into the war, and killed babies and women-brutally. She said the difference in these movies compared to real life is that people fought back in the movies, in these villages people just ran and hid, they had no hope, and it's been that way for generations. They'd wipe out villages without warning. She was able to escape after meeting a missionary who goes in and rescues people from these areas. She was absolutely unfazed by these movies, it was nothing to her while it vexed us, it may just be a movie but there are parts of it that are very real and much worse. I'm glad it vexed you, and made you angry, it shows your human side and goodness and I world of evil.

Some people just want fun superhero movies full of magic and jest that they can get immersed into and there's nothing wrong with that. For Oak, since you’re reading Harry Potter, I really recommend reading The Hunger Games trilogy as well. While the movies are good, they really glossed over a lot and messed up some of the characters/dynamics, particularly Peeta. The books are a lot more brutal, go into more depth (the world-building is thorough so a lot of the questions you had regarding this fictional universe that the movies didn’t really answer are well explained), and the characters are more fleshed out, which makes the books more powerful. And yes, while the concept is really disturbing (it’s supposed to be and it’s actually nice to see a reactor acknowledge the severity of the concept rather than just gush over the action; people who simply derive enjoyment out of the concept are the very people the author is criticizing/sending a message to), the series as a whole touches upon many important topics and critiques a lot of issues that are relevant to our society today. For example, if you look at how popular reality TV is, it’s not hard to see how society could stray down this path; there are already reality shows that make money out of people’s misery. Add desensitization to war/violence to the mix, and there you have it. I’ve reread the books over four times now (I’m actually in the middle of another reread), and the messages still hit hard every time. It’s also such an easy read. The writing is simple yet still able to deliver a punch to the gut with a single line. P.S. The movies downplay the cruelty of District 13 (they intentionally parallel the Capitol in a lot of ways-Peeta wasn’t wrong in saying Katniss shouldn’t trust them so easily). In the books, they actual kidnap Katniss’ styling team and then imprison them in horrible conditions as punishment for breaking a rule once (Effie doesn’t actually have much of a role in Mockingjay in the books). I really detest that they erased 13’s extremism in the movies by having Plutarch say that Effie was welcome to come and go. This parallel to the Capitol is important to the plot and one of the messages of the story.

As far as movie adaptations go, I do feels these did a great job of capturing the most important parts of the books. But, yeah...there is always loss when you adapt a movie. Peeta is definitely a bit off in the early movies, we lose some Haymitch context by not seeing his games, Finnick's big reveal is underplayed. But, I think Johanna in Mockingjay Part 2 was probably the biggest victim of the cutting room floor. Movie Peeta, Haymitch and Finnick all ultimately hit all the key character notes from the book, but Johanna's character arc was definitely cut short. On the flip side I think movie Effie is actually better than book Effie.

Effie is a character everybody should love. She was born and raised in the Capitol. And, like everyone else from there, they're indoctrinated to believe what the capitol portraits as a reality, and the information they get about the other districts by the media is heavily manipulated to make it look less bad. They know they're doing better than other districts because they're obviously the capitol and their income is better, but they don't really know at what extent everyone is less fortunate, and at what extent the public force pacifies everyone else. People form the capitol simply lack information in order to feel empathy about what's happening, because as they know, nothing really bad is really happening. Effie trinket is open about learning and seeing things differently. And every time she notices something different in reality than what's being promoted in the Capitol, she quickly understands it and cuts it off from her beliefs. And in her character development, you can appreciate how her Capitol-isms slowly vanish, and she slowly tunes down her attitude and way of dressing up and gets everytime more and more compassionate towards the other districts and everytime she gets more detached from the capitol, and starts noticing who the real enemy is, even if sometimes she won't admit it and pretend she's behaving differently because of other motives.

I think the opening of this movie is so sad and strong. Claflin's delivery was extremely good. The pain of knowing what the capitol was doing to the people that he loved was unbearable to the point that death to everyone including himself was better.

Gen Z grew up on these books/movies. Harry Potter taught us about racism, generational trauma, etc.. Hunger Games taught us to always stand up against tyranny, that the powerful thrive on the little people's misery. Divergent taught us that we don't have to fit into boxes. The main characters aren't perfect, they're flawed, scared, but they never give up. There are so many other pieces of fiction that have impacted us, and I'm so happy to see that now you get it too. Though it is admittedly geared towards younger people, there's definitely a lesson for everyone in these.

Watching this in November 2023 and it hits even harder because its literally happening right now. People, mostly children, being dehumanised and killed without mercy, hospitals targeted. People protesting but governments siding with the aggressors. The most shocking thing is how Hollywood, after decades of making movies like this, is defending "the capitol" and all sorts of atrocities it commits. It's really horrifying

My favorite thing about watching reactions to these movies is seeing people realize that The Hunger Games are straight up war movies. You go into it thinking the story is just gonna be teenage dystopia, until the moment Katniss learns District 12 has been firebombed. That was always the moment (for me) where it fully sunk in that I was reading a powerful story about experiencing and overcoming the horrors of war, rather than just a dystopian survival story. As a 16yr old it was so funny taking my mom to see the films, knowing I’d read the books and she hadn’t. She was expecting Harry Potter and got futuristic Saving Private Ryan instead 😂😂

Thought you might like this: The idea for the Hunger Games books came to Suzanne Collins when zapping through channels, and seeing reality TV and news footage of war. Also, her father was a US Air Force officer who served in the Vietnam and Korean wars. So I think the whole story, while fictional, is a message to the audience, about how fragile freedom and democracy are and our collective responsibility to protect our freedoms, but also how depraved we already are, if you think about how we do not bat an eye when watching kids get killed on the news, or humiliated for a shot at fame and fortune on reality TV.

Also this: the Capitol is much like Ancient Rome. Even its name is Panem (bread in latin). It is explained better in the books, but consider this: Rome used its circus to distract its citizens, as in "Panem and circenses", bread and circuses, food and entertainment, to keep them content, and thereby relinquish their power, which was then taken over by a smaller elite, eventually replaced with an emperor. As long as the capital had everything it needed, the system worked. And in Ancient Rome, only a very small percentage of the population were citizens with a right to vote in the first place. Same story as the Hunger Games, except it's actual history. Think about this: if you had lived in Ancient Rome and not been a citizen, how would you have felt about the circus? A place of entertainment or a weapon of fear? Has the world changed that much? Look how disillusioned our society is becoming with politics, how so many have stopped caring about it, and who is taking over all that power. Look what happened before. If we had lived then, would we ever have believed it could get as bad as it did? And if not, who is to say it could not happen again?

I love your commentary on Katniss being a reluctant hero and I think that’s what I love most about the books/movies, they show the reality of war. How it changes you, how there are no winners…I remember reading the last book and Katniss was so traumatized by her experiences and I think that’s more honest than a lot of books/movies where the hero is untouched by the terrible things they go through.

I get what Appleton Oak is saying. When I first read the books and watched the films, what stood out for me is how terrifyingly realistic it is. If you look at history - the holocaust, slavery, gladiator culture of Rome, etc - you can fully understand how one good nuclear disaster could cause humanity to fall into that dystopian “the rich and powerful playing games and using the common people”. It is a scary mirror to the cruel and base side of man.

In the books, all children of Panem are taught about the history of the uprisings and how District 13 was bombed and nuked. They always showed videos every year of what the the government said was the current state of that District. The images were always of massive destruction with no living soul left. But at one point someone finally noticed that the video was always the same exact video and not a new one like they were lead to believe year after year. District 13 originally specialized in military and police services. That is why they had underground bunkers where they were able to survive the bombings.

What I love about Book 3 and this movie is the focus on the ugly side of an revolution. The book goes more into Katniss mind and how broken she is and even after winning in the end. I think this movie and the book work very well together, because both show stuff that the other medium can't do as good. (The movie has scenes like the dam attack and the book the focus on how Katniss is just broken and doesn't really want any of this)
