First aid kit isn’t just tourniquets and pressure dressings. Good idea to have band aids and athletic tape for small issues, especially if you don’t regularly shoot large volumes. Sunscreen and bug spray, as needed. Contact solution if you’re blind like me Paster gun if you paste targets regularly-game changer And either a backup gun (preferably) or at least common wear/breaking parts

I second the ouchie boo-boo kit. I didn't know how many times I've seen people nick their things on metal feed lips (especially pistol mags) or catch a splinter from a shot up target frame or barricade.

One thing you didn't mention is a mag loader. Loading mags takes time out of the class so being able to quickly load them is nice.

Not being a jerk. I find the mag loaders slow down class. Maybe not the ones that skim from a plastic tray. Learn to stuff mags. When the instructor is talking start jamming mags. Drill ends. Tac mag. Stuff that empty mag.

Sir. Can I just say thank you for a little nugget of info you put in here? At one point you said a lot of guys have their grips too far forward on their rails and should actually move them back alittle bit. I had always wondered why I got so fatigued so fast and why my body was so uncomfortable. I moved my grip like 1 1/2 mlok slots back and it has made a WORLD of difference. Thank you.

I've never used ProGrip or any other grip enhancer while training. I saw it here on this video and thought I would give it a try. Holy smokes! How have I been shooting this long without it! Real game changer in general, but it will come in handy in the Texas summer. If you haven't, you should give it a try.

Spray adhesive for quickly putting up new targets, and I also have a 15 yard hank of paracord with a magnetic hook and knots tied at 3, 5, 7, 10, and 12 yards for easy yard marking if I'm on a range that doesn't have it already marked. I also have a laser range finder, but the hank gets used more and is inexpensive.

New to firearms ownership outside of 22 rifles and pistols. I REALLY appreciate your videos and your no nonsense approach. There's a rapidly growing number of guys and gals who have committed to learning how to shoot due to the "climate" of our country lately. A lot of us may be initially intimidated about being inexperienced at the range in fear of doing something foolish or even dangerous. I feel like your videos bring a perfect balance in the instruction. Thank you!!!

In addition to the IFAK, bring a snivel kit (first aid kit with bandaids, meds, and blister care), 1 roll of athletic tape, bug repellant, sunscreen, and decent shooting gloves. If you are likely to get wet or wash your hands outdoors, a backpacking towel is a thing of beauty. I also suggest a cheap paint can opening tool on a lanyard for extracting cases stuck in the chamber and a sectional cleaning rod for when there is no part of the rim to grab onto. If shooting prone, a shooting mat is nice, too (the Magic Carpet is a nice one). I would also suggest bringing a couple of extra magazines for each firearm. It's good to have spares in case a magazine becomes inoperative for one reason or another.

Awesome tip.. Buy a digital voice recorder. Sure you can use your phone. 2 is 1. Lol. But i had a class (not a gun/firing class) so i bought a recorder. On my flight back i popped my earphones on. And wrote down just the key takeaways. Also smaller so it can fit in your pocket instead of a notebook in your dump pouch. Funny. I use my old glock and sig plastic boxes for my cleaning kit and took kit. 😂 people sell them for 5 bucks or give them for free. I dont need to buy cause well i already have alot. Anyways. I put wrenches and screwdrivers in 1, first aid kit in another. And miscellaneous things like paracord, knife etc. In another in the trunk of my car. Label them. 😂

Drew, thanks for the call-out for rain in Florida. I get the feeling that you spent a little time rubbing elbows in Tampa, and you called it - a 0% chance in the Bay just means you're only getting rain in the afternoon. And as with the rain jacket (I think you were looking for 'wet weather gear' at one point) - always plan for the utter worst case scenario, clothing-wise. Rain in Tampa in the morning means soaked feet all day, even if it's the middle of summer. Rain in Columbus, GA in late fall means frozen toes. Always bring an extra pair of socks, and if you can squeeze it, an extra pair of boots, and keep all your spare clothes in a separate dry bag.

@6:47 even spiderbros like Drew! I brought two ARS, let me swap them around and cool off barrels between heavy drill sets. After taking a few of your classes, my thoughts. Some of which you said better but I wanted to echo. Mags, bring a lot. Worrying about having no loaded mags is not the way. Avoid having to run back and constantly reload mags. Dump pouch is a must. Great way to keep water on you and I notice I drink more with a bottle in the pouch. Also while I don't mind dropping mags on the ground by the end of the day I ache and it's nice not bending over to pick them up. lol Hat with a brim. Standing in the sun for hours makes it a must IMO. Long sleeve SPF shirt. One with a hood is even better to keep the sun off the back of your neck. Sunscreen. I failed on this, the shirt, and hat in the last class of yours I attended. By the end of the day I was fried. Didn't feel good and my brain started to check out for the day. If it's a 2 day course the second day is worse than it should be. Ibuprofen, pop early in the day. lol More food and water than I think I would need. Easy enough to keep it in the car in a cooler. Liquid IV, didn't know about it at the time, but now that I do I would for sure include it. Possibly consider medical tape for your fingers/hand. 3M Super 77 Spray Glue. Get 3M it's the best. Clamps. Buddy I prefer clamps for holding targets instead of staples. They're like a $1-2 at Harbor Freight. Sharpies of asst colors. Tools. Forgot once and my grip actually loosened up on my AR, thankfully someone in the class had a kit. Zero your guns ahead of time people. Wasting instructor and ATTENDEE class time for something so basic is not cool. The look @29:40 says it all. haha Boils down to there's no reason to "rough" it. Don't get bonus points. My buddy and I also brought a few gallons of water to wash our face and hands at the end of the day. It's amazing how good it feels to get in the car and drive home somewhat cleaner. We also brought Crocs to swap into for the drive home.

The notebook is nice if you have time to scribble the notes down. I've been in a couple shorter classes where we were rockin' and rollin' and I would have probably missed exercises if I stopped to take notes. I agree with you that you shouldnt have to provide a full detailed breakdown, but it might be nice if instructors could at least meet in the middle and give out a handout or something that has the high points so I could scribble notes in a more organized fashion to supplement the knowledge.

I would very much appreciate any range anywhere that would allow for food/drink on the property. Good golly. We're responsible people, aren't we? Doesn't everyone usually sweep up their spent casings and make sure the place is presentable before leaving? I'm betting it took one bad instance from a beginner to implore the 'no food/drink' thing everywhere. I'm not saying set a huge flimsy cup of soda in a precarious spot increasing the odds of knocking it over, but just have a designated area. (sigh) At least an accidental 'tradition' came about with my family that started with my folks and I kept it going. Shoot first. Lunch after. For some reason the hour at a range makes me hungry like after swimming for a bit. So I guess it's not all bad I'll have to tidy up then head to wherever the taste buds lead me.

Do you recommend wiping down your other gear with lead wipes as well? I’m kind of neurotic about it considering I have a young kid at home and I’m wondering if I’m being too anal. But I wipe down my gun, mags rig etc. especially after shooting suppressed.
