Bafang 510 ebike motor tested - how quiet and how fast is it?

It has a mechanical gear switch sensor on the gear cable, just take it off and the bike will run as normal. Denago just didn't quite trust your skills in riding the bike so they put a gear switch sensor for you 😊 better check for brake cut offs as well 😅

Thanks for the info! Denago just got back to me with that info. Very cool option. Yup, I wouldn't trust me either with my full turbo shifting. Brake motor cut-offs are the work of the devil for mtb. :)

@@EMTBReview 😀 as the target market for the bike is not necessarily experienced emtb riders Denago may have put the gear shift sensor just as a precausion as bafang has that as part in its mid drive motor lineup. But the gear switch sensor origins are in the Bafang motor kits for electrifying your acoustic bike.

​@@EMTBReviewYou can unplug the brake sensors as well and makes a huge difference. Allows for brake drag to maintain power and motor preload. You need to try M620 bike. Biktrix Monte Capro Ultra.

I have that motor and the above comments are correct. That bike has an aftermarket shift sensor installed, that's not part of the M510 itself. I bought one when I acquired the motor but I never installed it and never will, as I found that there's really no need for it, so no cutoffs whatsoever.

I have a bike with the Bafang M620, there is no way it is putting out 160 Nm.

The M620 is unfortunately suuuper heavy, my M620 bike is like 67 pounds which is not fun to ride on trails. With an upgraded controller though it's insane, 160 Nm of torque is totally believable and it can do almost 40 mph.

@@tedbellWRV it does. but as with all frame integrated motors frames will only allow all these crappy cylindrical cell batteries. stone age tech compared to what's available in the solid state NMC811 world. The M620 is very power hungry and stresses out most of these integrated batteries. I have a toseven DM01 (48V 30A, like the M620) and it rips like crazy, but you NEED a big battery with low DC internal resistance

Very fast on a graded uphill gravel road, but… from their online drivetrain specs - Crankset: Bafang alloy with 40 tooth narrow-wide style chainring. Cassette: Shimano CS-HG200, 9 speed, 11-34 teeth. More hill bike than mountain bike😃

shift sensor motor shutoff time should be about 0.1-0.2s, and should be settable with the BESST tool. Having a shift sensor is a huge benefit, but riding with it is different. no need to back off on the pedals, just hammer straight through the gears and you get incredibly good shifting, a bit like on a sequential gearbox. no crunching like on bosch, shimano and brose motors. the shift sensor, if tuned correctly is one of the best things you can possibly have on a middrive ebike.

Yes, we see it now. It is good for beginners and low-end drivetrains cause there's no learning curve and it saves drivetrains. However for advance mtb-ing we found it unusable at the stock setting. And we found no way to adjust it. Shimano drivetrains and the new Sram Eagle can handle shifts very well with some awareness from the rider. It enables climbing very steep and technical terrain with much success.

@@EMTBReview not for beginners, for fast, reliable and damage-free shifting under the most challenging conditions, where a motor without shift sensing would just crunch gears and eventually destroy the chain. of course the cutoff duration must be short enough to not lose momenum. on the M510, there is no dedicated shift sensor port, so the shift sensor is plugged into one of the brake cutoff ports, which by default have longer cutoff duration. That should be tuneable with the BESST tool I guess. will see that in a few days, because the all new M435 also has too long of a brake/shift cutoff. on my Toseven DM01, it's much shorter and truly makes for the fastest and cleanest shifting ever.

The one thing about faster e bike motors? Is that its still a mt bike, and when you eat it hard going faster things can break even more so. I can run my Shimano motor'd bike in Trail Mode and be going plenty fast for trailriding. 18mph up some steep hills can be done. But I pedal hard also. If your on trails where there can be hikers or horses? Good to keep that in mind. We dont want to be dicks out on trail right?

Most definitely!!! Climbing at Mach speeds is best done on remote, isolated fire roads. Descending, these bikes are a hair slower than mountain bikes so not a big issue there

@@EMTBReview A hiker getting hit by a 50+ lb E bike, well that could leave a mark. Not to mention I see a lot of + size riders on E bikes. Lot of weight going forward.....some trails have horses/hikers so common sense is good.................the whole idea of "faster motor E bike " can lead to a poor public perception of an E biker flying by.... they can go as fast as dirtbike on some trails.

I have a fat tire e-bike and the torque sensing Bafang M620 and it is LOUD - it's so blasted noisy. The power of the M620 is claimed at 160 Nm, but there is no way it is that powerful. I have the 750 watt rated M620, and it has no more power than my Bosch or Shimano powered bikes. It also sucks the battery like there is no tomorrow. The torque sensing on the M620 works fine for my use riding on the road or bike path. If your bike was quiet, I guarantee something is rigged. The bike manufacturer worked on the motor before sending to you (there are many videos on KZbin on disassembly and greasing the Bafangs to quiet them down). In comparison, I have e-bikes with Bosch Gen 2 CX (75Nm), Bosch Gen 3 Performance Line Speed (85 Nm), and Shimano E8000 (70 Nm) motors. I much prefer the Bosch - which I have tens of thousands of miles riding experience.

i don't know about m620,but i have bbshd which is supposed to be less powerful. I can bet my house your Bosch can't hold a candle to my bafang powerwise. I can pull you up and your bike on a steep uphill without even pedaling. Try that on your Bosch!!! You can't compare a powerful motor like Bafang to your kid's toy Bosch. That's like comparing Opel Corsa to a BMW M3 :)

Your m620 is hobbled at 750 watts and is not putting out 160nm so you can not judge as it not full power. My M 620 has become obnoxiously loud at 2000k and a regreasing will fix this. With 2 Bafang M620 riders and a Bosch rider guess who pushes their bike through crazy tech climbs. I am not power limited but traction limited.

@@tonym6633 Bafang claims the M620 puts out a "maximum" of 160 Nm of torque, but does not define what that is. They say the M620 comes with 750 or 1000 watt "rated" power output, but again no specifics on how the wattage is rated. Peak or continuous, who knows? Bafang makes no distinction in torque between the 750 and 1000 watt versions of the M620. All I know is the M620 is not that powerful and sucks batteries like crazy. It seems to be a very inefficient motor.

The M620 is loud because it has all steel gears. The M510 a nylon gear after the motor shaft pinion gear. That makes it 10 times more silent. In terms of power, 1st of all, torque is NOT power. power is the combination of torque and rpm. The M620 has a no load rpm of about 160, that is significantly higher than bosch or shimano. that means, the max power is achieved at around 120-130rpm at the chainring. most riders don't understand this and will run the motor inefficiently at the highest assist level. also, break-free torque is a matter of firmware tuning and, my toseven dm01 (1000W) as well as the BBS02 750w i've ridden for many years have much more torque and power than bosch, shimano etc.. obviously, bosch's torque sensing is very good and dynamic, bafang's might be a bit less refined, though I bet with proper tuning with the BESST tool you can get there and have the extra power and torque.

LOL the motor cut off during the gear shift have nothing to do with Bafang. This bike just sucks. You need to try M510 on a real eMTB. There's nothing to learn from testing motors on a budget hardtail.
