I laughed, I cried, I felt it intensely. Well done. Just what we need today. We Black people have feelings and this was heartfelt. I recommend that everyone should see it! I downloaded it and watched it while on an aircraft. I had to be careful as I reside in an Islamic country. I ABSOLUTELY loved it ❤❤❤

My mum (who's in her 70s) and I binged this a few days ago. Such an important story, great acting from all involved, we loved it. I know of at least two gay people in my 🇯🇲 family, one a cousin of my dad who would now be in his 80s (no-one spoke about it although I heard the p word a few times in hushed tones.. he never married) and a child of a relative now in his 20s who has come out to me but no-one else because of his super religious parents.. there is still so much shame and stigma around homosexuality in our black and brown communities 😞

One that investigates why the black lgbt community found it necessary to hold a totally separate and independent Black Pride march in London ever since 2005! The ending was rather disappointing. Barry looking embarrassed and uncomfortable around gay people at the party and him and his wife not ending on amicable terms. His wife forgiving him and accepting who he was would have been rather heartwarming.

Carmel has had a mostly unhappy 50 year marriage, thinking she wasn't enough, and ended up having an affair which she has been beating herself up about ever since (for about 20 years), trying to find redemption in the church. And on top of that she actually had a chance at a happy marriage but unfortunately picked the wrong man.... that is a hell of a lot to unpack! She can't forgive that betrayal overnight. It would take years.. I'd like to think she'd get there eventually, before she passed.. Barry being uncomfortable I think is accurate, he was brought up in a certain way and I'm sure he can't relate to the open behaviour of today's young gay people. He's lived a double life his entire life, that will also take years for him to process and unpack... basically, therapy and counselling all round!

@danielfrancis1476. Barry was never “out”. So, even being around openly gay people would be a little bit new for him and would require some adjusting/getting used to. Also, let us look on the bright side, his wife actually found a man who made her feel new, free and whole again.

I think it's sad that just about every role on tv written for black characters tend to be gay characters. I'm surprised and disappointed that such a great actor in LJ agreed to play the part. The fact is this is how we seem to be portrayed on tv most of the time. I hated it, but I should have known something was strange because of the 'prime time' slot the BBC allocated to it!

@rootsmacca. Your comment on just about “every role on tv written for black characters tend to be gay” is a bit of a stretch and an exaggeration. So tell me, what are your thoughts when we are portrayed as thieves, shoplifters, drug dealers, drug addicts, carjackers, baby daddies with multiple baby mamas, baby mamas with multiple baby daddies? Because there are those representations of us, but a truly meaningful love story between two men seems to surprise and disappoint you most. Mr. Loverman is a human story. It is about love. In fact, this, for me, is the first and most satisfying love story between two black men that I have been desperately and anxiously waiting to see. Oftentimes, the ones I see on tv “almost always” ( to borrow a phrase) have some messy gay “drama” going on only for shock value and a jump in tv viewership/ratings.

@@rm-54373 Thanks for your reply. You proved my point entirely. The roles are gay or plain negative. Same goes for 'Hollywood' too. The big burly strong black man dies first or is 'saved' by a skinny female or weaker white man. Same thing occurs in commercials in the UK where the majority of black persons are in mixed relationships. It's almost as though unless the white half of the couple is present, we can't be taken seriously. Same with the news, a 'positive' black feature will almost always be followed by a feature on crime which involves a black person. These observations are decades old. These things aren't new. What surprises me is the lack of sight from black people. Or just the plain acceptance of them.

I should also add that I HATED Steve McQueen's 'Lovers Rock' foolishness far more than 'Mr Loverman'. That was an absolute disgrace!

Really? What roles? I honestly haven't noticed this - but maybe I'm not watching the programmes you are 🤷🏽‍♀️ also I feel Lennie did a great job.. there are, and always have been, black gay people. My 🇯🇲 dad has a gay cousin (was never spoken about in the open, Dad sometimes said "oh, so-and-so is a poofter") who is prob in his 80s now and to his credit never trapped a woman in marriage. He came to the UK from JA as a teen and lived with his mother until she died maybe 15 years ago now.. but I really hope that somewhere he managed to find and know love because it makes me really sad to think he's just been alone his whole life because of his homophobic family and culture 😞
