Күн бұрын

In the final video celebrating the start of our whole food, plant-based lifestyle back in June 2018, we decided to host a BAKED POTATO THROWDOWN! Check out the blog post for more: bit.ly/KrockPot...
Since we kicked this new lifestyle off with two weeks of nothing but plain potatoes (inspired by Penn Jillette’s book Presto!), we wanted to go back and taste test a variety of plain potatoes to see how they stack up. We are gluttons for punishment! 😉
If you are interested in learning more about the two week potato diet, check out our Potato Diet Playlist: bit.ly/KrockPot...
For more about our general weight loss journey, check out our Weight Loss Playlist: bit.ly/KrockWeight
Check out our friend Martin The Great Potato Mage on KZbin: bit.ly/MTGPMyt
He started his diet with plain potatoes and has switched to a mostly whole food, plant-based diet as well. He posts daily vlog updates and is an all-around great guy. 🙂

Thanks for all your great tips in the videos and blog. I have a couple of comments. Why not just cook the potatoes in the microwave? Quick and easy. I also think the taste of the fingerling potatoes are more similar to their larger counterparts, for example the yellow fingerling potatoes taste like the larger Yukon gold. There is a higher ratio of skin to flesh but the taste to me is similar. Ranking 1. Yukon Gold 2. Purple 3 Red 4 Sweet 5 Russet I think it is interesting how different peoples palates are. Best recipe, smashed potato with hot salsa and smashed lightly steamed broccoli.

My favorite potatoes are Russets (baked), which, as a kid, I used to load with butter and sour cream, or later, at restaurants, blue cheese dressing. Now I use vegan butter, vegan sour cream/cream cheese, plus tons of scallions, cracked black pepper, a grind of Himalayan salt (I know, not on your list), and maybe chopped hot peppers. If you can make a blue cheese substitute, I'd be in heaven, but watching your videos is a close second :)
@kefirheals7383
@kefirheals7383 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with Jessica. Yukon Gold and the Red are my winners because they're moist. I love the Russet if I'm allowed to top it with something. Oh, and I remembered that cooking your potatoes first, then refrigerating to allow them to cool, then prepare them in your favorite way (air fried, baked, etc.), is supposedly better. Dr. McDougall said the starch in a cooled potato undergoes a chemical transformation called 'retrogradation', during which the sugar chains amylose and amylopectin rearrange into a crystalline structure, becoming what is called 'resistant starch' (literally meaning they resist digestion). Because you can't digest them, less starch enters your system (bloodstream), meaning less starch gets stored as body fat.

Loving your videos! My fave way of doing potatoes is to bake them as you did, but then refrigerate for a day and then cut into wedges and roast on a pan at 350 for about 15 minutes. Even with no oil, they get nice and crispy this way. The key is the refrigeration time.

Too many videos have an excess amount of loud, obnoxious commentary and music. I mean, I like loud music in my everyday life but I actually want to hear what’s being said. I haven't tried a big variety, but love my new found Yukon Gold potatoes. I have no patience for baking potatoes, and now hear that baking them isn't so great for you, anyway. My favorite way to eat them is to clean and trim them, cut them up in small ish pieces. Cook fast in a shallow pan with water, and when done, smash with a potato smasher... I use only cooking water to moisten them. I don't mash them completely. Mix in browned onion (or dried), garlic or g granules, and some red pepper flakes (go easy till you get used to them, and I like Italian herbs. Eat... Or add some cooked vegis of your choice and OMG. So good. I'm not cooking with salt, and don't miss it with the spices. One frozen vegi combo I like is the Fiesta Mix from Fred Meyer, (Kroger.) It has brocolli, carrots, red bell pepper, and a variety of beans. (from memory, so don't hold me to it,) but so good. Thanks for the personal reviews. Helps me to decide what to try next.

Great video; love the series. I was taught that different potatoes are best for different dishes. Idaho potatoes are best for baking in the oven; the classic baked potato. Russets (red potatoes) are considered the 'waxy' type and are often used where they are cut up to go into a dish like potato salad or potatoes au gratin, because they hold together better than the 'fluffy' Idahoes. Yukon Gold are newer to the table and kind of in-between the russet and Idaho. I've found they work well for roasting or for boiling, so now (unless I'm craving a classic baked) those are my go-to potato. Sweet potatoes are a whole different thing; they're delicious any way you make them. Cheers!

Plain sweet potatoes taste amazing when you cook them longer, until they're soft and tender and leaking juices everywhere. When cooked properly a plain sweet potato tastes like the best pumpkin pie you've ever had. I could tell when you were cutting them, and from the crunch they made when you chewed them, that these were undercooked. Given that they're way more healthy to eat than regular potatoes, not to mention potentially much more delicious, please try again! (I eat and enjoy regular potatoes too.. just to be clear)

I've found I really like the baby red potatoes, the ones you usually use for salads. Easy to eat and a nice creamy taste. And after a few days I swear I could sense some umami flavour in there. As for sweet potatoes, one book you read says you can have them and another say you absolutely can't. It's not a problem for me since I will never eat one because it is too much like a pumpkin, and I utterly despise pumpkin.

You two are so brave to eat more potatoes after that two weeks of them. Kudos to you! I happen to love Yukon Golds (have some baking right now!) and sweet potatoes the most. Can't really decide between the two. If I want a potato to hold all the goodies, I go with Russets. I like to roast red potatoes with other veggies (carrots, turnips, celery and onions). Speaking of salty tastes - Normally I make my own salsa because I haven't been able to find a decent flavored salsa that is salt free, but I ran out and plopped a tablespoon of my husband's regular store-bought salsa onto my potato yesterday. It's the first salt I've had in 3 weeks and it nearly choked the life out of me. Way too salty! And to think, just a few weeks ago, it wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest. Great vid as always, Krocks! Can't wait for more!

I like to peel and freeze them, then blend them up w/a little almond milk, cinnamon, and a dash of maple syrup to make potato nice cream. It's surprisingly good! :) Thanks for the fun video! @@kathleenbryce5170 yes there are an amazing amount of potatoes but it's not always easy to find them. Growing them in a bucket or bag is so easy though and doesn't take up much room, so get your seed potatoes from a catalogue and you can grow whatever varieties you fancy 💖

I do miss a bunch of my potatoes from back home... Germany doesn't seem to have as much variety in the supermarket for taters, but I also don't really want to just eat nothing but potatoes when I come to visit... 🤔🤔🤔 what a dilemma lol

@@MartintheGreatPotatoMage yes we are so lucky to have such a choice here, I love the early new potatoes especially our local Cornish ones, they are so tasty just on their own, maybe a tiny bit of salt 💖

I like how you focused on the small details of each potato. I like everything plain or with minimal seasonings simply because I'm not a good cook :) when I cook with a variety of spices or processes, it could turn out to be either good or bad but when I just eat it plain, it's always al least OK !!! plus I learned to appreciate the whole food more. They are already perfect as they are which a lot of people seem to forgot!!,,,,, But I wish I was a good cook though haha,,

I'm a decent cook. 🙂 I know some great chefs and they amaze me with their skill and understanding of simple flavors. I would say to just cook what you like to eat. Use spices or don't. At the end of the day it should just be something you enjoy eating. 😀 -Brian

Thanks for this 👍. Need to clear up the issue of the sweet potato - can it be part of the potatoes on Mari’s mini? Also, which potato is best in which kind of preparation, like, which one is best mushed, etc. Thank you 🙏

When I was a kid I used to put milk (could you non dairy milk) and green beans on my potatoes instead of gravy. (The green beans were cooked in milk. I have no idea why?)

Try to get Jersey Royal new potatoes, from the Channel Islands, off the south coast of England. (Not USA New Jersey). Also Scottish Ayrshire new potatoes. Communicating from Scotland, love your videos.

Do you two ever boil or steam your potatoes? I don't know much about WFPB and the best way to cook foods. I love to steam cook my potatoes in the Instant Pot and it makes them really creamy and soft.

Bake the sweet potato for 1 and 3/4 or 2 hours until the sugar in it Carmelises and the juices ooze out. The one you ate was half cooked. A fully baked sweet doesn’t need butter, gravy or anything else to make it wonderful. Better than any of those white potatoes!

I wish I didn't have so many actual opinions on potatoes. ha! But I did the potato diet for a while and I definitely have favorites! Russet is a solid contender if you are cheap, it's good if it can having something on it, or when making fries. The yellow is my overall favorite, but sometimes feels a bit too creamy for fries. The red is great for fries. And the sweet potato tastes way too sweet and the texture creeps me out. :)

Q, do you dig out the eyes and cut out the stems before you cook them? They contain cyanide especially if you eat the skins! I love Yukons for mashed and russets if I make a non fat mushroom gravy-(sauté mushrooms & onion add unflavored hemp milk and stir in some miso) 🌝
