A lot of people underestimate the selling point of solid customer service. I bought a Ruger revolver and realized it had factory blemishes after getting it home. I sent it in, and Ruger completely replaced the pistol. With high wear and tear items like this, it's nice to know Bakflip stands behind their product no questions asked. Excellent review. Made me feel I made a good decision of my recent purchase of an Bakflip MX4 for my Colorado. Topper World, Slidell, La had a good showroom selection of most popular models and recommended this one over the soft tops. Paid around $1100 installed. Two weeks now and after a couple of high volume drive thru car washes no leaks. Dust from dusty roads gets in but a leaf blower clears that out. Weather strips around tailgate should stop most of that. So far, highly recommend.

Excellent review. I had the MX4 on a previous truck and was impressed with its performance but sold it and replaced it with a topper so that I could fit a generator in the bed (generator too tall for tonneau cover). I got rid of my generator now (new truck has generator built in) and am going back to another MX4 on my new truck to save some weight and a couple thousand dollars. I used some some spray-can bedliner to repair scratches on old one before I sold it and that worked ok, but I had to spray all panels so they matched.

This is with out a doubt one of the most honest, complete reviews I have seen, with detailed pro's and con's. I have it down to this and the Peragon cover for my Tundra. The Peragon wont take as much weight as the BAKFlip, but right now I have a 4 panel soft one by Rugged Cover, and have not walked on it, or needed to do so. But your review is great

I had a backflip on a 2005 F150. It was on it when I got it. I really liked it and was always impressed with how dry and dust free it kept everything. I sold the truck and let it go with it. I don’t think I realized how valuable it was. Another great video!!

Great video. My first back flip lasted 8 years but I only open it maybe once a week if that. I’ve also kept it clean and the whole thing Armoraled weekly. My second is just over a year old and is good as new. My new one is same as yours. They fixed many of the shortcomings from the first model.

I had the BAK X-2 Rollup cover for 4 years on my 2013 f350. After it got torn up by ice and sun here in Colorado, I bought another. This time the X-4. It lasted about 4 years as well. Called BAK, and they sent me a replacement cover (without the rails since they were fine), and the replacement did well until I sold the truck this year. Overall, I had about $2000 invested in bed covers over a ten-year period. Not bad a all. Nothing will last forever, especially if you use them a lot. Overall, my experience was good and their customer service is solid. Just got a new F250, and I’m moving onto the MX4without hesitation. Thanks for the review!

Thanks for the review. I had one put on my 2012F150 6.7 box yesterday. They did what you mentioned and overtightened the latch screws. One was loose so I just put some blue lock tight on it. I figured I could always drill new smaller holes later if it came to that point. I took off my Truxedo roll up and the main reason was like you. Three times I drove across Wyoming and my Velcro Truxedo did not stay fastened. I had to rig it tight with gorilla tape to hold it tight. I like this cover because it is much heavier. Mine will sit in the garage and get babied or used locally. But I haul quite often. Just won’t be hard on it.

I just purchased the Bakflip from 4WP store for my 2021 Ram Quad cab with 6.5 ft bed. Did an extensive research on different bed covers and decided to go with the Bakflip, very easy to install and looks great. Taking it on a long trip so we'll see how it holds up.

Way late in the game here but I’ll share my 7 years experience with this exact cover. First, I plan to buy another one for my new truck so I liked it very much. Only grips I had was…cover itself was hail damaged while the truck wasn’t meant the material was too soft to withstand what the truck withstood. Second, too easy to stick a coat hanger between the tailgate top and the cover to release the cover and open it. Needs slight redesign to overcome that.

I was recommended the bakflip on my 2014 Ford F-150 had it for about 5.5 years. Can’t remember the model. But was recommended by my Ford dealer. They are solid. My new truck doesn’t have one so will have to get another one. Looking at the MX4. With my old one I lost one of those seals. To keep from rubbing. Went to my local body shop and picked some. I did lose the the screw cap that supports the top to the cab Also the plastic pieces that stow the rods broke so went and found some metal wire clips same shape and swapped them for those.

There is one panel without a latch and it could be pryed up some but the other latches should keep it down. That's what keeps it down in high wind running interstate speeds but it does move some. I think the winds were 45mph from the side and i was running around 75 plus mph when i saw it moving but that's been a while ago

Hey man, cool cover, I would look into an RDS filler neck valve, $50 it’s an automatic valve for transfer tanks and is DOT approved for continuous filling of the transfer tanks! I got one on my 99’ and works GREAT I never had to stop for 1,100 miles and the transfer tank keeps filling my stock tank!!! RDS auxiliary tank neck filler adapter!!!

I have the RDS filler neck adapter but the manual valve is on the side of the tank. I turn it on around 1/4 tank and it drains in but it leaks out of the vent on the stock tank if i don't shut it off when it gets full

Buddy, my personal opinion.i wouldn't trade my 2500 for a 3500. From what I'm seeing the most important thing is not to go over 26k. I can pull a heavier trailer with my 2500 without going over than i could with a dually because the truck is heavier. That's my understanding and my opinion. I know i got weighed in Arizona last week with a 3 axle toy hauler and i weighed 24900 and they sold me my permit and i went on my way. If I'd had a lwb 3500 I'd have been over 26k and had to bought ifta permit.

All but one panel latches. From the back, the first one latches the second doesn't then the rest latch individually. This video is older and I'm still using cover today. I would buy another in a heartbeat. As soon as i have a chance in going to make a more updated video

hello good video, I chose the Gator brand and it (sweats) a lot. Open it up when the sun hits it and all underneath the cover is wet. It just drips off. Do you have that problem? And Gater customer service just refers me to the manufacture. I am considering the Bak brand now. thanks

When the MX4 cover is fully folded back and leaning up against the back of the cab, what is the distance / clearance from the inside of the top of the bulkhead to the rear edge of the opened cover? I have a combo transfer tank with a toolbox on top in my '22 Silverado 1500. I know that the fully opened cover eats up enough distance that I wouldn't be able to fully open the toolbox lid. But, depending on how far rearward the fully opened edge of the MX4 sits, I might still be able to open the lid enough to make the toolbox useful. My second issue might be the height clearance for the top of the fuel pump (which sits proud of the top of the toolbox). Right now, the overall height is just about even with the bed rail. If the underside of the tonneau cover itself (not the side rails or hardware, but the inner field of the cover) falls below the bed rail and uses up any of the clearance, I might have a problem. However, it looks like the underside of the cover inner field might actually be slightly above the height of the bed rail. Which would give me a little more "breathing room." But, can you confirm what the actual clearance would be from bed bottom to underside of the inside field of a cover panel? My final question is, what kind of issue might there be with the trapping in the closed cover of the inevitable smell of diesel fuel? No matter how carefully I fill the tank and pump fuel, there is the inevitable residue somewhere.

I spill some fuel too so i understand the concern for that but I've never noticed any smell but i do haul a lot of fifth wheels so it gets aired out often. I'll take some measurements when i get back to truck

5 1/2 inches from inside of bulkhead to edge of folded up cover against back glass. 20&3/4 inches from bed to bottom of cover.19&1/2 from bed to the latch on bottom of cover. Hope this helps

@@CFarmer Apologies for my delayed acknowledgement, but thanks for your reply. It was very helpful. It confirms that I'm down to a game of inches, or an inch. I've got 22-1/4" from the high point (rib) of the bed to the top of the side rail. The top of the pump nozzle protrudes above the rail by ~3/8". It appears that the tonneau panel is ~1/2" thick, which would get my clearance to the same 20-3/4" that you have. Somehow I need to gain an inch (pump nozzle protrusion plus cover thickness). Perhaps the nozzle can be somehow repositioned. Or, I wonder if I could install a 1" to 1-1/2" thick neoprene gasket to the top of the rails, bulkhead top, and tailgate top to raise the entire tonneau by that much. What do you think?

I had never looked for the weight but I looked mine up on their website and they claim 71lbs.that sounds about right to me. I did install it myself and it was heavy but very manageable. Hope this helps

Maybe I’m not being realistic but I just bought one for 8’ bed and it cost $1,200 and I think if it looks like this in 12 months it won’t last 5 years before they will have to do full replacement. Mine is 20 days old and already first pull cord latch keeps getting stuck on one side not allowing both latches to unlock.

Hey Philip, On my particular truck it gets dusty around the tailgate if I'm in dusty environments. I think the cover itself would do really good keeping dust out but my tailgate isn't sealed at all. I wish i had a better answer but i haven't spent a whole lot of time in dusty places and mine is open to haul fifth wheels regularly so the rain keeps it washed out.

In my experience 2500 is ok, with cdl and a lighter empty weight i can pull heavier loads than a 3500 and stay under 26k. A lwb will ride better and a dually is more stable but 2 years and 265k miles pulling the units I've pulled it seems to do an excellent job with way less in repairs than i ever expected (knock on wood). If i had to buy another truck today and sign a 5 year contract to keep doing this work I'd buy the exact same truck i have now all over again

When its all said and done I might go back to GM again haha. My 5th wheel is 16k so the DRW just feels better for me.

I've always been a gm guy but i see guys with all brands that are beating and neglecting trucks that just keep going and giving no issues then i know guys who are on top of maintenance and baby their trucks and having issues....i honestly believe it's luck of the draw on any of them. I have one of the original ones. Bad design. The new fixed the issue with having to lift the end piece to close the tailgate. However, lots of other design flaws. 1. The piece to hold it up by the window. One of the nuts fell out...try and find one to fit it. The bar falls off the cheap plastic hook. The bar unscrews constantly. 2. The cross bars are connected cheaply. My middle one (there to keep theft out) fell off 2x. Finally left it off. 3. The end cross bar fell off and the truck shop put back on with a couple of extra screws. I had to add more. The strap to open is held in place with a cheap plastic piece that has split on one end and constantly pulls out of the groves. 4. The new ones have the butt piece so you can close the tailgate without having to pull the end up. The original one can be accessed with a coat hanger and open when the tailgate is closed. The main reason is the wire goes tight on one end and stays loose on the other. Not a good design. I have a friend that has the new flat end one but he does not want me to test opening with a coat hanger. 5. The unit shifts and I am constantly having to move the right side to get the rubber, now tearing on the end piece to cover the tailgate. Get a lot of water in the bed even in the middle. Why did the design not include a wide protective edge to keep out water. 5. Bad with hail...the top part is now loose from the inside parts due to the hail impact. I have not replaced it as I am still looking at other covers. Hate the ones that put the material inside as you lose space. Hate the poor designed ones that protect from water and tip up as you can't use the full bed for large items. A friend got one with full lift capability and uses for his business. So, the original Bakflip is crap...sort of works but knowing what I have discovered in the last 3 years with it...would spend a lot more time finding a good cover that hail won't damage and holds up. Looked good but cheaply put together. BM

I enjoy your videos! Have a Question about the rear length mudflap UltraGuard. Looking to buy a Chevy 2500 and noticed the exhaust tail pipe sticks straight out of the rear. How did you overcome that with the UltraGuard in the way? Thanks

Can you drive with the cover not closed all the way? Like with the first or second sections left open?

You could but the straps will only secure it if it's folded all the way to the cab (but not standing up) . I have hauled a few things and let it rest against what i was hauling and it worked ok.
