Ah well, I am afraid if people start losing the basic fresh cooking skills and rely on packet crap then the likes of Iceland and Aldi will get bolder with their pricing. Why not strike a blow for the consumer and do a comparison Fresh v Convenience test. Great vids.

In fairness, people need to be taught cookery at school or at home, plus the reasons why it's a valuable skill. The energy prices we face mean that home cooking is no longer an easy choice for many. Time pressures are also a factor, in families where both parents, or a single parent, work. The likes of Iceland and Aldi know all this and are eager to take advantage.

I've recently been converted to the iceland takeaway curries, you buy 3 and they're £2 each, some of them are really good. What I tend to do is cook them, then near the end add about 1/3rd of a pack of that quick cook rice and then serve. I decided to try their "luxury" range at 3 curries for £10 and I have to say they are even better, the chicken tikka saag one and extra spicy balti are amazing IMHO.

The internet says: Triphosphate is a preservative for seafood, meats, poultry, and animal feeds. It is common in food production as E number E451. In foods, it is used as an emulsifier and to retain moisture. Many governments regulate the quantities allowed in foods, as it can substantially increase the sale weight of seafood in particular.

Make your own "spice mix" 1Tsp salt, 1 Tsp white pepper and 1/2 Tsp five spice. Sprinkle it over 66 chicken nuggets (924grams for £3.50 at Iceland). You can always fry off a few onions and peppers if you want to add them and up the amount of "Spice mix" if it's not enough for your taste.

This is something you can do easily yourself at home and get much better results. All that seasoning is Garlic powder, salt and white pepper. A really basic version would be to crumb some chopped chicken breast. Fry those and put aside. The in another pan heat up some oil, chuck in a small amount of onions and chilli and cook for a minute. Add the chicken and combine with onions and then slowly add your salt and pepper mixture (1tsp garlic powder, quarter tsp of salt and white pepper. Authentic way would be to marinade the chicken beforehand but you'd need oyster sauce, light soy, sesame oil and some cornstarch.

Me and my missus always do and rotate the "tin"cupboard now and again, happy days eh!! that includes everything.....apart from the spice rack and I use it now and again, almost all the spices were out of date, aaaarrrrrrggggggh. I think you could knock up a nice batter dice a couple of fillets cut up some peppers onions and tomato add your own chinese spice, and it would be cheaper and nicer, but the packaging is going lower each month, then they bring out the "new and bigger" with the price higher, and it feed 2 marketing at its worst. You need to remember there's easily a whole chicken breast diced, then the veg, the batter and processing of that... the seasoning. Then there's the plastic the cardboard, the ink to print the packaging, the transport, then paying staff to stack it on the shelves... it all needs factoring in, then they have a minimum % profit to make.

Just shows the contempt retailers have for their customers sadly. They know people mostly don't have the time to cook meals from scratch so they think they can get away with stuff like tweaking the recipe or weight and calling it new. Anyone else notice that ready meals started to make an appearance in the supermarkets right around the time cookery was removed from the curriculum? Labour had a proposal to reintroduce it in 2008 over concerns about childhood obesity but the coalition government from 2010 kicked it into the long grass.

I have to be careful how i word this but Iceland frozen meals have gone right downhill. I used to like the Biryani Chicken, but I noticed a difference in the meat/chicken. They're telling lies about the content (volume), and the quality. I've also found hairs in the food the last 2 times, so I don't buy anything like that from there anymore. The chicken is a concoction of TVP and chicken offal etc. But they don't tell the consumer. Most of their meals are made in Thailand and have little to no regulations. Just remember, buying cheap nowadays you're buying poison.

Hi Gareth, it happens when an product contract ends with an existing supplier. Aldi then go off and put the same or a similar product out to tender to other contract food manufacturers. This doesn't always happen quickly and if the product has been off the shelf for a while then it comes back as 'I'm New!' Usually the product comes back at either an increased price or in a smaller serving. Very deceptive.

8 bits seems to be the norm in most ready meals whatever the meat, at least at the moment, but I suspect that will lower as time goes on. Maybe even dropping to as low as 5 or the pieces becoming smaller. It doesn't look much of a meal for £2.50. Would need a bag of rice. The few spices will of course enhance it. Diet wise northerners are brought up on pies, chips mash and mushy peas is about as far as we get with veg so when the need rises to change the diet a little its not easy 🤣.
