Band Maid. A true Full House of Aces and Queens. Very few bands can muster as much talent on their instruments as MISA, Kanami and Akane. And on the other hand Miku and Saiki have managed to put the icing on top of this prog-metal-hard-pop-funk rock cake with their voices. What else to say. This is a miracle band, one of which doesn´t comes out often. I'll bet something: Unseen World is STILL not their best masterpiece.

That last comment you made about every member getting their time to shine, has mostly to do with Kanami. By the very nature of their position in rock bands, L guitarist often tend to be ‘possessive’ of their spotlight esp. when they’re the main songwriter. Kanami is also the arranger on top of that but in pretty much every song she tries to give everyone a time to standout. She doesn’t even take the credit officially & lists it as Band Maid. In pretty much all their interviews, everytime Kanami is brought up they often talk about her pushing them to work harder to improve by giving them harder assignments, etc. It’s esp. the case with Miku and Akane. Despite Kanami’s love for the spotlight herself, evident by how many solos they have, she manages to always place the song and the group first. They’re honestly fortunate to have such a genius workaholic at the core, without the arrogance and attention seeking traits that often comes with it. Btw I’m not saying Kanami is the only reason behind their success. But she’s definitely the main one coz in any work group the one who has the most responsibilities can often make or break it, depending on how well they manage the overall balance of the work distribution and how much are they able to make each one feel appreciated/rewarded at the same time. In BM’s case, she knows how to push them to their limits but also gives them free reign of their spotlight. This balance of mutual benefits is essential for any work group to function efficiently and remain productive in the long run And Kanami knows this principle well. Though it’s not surprising, considering she is an economics and management graduate.

Band-Maid and Nightwish stand above the crowd, easily the two best bands founded since 1975. The measure of their greatness is that they have each created an entire new genre of music. You can't say that of many bands, maybe the Beatles, Cream, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, followed by a 30-year gap. And it looks like Nightwish maybe headed for retirement, so it's on Band-Maid to reinvent rock. So grateful to know about them.

When Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin caught a BAND-MAID concert live in Tokyo he was so impressed with Akane's drumming he wanted a picture with her, and he said she was one of the best drummers he had ever seen. When Akane heard Jimmy Page was asking for her after the concert she, as you would, assumed it was a prank. He said she was "like a reincarnation of John Bonham"

There is a different version of this album called “完全生産限定盤” (Complete Limited Edition) and it has two disks with the different order as follows; Disk:1 AFTER LIFE WHY WHY WHY YOUTH (This song is only in this edition) サヨナキドリ(Sayonakidori) CHEMICAL REACTION MANNERS I STILL SEEK REVENGE. Disk:2 GIOVANNI H-G-K MANNERS BLACK HOLE 本懐(Honkai) NO GOD WARNING! Also pointed out, in the interview of BAND-MAID they named disk1 as “Original Point Regression” and disk2 as Current Point Evolution”. “Manners” are in both disks but they regard the song as the bridge between two disks or two styles... This might be fitted for your preference.

In reaction to what you said about very few writers being able to write like this, Kanami's style of writing appears to be polyphonic, which comes out a lot more vocally in the tracks on this album. Only other living composer of non-classical music who's doing this that i'm aware of is Yoko Kanno. Prince would be another example. every instrument has their own "melody", a part sonically different and unique to the others but when put together creates something completely new. Personally my first introduction to this concept was the "40 part motet", Spem in Alium by Tallis (tons of vids of it on youtube) which was played to my music class as an example of the method some 25yrs ago. so far every artist, or composer, who's used this method has always stood out for me. Check out some of Yoko Kanno's work (she does a lot of anime soundtracks), and some of the earlier stuff by Prince and listen to how each part is off in its own little world, contributing to this massive larger whole that is the piece, and see how Band-Maid are also doing a similar thing.

This album is actually insane. To listen to all of the craziness they've done on this album...and then to top it off with this song...and then with the way this song ends...they all done lost their dang mind. But somehow still created possibly the best album i've ever heard. And my goodness, this album has shown that Akane is an absolute nut...of course I mean all this in the best way possible, but holy cow...Akane just slayed every song on this album. They all did. But Akane, for me at least, was the one who shined the most. I cannot wait to hear them perform these songs live...I might not make it through that concert, tbh.

Curiously, the 2-disc special edition of unseen World, runs a differernt track order: Disc 1 ( 'Roots') goes: After Life....Why Why why....Youth ( bonus track) ....Sayanakidori.... Chemical reaction.... Manners....I Still Seek Revenge And disc 2 ( 'Progress') runs: Giovanni....H-G-K....Manners ( again) ....Black Hole... Honkai....No god.....Warning. It certainly alters the balance of the whole thing. - But since I had the download version before the Special edition on pysical media, I kinda got used to the flow of the download order, and marginally prefer it. There is also a Blue-ray featuring Afterlife, No God, Giovanni and Without Holding back, which are all instrumentals, with the camera solely on Miku, MISA, Akane and Kanami and then all together as a group - So 5 for each track. Sadly Saiki isn't present, even sitting it out on the sidelines, but after her performance on the album, the Queen of Miads deserves a break. - But it'd be nice to see her even jsut enjoying the others as they play, maybe with a thumbs-up or gentle applause at the end. Much love to all the ladies and to you, Champ. You all have certainly lit up the start of 2021!

I think this is one of those albums where you can feel all the competition jawless and seriously thinking to each other "Now what?... let's go pop instead?" ... This is a very special band, it's all about the music. I can imagine them calling each other during these pandemic days sharing ideas for this and that song. I dunno, maybe they had all this time without the "normal schedule" of interviews, appearances, concerts and what not and had a big chunk of time at their disposal that they could use to just sit back and relax but instead they used it to "level up" and do anything/everything they wanted applying each new abilities or technical upgrades. "Unseen World" is a perfect name for the album. I am really anxious to watch the live stream next 11th this month and see some of these songs played... I'm guessing we will see MISA, Miku, Saiki and Kanami doing what they do and a big doodle in the back that is Akane moving at light speed... and maybe taking a little break, a little rest playing "Rinne" or "Screaming" ... I'll be in a pool of drool... Loved these reactions from top to bottom. Cheers!

Man Black Hole is such a banger. It also has one of my favorite kinds of guitar riffs. At the bridge around 1:49 in the song (4:16 in this video) we have what I call "the metalcore riff", though it's been used by At The Gates and even Death, but what it is is a palm muted bass note with unmuted higher notes being played between the chugged bass notes. Hear it all the time in Metalcore from Miss May I to As I Lay Dying, and especially a lot in early Asking Alexandria. For whatever reason I always find that kind of riff just sounds sick. No exception here.

Loved your overall reaction to the whole album. You're insights, analysis, your shock and awe did justice to this masterpiece. My only complaint is, why wasn't it 24 songs? Another year waiting for what follows this will be the longest year ever. I have no doubt that the next one will be even better (is that even possible?). Kanami is a genius and I hope she has the time to fully develop her already exceptional skills even further. With the pandemic still raging around the world, it still looks like live concerts are at least another year away and this continued break will also help them continue to grow stronger.

@@ronjohnson2193 If this next year is another year of canceled live performances, I think that Kanami will have more time to develop her ideas and both MISA and Saiki have stated in recent interviews that they would like to get more involved in composing. I think that with the guiding hand of Kanami that could turn out to be something unexpected and maybe adding more layers to their songs. Kanami did state that this past year she became a riff-making machine and there's only 13 new songs, so she probably has a lot of ideas tucked away on her hard drive, just waiting to escape.

@@ronjohnson2193 I am hoping this album sells well enough that they (and the label) feel comfortable going in a sort of Floyd or Rush-like direction. Less concern with radio friendly song length and let them stretch out musically. Have to have some singles but mix them with some longer songs with longer solos, maybe with a theme connecting some songs to stretch Miku's writing. I feel our sensitivity to music is similar but your perception and how you deliver analysis always make me admirative ! Thanks for uploading all those videos. Ps: I miss your funny editing in early Band-Maid videos though.

I think Kanami is accidentally exploring "musical space", as a side-effect of having to give Akane an F'n breather--regularly! hahaha...But, seriously, "musical space" is the direction they have to move in...Otherwise, speed-demon Kanami might just burn out the band!

They wrote and recorded this album in a few months. They released Conqueror in December 2019. They were gearing up for a world tour and a Japanese tour to promote it. They were booked solid for like the rest of 2020 and I think into the beginning of 2021. Then the pandemic happened and they canceled everything. So everything gets canceled in April. So between at least April and at most December, they write and record a whole-ass album. That’s bananas. They already released an album that they didn’t even get to promote. And they were like, “I’m bored. Let’s make a new album.” And this was that album! Who the fuck are these girls?! They’re not human!

Regarding the track listing, I much prefer the order of the 2CD limited edition (Manners is so good it had to be on there twice!😁). I think this flows better. After Life Why Why Why Youth Sayonakidori Chemical Reaction Manners I Still Seek Revenge Giovanni H-G-K Manners Black Hole Honkai No God Warning! Admittedly It's a bit weird having Warning! last but it somehow works for me. 🙂
