The Jedi Maids...helping to save Rock one riff at a time. Courtesy of Obi-wan Kanami, of course. Or is it, Darth Mincho? Now that she's gone over to the dark side!? 🤣 And her former padawan, Obi-wan Kobato, representing the light side, and stalwartly providing balance to the Rock (force). Geez, I've been watching too much old Star Wars 🤦♂😆

The ways Miku and Saiki voices melt together so well is just one more miracle of chance. I mean c'mon this foursome were a great band already , but decide we need another singer and of course they find just the best vocalist for this band possible , and her and Miku of course blend like butter. Of course.

If there's soloing going on, it's Kanami nearly 100% of the time. You can also tell them apart by their guitars. Miku = Zemaitis. Kanami = PRS.

These sort of orchestral intros to some of their songs are pure magic by Kanami. Love them so much and I'd love her to make a Prog album. I still believe that when Kanami gets an idea for a song, she hears the different part in her head all together.
@interstellardave2 ай бұрын
I, too want a real proper prog album by them. At this point you probably could call them a prog band based on the sophistication of their arrangements and the abundance of very proggy elements in many newer songs. But I’d like to see them stretch out a bit a do something 10-15 minutes long. They pack a lot in 3 1/2 minutes but it’s a limitation nonetheless. BTW, the instrumental segment in this song could be inserted into the album “Relayer” (1974) by Yes, and you’d think it was always there.

For me as a long time Madiac I love every version of every song simply because they are all done to perfection. But as far as preference it all depends on my mood. The Maids can lift you up when you are down, or make you feel even better when things are great.

This acoustic version of "Catharsis" is different from the rock version of the song. Both are great, but the acoustic version is so charming with its jazz-like feel. The laid-back ambiance is perfect for the Christmas season (this was Band-Maid's Christmas Okyu-ji in December 2022). I always love that little acoustic romp during the song. It adds a sense of warmth to the song.

Typically, Kanami composes everything. She starts with a riff or a melody and builds around it. Sometimes the girls will give her ideas to expand on. When the piece is fleshed out, she first gives it to Misa to write out the bass line. Then she works on the drums, usually giving several of different difficulties for Akane to decide on and do her thing with it. Then she goes to the keyboard and works out the vocals for Miku and Saiki. Miku is the main lyrist and puts words to music on how it makes her feel. Saiki helps when asked, especially for love songs or sometimes writes all the lyrics on some song. Lastly, she writes the rhythm guitar part. In the end, everyone contributes in most every song. but Kanami has the final say.

Odds are it's Miku who wrote the words. Saiki did write the lyrics to 'Hate?' however. Sure wouldn't want to be the 'special person' she's singing about in that song. Solos are always Kanami. She might give Miku a simple lead part, but even that's rare.

Great reaction and I love both versions and which one is better depends on how I'm feeling when I listen to it. Others have pointed out Kanami's composing method, but she does include all in the process. From what I've read in interviews they do not jam in a studio to write the songs and it appears they all do they parts and send the files to Kanami and she puts it all together (they all use the same software and hardware - DAV). I think the only ones that get together is Saiki and Miku to work out the lyrics (always done after the song is finished). Thanks for continuing to react to Band-Maid.

I actually prefer the acoustic version. The more relaxed pace seems (to me, anyway) to better fit the sentiment of the lyrics. It also makes the guitar break more impactful and Saiki gets to show more nuance and playfulness in her vocal. Not going to complain about the electric version, though. ;)

I'm not a musician and definitely not a drummer but Akane's drum pattern sounds very unusual/unique to me in the first part of the song, of course she changes it as the song develops. Is she playing lots of ghost notes to make it sound like that or am I talking rubbish, which is probably the likely explanation

Preferred version? I don't have one, I enjoy being able to choose between three of them: acoustic (more intimate atmosphere), live (more energetic) and studio (much richer sound and details). Try Awkward (live), Akasimahen studio / acustic, 3 different songs same theme, all great In general, I have a small problem with the studio versions of BM, they sound a bit "dry" to me, as if they get their final shape, energy, as if they come alive only then... although then they might lose some subtle detail because they don't have the freedom of studio recording

I sort of like that difference between Saiki-san's lyrics and Miku-chan's lyrics. Saiki-san writes in the modern way, no poetic license whatsoever. Whereas Miku-chan will use similes, metaphors, alliteration, etc... all the usual things that a poem uses.
@etoineschrdlu93822 ай бұрын
Which version is better? It's like picking your favorite child: you love them all, but each of them shines above the others at different times. As for their songwriting, *polskabob359* has the basics down, but Kanami will experiment with new ways of generating song ideas. Sometimes she'll ask each band member to write a chorus and then attempt to bridge them together. I heard that to write "Manners" they listened to hit songs and tried to quantify features that made those songs hits and then tried to incorporate those features into a song. Afterward, Kanami pledged to stop listening to other bands! All I can say is that Band-Maid is constantly trying out new ideas. This is why so many Band-Maid songs seem to come out of left field and elicit a "I was not expecting that." response. It helps that they do not seem to be beholden to an AR manager at Pony Canyon, at least not now. They very much self-mange.
