This video was SOOOO helpful for me!! My yorkie has an aversion to lying on his side. I would sometimes feel like a failure as a trainier when he did not follow the lure because training videos on other sites made it look so easy. Ever since I saw THIS video, I have been able to relax and make more progress on getting him to lay on his side. So, thank you so much!! 👍👍

I've been using your techniques and I'm proud to say she's becoming the most well trained pup I've ever had! She's even done some of the beginning steps of scent training successfully 😊. Your comment cracked me up--in any event, even if your stinker doesn't do it perfectly, it sounds like you're having fun, which is probably the primary goal with a "non-neccessary" "command" (just looking at this now to teach my German Shepherd, I may have the same level of success as you--we'll see, lol. As long as we're having fun!! It's the recall, sits, downs, heels, place, etc. that are more important to get 100%--this is "gravy" and fun, lol). PS: Nate recently posted about a "scent box", I'm really stoked to yet that, will be very fun for my dog & a good "relationship builder" exercise. Unless we're doing hardcore competitional obedience, I think it's sometimes valuable to recognize the "non-negotiable" behavioral training & commands vs. the fun things that are nice to have in the obedience arsenal, but don't necessarily need to be perfect😁

No one did tutorials better than you. Now you added to another level illustrating with 4 dogs. I guess I will expect 4 versions from now on. 😀 Spock is the most beautiful dog. Can’t wait to see him full grown. My GSD only does it if he is in the down position. If I ask him while he is standing, he will be like ‘what are you saying’. Is it just more repetitions using lure while he is standing?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Alicia! I appreciate that. Yes, I start teaching this with the pup in the down. Once they know that physical cue, we can show the pup how to do the command in the sit and stand position. It'll just take more repetitions, as you suspected. :)

@@randomamerican471 let's train together, lol. Wish you lived in my neighborhood, my German Shepherd has all the "basics", but we're trying to learn more. My stinker became slowly increasingly reactive to dogs & prey animals on walks. Long story, but I had to go back to HARDCORE basic obedience. Now we hear constant comments on how well behaved my boy is (but there's a Jekyll & Hyde hiding under the surface when his drives are triggered--I'm working on management of those drives with fairly good success). No one else in the neighborhood seems to put thought or time into training. Would be fun to train & chat with others. Did you see Nate's recent video about setting up a scent box? That looks super awesome, excited to try that, I KNOW my dog will LOVE that, lol!!

Yes, you can try a shaping box or go back to just the physical cue and add a new command once the sit is the way you like it. Some people will use slight leash pressure and use their hands to tuck the dog's butt into position. So they have sharper-looking sit, instead of the rocking sit.

a guy in my neighborhood has a malinois that he never trained anything more than "sit" and he complains that the dog is constantly barking and chewing. i have told him that when my doberman pup gets older i'd love to help train his dog but he ignores me when i talk about it. why do people get such intelligent, high-energy dogs when they have no intention of fulfilling their needs? I love how intelligent my doberman is, but he doesn't have anywhere near the raw drive that this malinois has. i'm curious what i could teach this enthusiastic bundle of energy in just a few days lol intelligence and drive are vastly different
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. I think it's mostly because people see a cool dog in a movie (Malinois in John Wick 3), and they believe if they buy one, it'll be just as trained and responsive to commands as the one in the movie is. This is what happened to the Dalmatians, and it's been coined as the 101 Dalmatians syndromes. Research has shown that when Hollywood highlights a specific dog breed, it increases the breed's popularity for ten years or more. Then because of these uneducated people countless beautiful and amazing dogs end up in the shelters.

They usually stop when they are done teething at 6 months of age. If the puppy enjoys biting, then You may need to use a correction to stop the behavior. Correcting the behavior with a quick leash pop. However, you should keep this in mind when adding corrections: Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this. One; make sure to prevent the dog from being able to practice the undesired behavior. The second option is to use a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So in the end, the motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior. If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept. It's important to remember that every dog has their bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether. This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act. In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear. Leash pop: This is when you make a snapping motion with the dog’s leash to engage the training-collar to give the dog a correction (a positive-punishment). I hope this helps!
