Күн бұрын

Gale Banks explains how we will shove a massive supercharged 7-liter Duramax L5P diesel engine into LokJaw, our rusty '66 Chevy 3/4-ton pickup. He's joined by Fabrication Engineer Erik Reider, Mechanical Engineer Joshua Chen, Prototype Engineer Erik Reider, and Brand Manager Jay Tilles. Gale details the Whipple 3.8L Gen-5 supercharger and blower drive, Banks' marine-inspired liquid-coupled charge-air cooler, Ram-Air intake system, new cast L5P exhaust manifolds, 2020 L5P oil cooler, Banks Fluidamper, dry-sump system, and ATS-modified Allison transmission.

I would like to see a supercharged twin turbo as long as the turbos can be place properly. I dont like turbos that eat up all your engine bay space. A supercharged engine with twin turbos integrated into the frame/sheet metal like they do on the corvette would be awesome and a killer setup.

It is pretty amazing that they are this open. He could develop it and stick it in the page of a magazine and hope people buy it. But showing everyone the ins and outs really builds trust in the company. These are very educational videos and an advertisement to their engineering and quality that I think people defiantly appreciate. I have only bought one of their products but I was a happy customer. If only every young person started with Banks. Sadly, many start off at "Joe's house of crap fab and money grab". If you do quality work and keep promises you make, the money will follow. In fact you'll have more work than you can do. It sounds simple but so many shops don't get this. If you're only in it for the money you'll fail. Cheap, fast, good. Pick any two.

I have used 12 rib serpentine belts on centrifugal supercharger. We always had problems keeping the belt from slipping even with a lot of tension. The other problem was the belt getting out of shape at higher RPM. Since your are running a slower turning diesel you might stay within the belts abilities. We found that anything over 6000 RPM caused belt issues.

My first ever car was a little diesel car called a 94 Citröen AX mk2 and it had a 1.36 liter (89 cubic in) inline 4 atmospheric indirect injection engine in it, spewing out just a few donkeys above 50 hp and spending around 4l/100km (~59 mpg). The whole car probably weighted less than that engine you're building (690 kg 1521lbs) but the car nerd in me still loves every bit of these series, even if it is unobtanium to us Europeans. Mr. Banks is a pleasure to listen to and the mechanical engineer (not automotive) in me, really enjoys hearing about all the packaging details. The more the merrier.

Really enjoyed this episode...my mouth is watering at what you are doing on the engine for the supercharger and cooling. Funny part about this is I am not a Diesel person but loving this setup...can't wait for the finished product. I assume you will put this on the dyno before putting the engine in the truck....don't want to miss that episode.....thx

Gale & team, I wish more people thought like us: Pierce the vail and don't follow the crowd. Love your callouts; it is literally unbelievable how much the herd follows one performance shop's mundane and non-innovative products. I struggle with this issue a lot where I work, as I hate being tasked with making "our own version of another companiy's product". Then there's the fact that the LS community still thinks oiling system fortification is a "maybe" and it's so funny to watch people go thru the same failure patterns untill they realize they need dry sump oiling systems if they wanna be competitive. I love seeing Banks Power stray from making "me too" parts. I wish y'all weren't in Cali bc I'd love to work Banks.

Jarott, first, thank you for watching and the kind words. Gale has prided himself on never following the herd, as you pointed out. Although it earns us respect in the long run. However, it can be painful because people often resist change. You just have to stick to your guns and continue to innovate, despite the naysayers.

I love projects like this, Reminds me of the lly I bolted into a 2500 avalanche with a Allison transmission, I was a sick ride, It was jacked up and I didn't know the Stock spring was completely broken at the right rear, I flipped it on the roof while doing a burn out and the rear axle let go. The brakes weren't good enough to stop all of this power when the axle let go tripping it over into a deep ditch with hardly any forward motion. Three people were with me lucky no one was injured, the roof had windshield didn't do so well.🤓

This may or may not have been mentioned earlier in these comments, but I'll do so again if it has. Instead of using the antiquated method of using a wet system to drop the intake air temperature, and I do realize that this method does have a parasitic draw on the power being built by itself. But if you use the built in refrigeration system, by doing this, not only will you get much needed drop in temperature across the entire set of runners going into the combustion chamber. But too much drop, can be counterproductive, and since we're in control of the device that's making it possible, we can now variy the cooling temperature by cycling the system through a remote sensor. To make things even more better, we have the ability to cool the interior of the truck equally as well, and from the same system already possibly in use cooling the charged air for the engine. By simply installing a set of solenoids, we can use the compressor simultaneously, without having a detrimental effect on the volume of refrigerant needed to one or the other if that's the case. As mentioned earlier, you can also monitor, and control the ambient temperature inside the manifold runner's, allowing for optimal efficiency of the intake system, and that of the interior of the truck. Thus reducing the maintenance, and not having to be dependent of someone remember to drain, and flush, and add ice to the system, if there's any available at the time it's needed. Just a gift from Mr. Carrier himself, the man that invented the whole concept, and reality of refrigeration, and dehumidifacation that is still beneficial for the majority of the World's population still today. Even if we have to pull it part of the drain system to flush anything from the lines, it doesn't mean that the system is inoperable even then. With one more advantage, it's also a green resource, because it generates clean h2o, and doesn't take away from the environment by using fresh water to cool the system. Just a thought, slightly over explained, as is typical of anything I do. Hope it meets your needs, and I would think that it would be the better choice of anything out there.

I would say the packaging will be a major factor of the power combination. IMHO a compound turbo would be the tightest packaging but if there is a set up with just a supercharger, that would look the best. Also a remote trans filter and cooler would give the extra clearance with a modified pan.

I've been working on a similar build in a k20 and the stock exhaust manifolds needed trimming to fit in-between the frame rails with the frame boxed, I'm not sure that you're manifolds will fit due to the extra width of them. The oil cooler was a fitment issue as well.

To all those that ask why, the answer is simple. He want's to do it that way. I was wondering if it might be a good idea to set the motor back a bit. Might help to clear the suspension.
