Banksy’s now infamous shredded work of art is going up for auction again. In 2018, the elusive artist stunned a room full of people at Sotheby’s when he shredded ‘Girl With Balloon’ as soon as the gavel came down. It sold for $1.4 million. Since then, the piece has been renamed ‘Love is in the Bin’ and it could be worth as much as $8.3 million according to Sotheby’s. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.

He did intend for it to be entirely shredded, and the shredder did in fact malfunction, there was a video that showed how he even made the shredder. He does hate having his art sold at auctions, it's not that he sees his art as "valueless" it's that he thinks that art's value shouldn't be the dollar bill. From what I have read up on him and learned at art school was that he has more of an issue with the capitalism in the art world. It's an issue as a lot of people now value the dollar worth and status of artwork more than the actual artwork itself. Example: rich people who want to own a Picasso because it's a "Picasso", not because they actually like the piece or the artist.

He did a social experiment a few years ago in NYC by pretending to be a central park art seller (where you can buy a lot of touristy art prints or paintings for under $100) and sold only a few of his original paintings that day for like $40 each. Really just exposed the art world… that art is only “worth” something if it’s hyped up. It was also similar to the reason he chose to have this painting set to destroy itself after being sold at an auction: basically the middle finger to the person coughing up like 20million for it (the price of the piece before it was shredded)

Banksy and every bit of his art, concept, his vision and mindset is just so dope. I remember when that auction was happening, and I was even saying, “he doesn’t like his artwork sold”, and sure enough, when the gavel went off, and it shredded, I had said that is definitely the most iconic move stamp involving Banksy’s name. If no one knew him before then, they definitely did that day. Watching all of those bidders faces watching just as if they could not believe such a thing could have happened. I can’t wait to see what next. It has been some time since that auction happened and it took Banksy some time to even organize that last one.

@@ItsDaOneMac Well, we'll have to agree to disagree. Banksy had a 15 year career before the baloon shredding that included dozens of giant public exhibits that garnered world wide attention which is exactly why the balloon auction sold for such a high price. An unkown artist couldn't demand a million dollars for some stencil art. That piece was sold purely on his reputation and name.

Commonsense, this was not a surprise to the art gallery. First, who gave them the artwork to sell? It didn't just appear at their doorstep. 2nd, Bansky installed a shredder, and you really think the art gallery didn't inspect the frame and art piece? They have professionals for just this. To prove authenticity. 3rd, as soon as it sold they panned over to the piece? They knew this was going to happen. It was staged, and Bansky gets paid for this shock factor. But it's worth more if he is anonymous, so he protects revealing his identity. This is his artwork and it cant sell unless he authorizes the sell of it. On a building or property its a different story because it's someone else's property so technically he gifted it to them as they can sell it after. But this belongs to him unless he gifts it or sells it.

The reason that he shredded it is because he/her didn’t want his art to be sold like that, so I guess it’s that much more bad feeling for him/her. Edit: If you all look into it, Banksy was actually there (allegedly)… I don’t believe that there would’ve been the capability in the frame to shred it from the web so quick, right after the gavel dropped.

Banksy is an amazing artist. Art class sure taught me many types of modern day artists out there and his work caught my attention since no one has a clue on what he really looks like in real-life.

I agree wholeheartedly with you, @twist58, his work shines a light on very important social and environmental issues by using comedy and parody to make us all look ridiculous. The best part about all of his works is that he gets the so-called serious art 'experts' and 'collectors' scrambling for his original works and they're all too stupid to realise that he's taking the p*ss out of all of them, doesn't he? Your comment about him remaining anonymous throughout his entire career is quite valid in that it only adds to his mystique and the value of any of his works when they come up for auction, doesn't it? As my late mother used to say here in England ".....some people have more money than sense, don't they? " and Banksy manages to prove her right on every occasion when his works come up for sale, doesn't he? By the way, the only thing that even we Brits know about him is that he's originally from Bristol and that's about it....as far as I'm concerned he's a National Treasure and long may he continue to produce such vicious pieces of anti-establishment works and at the same time bleed those idiots dry of all of their excessive wealth. :-)

@@Phil_A_O_Fish My art instructor even showed us a slideshow of supposed sightings of Banksy working on one of his projects, but he always had an ape mask covering his face. Not even sure if that's really him or one of his followers.

i thought banksy was like one of the best artists ever when i was growing up. looking back on it, a lot of it is like college art student level concepts. It really is just about *doing it* --- Banksy prbly thought the same thing as you at one point... "I can do that art, that's easy" --- difference is, he went out and did it... Also gotta have a combo of talent and luck... But the more you do something, the luckier you tend to get

I don’t believe for a second that Christie’s (the auction house) wasn’t in on the prank. They do rigorous inspections and would’ve been able to see that there’s a shredder or mechanisms within the frame clattering about and feeling strangely weighted for a frame. I say that because it is illegal for the seller and auction house to alter an item after the hammer price is passed. Though banksy being anonymous is free from blame, Christie’s is still contemptible. Also I don’t think it’s gonna sell for 5.5 I’d bet on a more conservative estimate if 3.5 million.
@PiXie232
@PiXie232 3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the exact same thing. Christie’s had to know about it. Or they were instructed not to tamper with the frame or backing by Banksy himself, but they still would have known something was up. It would have been too heavy for them to notice that he had something planned inside that frame.
