It kinda always sounds jarring to me when people so old from the US, especially in the US military, end up being weebs. Rationally i know that ww2 ended in 1945 which was 78 years ago (which excludes your 72 y o grandpa) and therefore for someone to have a negative opinion of japan they'd need to have lived and possibly fought back then therefore they'd need to be in their 90s (which excludes gramps even more), but somehow whenever i hear "old US veteran likes japanese stuff" i instantly get a gut reaction of "but didn't he fight those guys?". It doesn't even necessarily make sense ignoring time because plenty of vietnam veterans have gone back there as tourists iirc, but i still get that instinct.
