Nice, I had no idea the music was so good on this game. I didn't even know what Roland MT-32 was until I saw it as an emulation option in SCUmmVM. Thanks for demoing this, I wonder how much of the PC audience were able to appreciate the quality of music in 1992.

In 1992 the standard audio device was the original soundblaster, or soundblaster pro (which was expensive). The MT-32 module (or the LAPC-I, its 'internal PC soundcard' version) was very expensive ($700 in 1987) at the time as it was designed as a professionnal MIDI device for 'Home Studio'. If it was used by many games in late 80's/early 90's it's due to Sierra, which was the US official 'mass' distributor (it was also distributed in music store by licensed Roland distributors). So Sierra adapted most of its game soundtrack to take advantage of the MT-32 (listen to the King's Quest IV intro ! ). Other 'state of the art' developpers soon used it too (Origin, Westwood Studios...). Other publishers took advantage of the MT-32, but only through patches, Lucasfilms Games (former LucasArts name) made MT-32 version for the original Monkey Island and Loom... but as the MT-32 market was a tiny niche, they did not include the additionnal disk (with the patch) in the release box, customers had to send back the included cuppon (with a bankcheck for shipping) in order to get the patch disk. In Europe, as the personnal computer market was ruled by 'Amiga/Atari ST' or old 8bits computer (Amstrad CPC)... The IBM/compatible PC home market was a tiny niche (IBM/Compatible were very expensive and mostly found in professionnal market). The reason was : for half the price of a EGA 16 colors PC with Buzzer, you got an Amiga 500 with 1MB RAM, 32 colors and digitalized sound... Most of European publisher didn't care about IBM PC ports until 1991 (most european PC ports were still using only EGA 16 colors or even CGA 4 colors with buzzer sound in 1991, and most VGA version of 1990-1991 were never released in Europe, for exemple, Indiana Jones & the last crusade was only released in its EGA version in France). So there are very few European Games which use the MT-32. Note that in 1993 the General Midi was standardized, so most of games started to use GM soundcards instead of the Roland proprietary LA MIDI.

And there were the Turtle Beach Systems isa boards with stunning quality and quad ch recording, like the Multisound Classic card. Powered by Motorola 68k and 56k1 dsp with an onboard Proteus 1/xr synth

in 1992 a lot of PCs still had no sound cards at all. i think gods possibly had PC speaker music included. this was actually the first game i ever heard with a sound card - an 8 bit soundblaster so basically adlib music.

The great thing about the MT-32 was that it had editable sounds. You could make all kinds of new sounds by combining the samples and waves in ROM in different ways and and applying filters and envelopes to them. GM was actually a step backwards compared to what the MT-32 could do because you had access to the underlying synthesizer hardware unlike GM where you just had a set of canned sounds to work with.

Why do I feel like there is more to the theme.. I used to have this game back in the day and it had this really cool breakdown that synthed a series of industrial 'grinding' sounds.

As said in the video decription : actually the 'ingame' tracks were composed by John Foxx for the PC with MT-32 version (Atari ST/Amiga/PC Soundblaster only had the 'into the wonderful' theme). When the Genesis/SNES ports were released, developpers had lost the rights for using the Nation 12'into the wonderful' track so they used the ingame levels tracks and asked John Foxx for a new intro song (and an outro song too).

Am I wrong if I remember from some where the words "Into... The Wonderfull" in the soundtrack of this game. This should be a kind of Sound Blaster music. Maybe this was from some another game...

Amiga, Atari ST and PC with soundblaster had the 'Into The Wonderful' sampled sentence. MT-32 can't handle samples (but PC with MT-32 is the only computer version with ingame music). Original 'Into the Wonderful' song by Nation 12 : kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoPUkmZpgZqSj7s

This is good but wrong instruments and odd twangs. Meant to be played through a CM-series of LAPC-1 device. Still cool. But sounds much better with the right card.

@@MistaMaddog247 before the reign of pcs and dos, the amiga graphics and sounds were the best in computers, adlib was no rival for amiga sound. It was just in 1990 that pcs surpassed it with sb 16 cards and cd audio. For 3 years starting in 1987, amiga reigned supreme and had the best games, graphics and sound.

As said in the video description : on computers (Amiga, Atari ST, PC MS-DOS), the only way to have ingame music is playing the MS-DOS version with a Roland MT-32 (or compatible device like LAPC-I, CM-32L, CM-64, CM-500). ST, Amiga and DOS with adlib/soundblaster had no ingame music.

@@barbarianbros Yeah, the game cannot have one card for audio/digitized voices and the other for music/wave synthesis, it was one or the other. Roland's music can also play high quality sounds, the problem was the MT-32 music sounds were different from the Amiga original but high quality. So in general for the ms-dos version they messed up by not using wave synthesis for sb16 cards.
