Hey folks, it's about half an hour after the video uploaded, which means it's time for me to point out that I made a mistake. I overlooked Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 which is actually WB's highest grossing movie of all time worldwide. I'm not really sure how that happened other than the numbers begin to swim after hours and hours of prepping charts and I just flat out missed it. I am my own fact checker and sometimes I blow it. I will acknowledge it on next week's show but in the meantime, I look forward to everyone not reading this comment and pointing it out anyway. If these mistakes frustrate you, I can promise you, they frustrate me ten times as much. I'll get one of these episodes 100% right someday. Maybe.

Top weekends at Indian box office 1. Apr 15-17, 22: 382cr (1.8cr admits) - KGF 2, Beast, RRR 2. Aug 11-13, 23: 379cr or 390cr + 50cr = 429cr or 440cr or 403cr (1.9cr) - Gadar2, Jailer, OMG 2 3. Mar 25-27, 22: 372cr (1.6cr) - RRR, The Kashmir Files 4. Apr 28-30, 17: 363cr (2.65cr) - Baahubali 2 Including the Rs. 50 crores opening day of Jailer on Thursday, that amount exceeds Rs. 400 crores mark. 1.90 crores tickets were sold during the weekend plus another 30 lakhs for Jailer on Thursday. The Hindi Film Industry recorded its biggest ever single-day collection on August 13 with 3 films - Gadar 2, OMG 2, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani "which I guess might be get broken again on 15th Aug" The gross amount is a bit lower than April 15-17 last year, when KGF 2, Beast and RRR grossed Rs. 378 crores in between them for an overall market gross of over Rs. 382 crores approx. However, it is possible that actuals for some of the above films come a bit higher and it may ascend to the top spot. The difference between the two is barely Rs. 3 crores. Unfortunately, there is no centralised box office reporting system in India, the existence of one could have given a clear winner. In terms of admits, however, the recent weekend is clearly ahead by around 10 lakhs more tickets sold. The record for the most tickets sold over a weekend still belongs to April 28 - 30, 17, when Baahubali 2 alone accounted for a staggering 2.65 crores tickets. Numbers released by the Multiplex Association of India and the Producers Guild of India reveal that the Aug. 11-13 weekend was the busiest weekend post-pandemic, with 2.10cr+ admissions, which is also the highest combined admissions record in the last 10 years. The weekend gross box office of 390cr+ is the highest in the history of Indian cinema if you think about it but The Exact Numbers Are Up For Debate. It was Just a counter point but if the producers guild is saying it then we believe it & I am so happy that it come at such an interesting time that we are breaking records & goes to show cinema will never die. Hoping this 47 Million record gets broken early & we can rejoice again. Nona make a video on our own barbenheimer mehyem after the independence day box office nos.

The weird thing is, considering the prevailing narrative that this is the 'Summer of flops', the quality of the actual movies themselves has been better than in any mainstream Summer for quite some time. Heck, even Transformers wasn't that bad.
@Bustermachine Жыл бұрын
That's quite possibly part of the 'problem' IMO. We had basically two waves of big successes this summer. Mario/Spiderverse and then Barbenheimer while a lot of movies in between either flopped or at least underperformed historic expectations. I know who you're talking about lol The thing is, they do tend to be right about these things most of the time and they thought the same logic would apply here. But Barbie is a different thing, made for a different audience and the "normal" rules don't apply. This movie was made for women using a female-focused property not a male one, which has been Hollywood's mistake. Women aren't interested in a male-focused property just because you put women in it. It's still for men, to them. And a lot of the women going to see this movie are not the ones going to see Marvel and Star Wars (sorry, Disney). So they haven't been beat over the head with "THE MESSAGE" because they don't see the movies that do that, ironically enough. Women en masse are not going to see an action movie, sci-fi movie, etc. just because women are in it or in the lead and that's why movies like the recent Charlie's Angels failed. Women don't care. They are simply not interested. But women will absolutely go see a Barbie movie that's filled with pink and prettiness and fun because that's what females "in general" are drawn to. When I shop for clothes now, anything pink costs extra because of this damn movie lol

IMO Mission Impossible did hit with the people who saw it. The problem truly was Barbenhiemer. Releasing just a week and a half before not 1 but 2 of the biggest movies of the year killed it. Going to the movies is expensive, going to a double feature even more so. My biggest fear is that Paramount doesn’t think about any of this and does something to harm Dead Reckoning Part 2. Weather that’s cutting the budget or making them rework scenes to cut corners. The quality of the film is evident on screen and McQuarrie and Cruise shouldn’t be punished for the movie being released at a bad time.
@nikunjdixit3225 Жыл бұрын
The budget does need to be kept in check though. You aren’t going to make a profit if your MI films are going to cost $300 million to make. I get Covid costs but MI films clearly have a BO ceiling so budgets need to be managed accordingly.

You mentioned the low gross of Dalton's movies as maybe being a factor in him only doing two; he was actually meant to start filming a 3rd movie in 1990 but a legal dispute between MGM and Eon led to a huge delay, during which time Dalton's contract elapsed, and he chose not to sign a new one. The studio would have been happy to keep him around, however his departure meant they were free to pursue Brosnan, who had been their first choice before Dalton anyway, so they probably didn't chase Dalton to re-sign all that hard.
@GuineaPigEveryday Жыл бұрын
The pitch for the third Dalton Bond is insane and while Goldeneye is pretty much perfect I still would’ve wanted to see a Bond movie set in HK with Lucy Liu as Bond girl. Dalton def flopped a bit back then but nowadays he’s one of the most lauded Bond era’s, and for good reason, i never grew up with his movies but grew to love em, idk Living Daylights gets slack but I kinda love it, so rewatchable and also insanely exciting third act, and the more classic Cold War vibe and geopolitics was cool, one of the three movies in the 80s that actually tackled the Soviet Invasion in Afghanistan. The length difference between Barbie and Oppie got me thinking: Could you do a one-off next week of the top movies ranked by length (in hours) x gross? I don't want to think about efficiency of art or anything like that, but it's an interesting way to contextualize the gross given that movie theatres have fewer opportunities to show longer movies.
@DanMurrellMovies Жыл бұрын
That might be a bit too much of a project for me to take on, but I encourage anyone else who'd like to try!
@SilentNers Жыл бұрын
If a theatre has 2 screens and in one they are showing a 82min movie, the other a 180+min movie then the first has a higher return potential because they can fit more screenings in. However the longer movie could be in a bigger screen so more seats available... A shorter popular movie could have less effect on other titles released at the same time as screenings can be more regular, allowing space for others. If the top film out is a 3 hour monster it technically is more likely to prevent competition as theatres need to give over more screens than a shorter title to meet demand... hmm, yeah someone else can definitely figure all that out 😅
@TheDilettante Жыл бұрын
@@SilentNers So I'm guessing that first effect is like 3rd or 4th order. Even if you have an enterprising theatre owner who's trying to optimize for BitS, you still have a relatively small and consistent variance in screening room sizes per theatre (citation needed but I'm sure I can find one). Your points on spacing and demand are another reason why it would be interesting to look at this metric: so you can see how much of a typical theatre's 4D real estate is taken up by a given movie.
@thegreyinitiate3680 Жыл бұрын
I feel like it’s entirely dependent on what the movie is and if people are excited to see it. Endgame was almost 3 hours long and became the highest grossing film of all time. Oppenheimer is the event movie of the year for a lot of people, and the Barbenheimer engine just kept pushing it along. It’s now going to be Chris Nolan’s most successful movie ever that doesn’t involve a man dressed as a bat. And going back even further, when LOTR released, even the theatrical versions were pushing 3 hours long and they all were still some of the highest grossing movies ever at the time. If it’s good, and people are excited to see it, they will come, no matter how long it is.

Can't do every chart every week - I'm barely maintaining quality for what I'm doing now. Sometimes I have to recognize my own limits.

@@DanMurrellMovies First of all, I’m honored that you replied! You have great interaction with your fan base. Second of all, I know personally that it is very important to know your limitations, because you can easily get burnt out doing something you love. You have inspired me to do THAT chart on my own and keep tabs on the films that are out. So I have my estimations, I just wanted to see if they lined up with yours. Keep doing what you are doing Dan, but do so where you are within your “bandwidth”.

To quote the great sage Yogurt: "Merchandising, merchandising, where the real money from the movie is made! Spaceballs-the T-shirt, Spaceballs-the Coloring Book, Spaceballs-the Lunch box, Spaceballs-the Breakfast Cereal, Spaceballs-the Flame Thrower! (The kids love this one.)"

Every time I hear Dan say "Merchandising" I hear Mel Brooks in my head saying it :P

Oldboy, at least in my market, is a VERY limited release. Super sad it wasn’t more easily accessible, especially considering how popular it became after its initial release. 😞

I didn't know Bottoms was directed by Emma Seligman. That definitely makes me want to watch it since I loved Shiva Baby.

Man, the blide side’s news really shocked me. If that’s true, poor Oher, hope he win the allegations

"I don't know how you can have anymore". Oh naive Dan, we are insatiable. You could give me a numbers episode every day and I'd eat it up and ask for me.

As an amc stubbs member, my 69th movie so far this year will be oldboy. Take that as you will.

23:39 I like to think Dan put the Biopics top 5 in just to make the point about Michael Oher.

As a semi-old-but-young-at-heart doofus, I spent more money on Mutant Mayhem toys than I did on movie tickets for the film 🤙

Request for one specific chart for next week though I know it's not super quick There's a flurry of alltime worldwide grosses from $1.6B/8th (Jurassic World) down to $1.3B (Jurassic World 2) including Mario. I'd LOVE to see Barbie's line chart of cumulative daily grosses against those other lines, to see where it LOOKS like it is fitting in. Could set the other lines to half transparency to make the main line stand out. Although I think that's impossible, so I guess it would have to be domestic? If domestic; maybe the 10 films between Maverick (719M) and Mario (574M)... Day 25 for Barbie is 531M compared to 521M for Avatar 2, 524M for Avengers, and 507M for Incredibles 2 - interesting stuff! :)

ps agreed with the other comments - love the lost theaters, what appear to be better numbers for Indian films, and particularly the profitability calculation stuff (as everywhere else that's 'informed' still just doubles the purported budget and compares to total ticket revenue!!) - really appreciate it all, and using box office estimates doesn't upset me in the slightest :)

Haunted Mansion has left my local market already, but 4 of the 5 theaters in my district are still playing Elemental for one more week. Big "oof" for Haunted Mansion.

For what it’s worth, Transformers Rise of the Beasts just came out here in Japan, so while there may not be any more markets for the movie to co e out in, that doesn’t mean it’s stopped making money from some of those markets. It’s still making money. Interestingly, at my local cinema anyway, the only showings are dubbed in Japanese, which is strange for live action films, which generally have subbed versions.

It’s just unbelievable that a movie costing 350 million will require 850 million more to break even that means 500 million more !! It’s not just double but more

It's also about where the movie makes its money - the bulk of GOTG Vol. 3's money came from international territories. Less of that money comes back to the studio.

@@DanMurrellMovies I think without avengers in the title , no marvel movie should ever cost that much and I don’t know how much they are making back from the TV shows which is costing millions or not billion . I know sags strike is going on but these movie star makes too much money

Yes, I was shocked too. Most places (wikipedia for example) are going to say Budget $250m box office $850m which makes it look like a box office smash. But, yeah, additional 100-150m on marketing, share 40-60% revenue with cinemas, plus hidden first day takings. A lot of people did make a lot of money from this film though, just maybe not the studio directly
