Join the Barefoot Doctors on the trans-Atlantic voyage as they approach St Helena and enjoy a few days of rest and land based exploration. We see spctacular vertical double rainbows on the way into St Helena, the Napoleon's house, tomb and life size model. We also see the worlds oldest living mammal, Jonathan, a 191 year old land tortoise!
We struggle up Jacobs Ladder after a huge English breakfast - that is 699 steps and 180m high vertical climb. We visit Boer cemetery with Paul Badenhorst's namesakes that died during this imprisonment of Boers during the war in 1901-1903....
We also take you through a walkthrough of the Portofino 52 design using a CAD program and share many of the unique internal features that the boat comes with....
This is a long video of 35 minutes, so hopefully you find it valuable and interesting - so please let us know in comments if you think it is too long!!!!
The first Patreon sailing event is in the week of 17th Sept in Gocek, Turkey so those lucky to be patrons on our channel can join us for this great week of sailing the Turquoise Coast of Turkey with us on our Leopard 45!!! Join up if you want to have those opportunities...
Our Patreon option starts from only $3 per week, and will allow our supporters to enjoy live updates, join us for sailing events in Gocek, Turkey (Sept 2023), Aegean Greece, May 2024. Then in Dubai Jan 2025 (aboard the new Portofino 52) join us for the launching party and test sails!!! We are also offering boat build tours with sailing off Dubai to share the progress of the P52 build and provide whatever sailing or life discussions that YOU want us to provide during all of these events..... It is a very exciting prospect and we have been requested repeatedly to give advice, take folk sailing, teach sailing techniques etc etc.... So here it is!!!
Any Patreons will have the choice to join us for these events which are usually about 5 days to be up close and personal with Eli and John and learn from their expertise... There will be sailing trips, excursions and chats during the events and the subjects will be designed to suit the participants that will be there. Patreons will receive all the sailing and talks with the Barefoot Doctors without any cost but will only have to cover their own travel, food and accomodation costs.
All Patreon proceeds go to Exqisit Life Foundation to support TUFMINDS Mental Resilience and Suicide Prevention Program worldwide.
Some come Barefoot with us on this exciting journey - now physically and in person with Patreon if you wish!!!
Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions!
WHAT IS TUFMINDS

It's going to be interesting to see how you resolve the massive void behind the 2 door fridge/freezer. Looking forward to the build updates as it comes together.

Hi Adam, I did answer this before but is seems it did not load. The lower half of that space is the cabin and the space from waist up will be used for the Air Con system.

Oh Yeah, that was absolutely mind blowing stuff, what and episode, what an adventure. John u looked so much happier about 3mins after u put ur feet on solid ground, St Helena is such a treasure trove of history and herstory, incredibly tough and ruggard, with an energy, I'm sure u felt. The Barefoot Portofino Teasers, are great but I wonder if I put the vlog on fast forward, will the floating mansion get built and quicker, oh well it was a thought😭 Eli u look stunning as usual, with that twinkle Back in ur eyes.🤔 Thanks for sharing these beautiful, memorable moments in ur lives with us. ? Will subscribers get a chance to meet u and sail with u as well or just patrons. Because my Love for u both is Priceless 💖👣 oh and the boats too.🏳️‍🌈 be safe xx

I Karlene, great to hear from you again - we were worried because of the silence for all these weeks! Subscribers will get a chance to meet up with us in Dubai for sure but the sailing in Gocek is for Patreons (limited numbers...). If folk come to Dubai when the 52 is complete, I am sure we will take them all sailing though. We also have meet ups in different countries when we ware travelling so perhaps we will do one in Australia around Xmas this year when we are back...

John, great crossing! Met Neil in St Pete at same boat yard we are having our Leopard 42, SV Amore, provisioned. Just saying goodbye to Hurricane Idalia this morning. Tampa/St Pete dodged another one. BTW, if you have fixed docks, I highly recommend TideSlides! Amore road up and down on the slides beautifully.

It was interesting to see many places on St Helena and Jonathan again. I was last there in 1955 as a 5-year-old. It was just my mother and I. We did use Jacob's Ladder, but we went down. At the time, some locals would hook their arms and legs over the rails and slide down. At the time, they had me stand on Jonathan. He was around 120 then. I'm amazed that he's still alive. There were two companions at the time, both younger. I presume they have died.

In 15 years working on cruise ships, I’m luckily never been seasick but once, after a very raff Atlantic crossing, land sick for an hour.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Жыл бұрын
Well done for never being seasick! In certain situations I can feel sick and it's amade worse with anxiety, closed space (eg working in cramped engine room) and foul smells (diesel, toilets, rotten food, other people vomiting). So I think it can happen to anyone with the right conditions but when you start to feel it, you can take steps to stop it....

I get motion sickness easily. Was on a cruise on older cruise ship to Bahamas in early December. Took my mother and sister. Got really rough on the way back. Neither had ever had any motion sickness. I was ok until they got sick. When I went to get some sea sickness pills for them, there was a line as most of the crew was sick. Many said they had never been sick before.

Hi folks, really enjoyed the mixed content, St Helena looks an interesting place. Was never sea sick despite some very rough seas, but land sickness was very real. As Paul mentioned when taking a pee it was very noticeable. Boat design looks great.

the boat looks amazing just out of curiousity the centre boards will they only have a 90 degree postion and 45 degree aswell just the 45 degree option would help for despelling weeds and will give you a bit more shallow draft and staying in control of the boat and also divert all seaweed and debre away from the props as same as McConaghy 60 also what type of anchor system you having a duel anchor system like shown on the cat 70 portifino that would look cool
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew. The cnetreboard can be held at any angle you like - fully down, slightly angled back, 45* and almost fully up but with just a little bit for steerage / rudder protection, and any angle in between. It is driven by a motor so can be stopped at any point. The double anchor system is not being done for us because of weight and size of the boat - very thin hulls.

Napoleon's prison wasn't that bad! But my great gran father was part of the trip to get him back to France where he is now residing in the Invalides in Paris. We still have a celebration on the 5th of May every year!

Wow, Jero that is amazing that your father relocated the remains to France!!! Yes the "prison" was very pleasant and we were at his "prison" on Elba too that was equally luxurious! Living in luxury but he must have felt humiliated - shame!

Are you concerned about the noise with the engine bed being next to the engine room?
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Жыл бұрын
Hi Brandt, thanks for the interest and we are not worried about this as the engine rooms will be sound proofed and completely separate sealed rooms. Compare this to the boats that have the engine under the beds and you have to lift the mattress to access and service the engine....

I can attest to Mal de debarquement being very real. I have, touch wood, yet to suffer sea sickness (there is a sea for every stomach) but after a few days on board I have a very ordinary time back to land, particularly when lying down trying to sleep that first night. Nausea and sensation of surging. Not fun, good reason to stay aboard.

Hi Barry, yes in the CAD Raffa had cut the one engine wall off by mistake but the engine is just rear of the master cabin and in front of the sho0wer. Also if you go to the 2D plan when looking at the dive room, you will see the two hulls layouts there too.
