Cool thing about the bridge on the Squire is that it can be easily replaced with damn near anything you want, with minimal amount of holes to plug. Mostly because there's no string-through holes drilled all the way through the body. I did a bridge swap on a squire strat body, and replaced it with a Schaller Hannes 6 bridge, because it too had a hardtail bridge that was front mounted versus string-through :)

Change in plans! Ibanez is releasing their own short scale bass/baritone. The SRC6 is coming out in a few months. It’s $800, but you get bartoloni passive humbuckers with an active 3 band eq, it’s multi scale and it looks so much more versatile. But instead of coming at the direction of making a guitar with a longer scale, they are taking a bass and making it shorter with guitar spacing. Best of all it’s still cheaper than what a Squire VM Baritone JM will cost you.

All I know is this. I picked up a Harley Benton HB JA-60SB awhile back, and it stays in its case. Because if I take that thing out, I won't use any other guitar I own. I purposefully play the others and keep that thing out of rotation. Out of the packaging, the bridge pickup got marked up by the pick I was using. So this told me things is cheap here. I got a blue stained soapbar pickup within 2 hours of owning. But that guitar is awesome. And with this Baritone JA, I noticed the same thing. It somehow "floats" argggh. This is difficult to describe. What it sends out is a very direct sound from those pickups. But when you put effects, or EQ on it post-recording, production mix stage, the thing floats. It sits so well in any mix. And you can throw a heapload of reverb/delay, just washed in effects, and it just keeps its "integrity" but allows you to manipulate it to no end. I would use it on EVERYTHING I compose/record, but I purposefully don't. Because I won't use any other guitar I own, which includes another Harley Benton (the SC-550 II BCF, which is great itself) Squiers/Fenders etc. Shame about the tuning pegs on the Baritone, but as said, the JA-60's pickups got marked up by a pick! So I knew what I was getting for under £140. BUT IT SOUNDS GREAT.
@Blockaid404092 жыл бұрын
So, the full mix sounded incredible with the HB JA! I love the way those pickups sound with that low E tuning! What I find interesting however, when you were doing the A/B testing between the two instruments in the video, I zoned out for a moment while listening to the two sound bits- I can't tell a difference sound wise. They sound pretty much IDENTICAL if you ask me. That's incredible! Thanks for the video Baena! Now I need to pick one of these JA's up...

I notice that the Squier out of the two is definitely fizzier but it does have better note definition whereas the HB has an unpleasant 'klonk' sound to it, as if there's a scoop in the upper mids and too much treble at the same time. I'd go for the Squier out of the two because that aspect I don't care for could be toned down with settings but the sound from the HB is not really something you can get rid of as easily, though arguably it will help it cut through a mix where everything is set really loud.

The Squier doesn't have P90s. The Jazzmaster pickups have alnico rod magnets pointing at the strings, like other fender pickups, whereas P90s have bar magnets under the bobbin, more like a humbucker, which is basically two smaller P90s shoved next to each other to get rid of interference.

The Squier VM Barry's original MSRP was waaaay below $500. I initially opted instead to buy two of the Affinity HH JMs launched during the same lineup. Great players and mod platforms BTW. The HB clones would IMO definitely be an expected "mod box" needing tuners, tone/treble caps, and pot upgrades out of the gate. Honestly? I would of done the same for the VM had I got one back in the day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Kudos to HB tho for pulling the needed emergency brake on a genuinely over-hyped out of production Squier one off. There is absolutely no reason to overpay for a used "budget" guitar like the Squier VM, which will typically need about the same amount of TLC and mods, if not more, post purchase. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Nice demo content BTW Andrew! For $250 including shipping? My money's on the HB. With enough saved investment coin to spare for an amp & pedalboard to boot by comparison! HAha! 😈😈😈😈😈😈

It also seems like it's going to be tought to set up a perfect action. But it actually sounds pretty good. My Squier JM, the sound is an "acquired taste" but good for various types of "indie rock", the neck, fretwork and action are great, BUT: you can tell that the hardware - and pretty much the whole thing except the neck - is pretty chinsy and this guitar is simply NOT worth much more than the original retail price of €350.
