You should hold down the Bb key when playing a low A, yes you can play a low A with it now held down, but pad closure is much better when holding Bb down. It's just good habit.

Yes, holding down the B or Bb table key is absolutely a good habit to make. Makes it faster to get down to the low A as it takes some of the weight off that thumb key

Great advice as always Adrien. One other area of playing Baritone that is important is perfecting pianissimo legato entrances. Sometimes the bari is playing in the string section and it is an absolute requirement a perfect attack-ppp or fff in the bottom from low A upwards. I played a lot of Bari in. Vegas back in 1969-1974. This ability is an absolute must .When that down beat comes, that ppp low A unison with contra bass, and cellos better be there EVERY TIME! Or you will be looking for another gig. If the Bari is your double , make sure not to drag when when playing the bottom in tutti passages. Playing Bari is a LOT of fun once you get int to it.

I hauled my new bari into an open mic last night after my band practice. The host band was intrigued. I managed to fall into some cool grooves. “All the Time in the World” in G works out well. Also ”Rock and Roll, Hootchie Koo”. At the end of the session, a jolly guy invited me to take a seat. I thought he was just a jovial drunk, gushing about how well I played. After we chatted for a while, he revealed that he is a producer involved in local musicals. Also, the local symphony. He asked if I might be interested. We exchanged cards. This shows that you don’t have to play a bari really well. Just having a bari opens opportunities.

excellent video! I was fortunate enough to learn the transposition of an Eb horn and how it relates to concert pitch bass clef back in 8th grade when I first tried playing trombone as an alto sax player. This proved to be an invaluable skill as a multi-horn player/arranger. Great tips in this video.

Another thumbs up for the Metalite M5 for bari. I am not a fan of Rico mouthpieces or plastic mouthpieces in general, but when I was struggling putting air through the horn with my Meyer 6m I found the M5 has a little bit smaller chamber and it makes enough difference that I can belt out the low notes on 'Moanin' without struggling. Great tone. When I started playing, I was on alto(an old Martin that my father bought at a pawn shop), but my heart was on the tenor. In high school, I met with members of the saxophone section in our band. There were two girls who were doublers. One played tenor but she also plays alto and another played baritone but changed to alto. When I moved up to tenor, I was curious about the baritone and soprano. I guess the inspiration for playing the baritone was from Eric Leeds(a frequent collaborator with Prince)who performed on the album Madhouse 16, where he played tenor, baritone and flute. The soprano because of Kenny G. My instructor in college played alto, tenor and baritone. He and I listened to a performance of a band playing Lover Man. He told me that the baritone parts were too strong on the recording. I agreed. So, he mostly played tenor and alto on gigs. On alto, he can really project the sound. For some reason, I didn’t care for the alto. It has a bright and lighter tone than tenor and is preferred in classical music concerts(if the orchestra has one or two saxophones), while tenor is more suited toward jazz, rock and r&b. Very seldom is a tenor used in classical music (I had seen a video clip on KZbin of a performance of Prokofiev‘s Romeo & Juliette’s Waltz Of The Knights in which a tenor player is featured. The orchestra performing was the London Symphony Orchestra). I had studied the differences and commonalities of all the saxophones and I was surprised to find that P. Mauriat makes a baritone that is in the key of B-flat and is made for soloists. I became interested in this baritone. Do you think as a tenor player, playing an instrument in the same key is helpful?
@Sirvalorsax
@Sirvalorsax 4 жыл бұрын
Both the P. Maurait baritone saxophones are in Eb. The make one that only goes down to a low Bb and they also make a low A bari sax. Personally I prefer a low Bb bari sax. Keys are designated to a wind instrument by the commonality of fingerings. This makes going from one instrument to another easier. For example, flute and saxophone. Having these instruments in the same key makes transposing easier.
@garyreid6165
@garyreid6165 4 жыл бұрын
@Sirvalorsax. I have noticed that saxophone players play flute. I have even seen tenor saxophone cases that have a compartment specifically for a flute. How easy is it to play the flute if you play a tenor? Are the fingering arrangement the same as a tenor?

Hi Sir Valorsax, First of all I want to thank you for your enormous amount of tutorial stuff just out there for grabs. First time I ever watched one of your video's I was completely dumbfounded and could not make sense of your tutorials at all, however after watching them for years and some of them for the fourth and fifth time I slowly started to understand what you were talking about. I'm am Dutch so language is an issue possibly and I'm not critisizing. It was entirely due to my slow little brain. By now I'm exploring the possibilities of the third octave on my tenor and this is entirely thanks to you! So up to the next gear: the fourth octave! Last note: I like your jokes al lot and I have this suspicion that you make these videos in those funny closet like places with all the odd bits, tools, old laundry etc out of dedain for the more serious musicology students that analyse jazz standards on clips on you tube. So thanks very very much and lots of success! Nico, from the Netherlands

I'm a bari player. I've used the harness ever since occassionally throwing my back out with the neck strap. I'm full figured so I wear it under jackets and cover ups. And I usually wear black. I prefer metal hooks, but it it is too narrow it will eat through the brass. I've played for years and stick to 2.5 or 3 reed for the best sounds (2.5 for concert/classical) Legere Signatures are great on bari too. I love my Selmer C* mouthpiece but it is pricy. When I transpose, I just change the clef and add 3 #s. (In this case you are left with 1#) The accidentals are just adjustments to resulting key signature.

You are definitely right about the low a thing, but actually, doing that can cause damage to the horn. It puts all of the weight of all the pads and keys for those table notes onto one rod, and over time this rod can bend.

Have you ever tried a standard bari sax that goes to low B flat? It sounds much more open and husky. The low a extension constricts the entire timbre of the horn because the original design is from high F to low B flat. Narrowing the bell and extending it doesn’t work on a conical design. It works only on a cylindrical design such as bass clarinet. I’ve played both low A and B flat Baris and the B flats have a sweeter sound.
@Sirvalorsax
@Sirvalorsax 5 жыл бұрын
It has been years since I've played a low Bb bari sax. I agree that the sound is more saxophonical in the same way that I think a curved soprano sounds better than a straight one but the low A trend has caught on and I see no sign of it slowing. If I had to buy one, I would go for the low A. The next soprano I buy will be a curved one.
@Njderig
@Njderig 5 жыл бұрын
Sirvalorsax i agree with the curved soprano sounding better. I think the only reason the low A bari caught on is for two reasons. Low a plays a concert C and having to lug around a huge expensive Bass sax isn’t practical. Although I do like the sound of a vintage bass way more than modern basses.

I just got a bari in September and having lots of fun with it. My current band thinks it’s pretty cool and I’m playing three songs in our set list on bari. I was smacking myself in the head when I saw that bass clef would read as treble clef transposed for Eb. Of course. Because I play with guitar players who love E and A, that’s C# and F# for bari so lots of sharps. That’s a workout for the pinkies, but for a lot of runs and arpeggios, the left pinky can land on the C# table key, and that works for G# and I can leave it there as I go on down for the low C#. Do you have anything for bari altissimo? There is one you tuber that shows some fingerings. I could roll up to a G, then couldn’t hit any others until I got to D which popped right out.

As for doubling, would you feel it would be an hindrance for a brass player to attempt to learn sax purely in concert pitch? I get it would be easier to switch between the different saxophones if I learned the transposed C Major fingering, but I'm used to playing instruments that are wrote as they sound and the sax's diatonic fingering aligns with the a lot stuff I already play on brass. Plus, specifically for bari, I play low brass, so the bari sax would likely cover a bass clef part I would normally play anyway, lol
@Sirvalorsax
@Sirvalorsax 4 жыл бұрын
If you choose Bari sax, I think that is an excellent Idea. Transposition is one of the most difficult things to do on any instrument. Keep in mind, most professional sax players will learn to read in concert pitch. To answer your question, YES.... but learn to read the written (transposed) notes as well

Bass sax is more uncommon. Plus why play bari when Bass sax has more bottom? Plus it's in Bb so it's easier to play similar notes on the horn if your a tenor sax or Soprano sax player. Bass sax has a really good altissimo range as well it can get up there if your an experienced player.
@charlienyc1
@charlienyc1 5 жыл бұрын
@@christianhenry4173 Bari & bass saxes are different instruments with different sonorities and purposes. Bass sax wouldn't be practical playing big band charts due to slower keywork and the extra air required. They're also harder to find. Bari sax wouldn't be good for playing something that requires the 'fog horn' low Bb of the bass. With the older bass saxes you HAVE to play altissimo fingerings, as they're only keyed up to high Eb.

@Sirvalorsax
@Sirvalorsax 5 жыл бұрын
I think that they are solid in their price range but as far as baritone sax goes, I would rather just save up for a used pro Selmer or a new Cannonball.

Personally i love cannonballs, got mine at a sam ash. Its a brute and i managed to talk em down 500 and included a c star selmer mouthpiece for 3,000

I find the Rico metalite to be just too much in a lot of big band and combo work even though I like mine very much, my vote for someone who is doubling would be a Rico grafonite or a Yamaha 5c. You rock the stock mouthpiece way to much to warrant anything that’s not super expensive though.

I did use the Fibracell with the Rico mouthpiece. Those reeds can bring out a new level of brightness.

I do not. I have been looking for a vintage low Bb to have it "pimped" by one of the restoration companies but those plans have been put on hold.

@@Sirvalorsax I know this comment is 2 years old but I'm a sax player and started playing my horn since the 6th grade and haven't stopped I'm 44 now. So far as music theory Its something I desire to grasp but I can read music to get by but I agree I can do better. I play by ear and that is a gift it comes easy to me and some struggle with that. But I came along your channel sourcing on KZbin and got hooked from your 80's TV show's tunes that I recognized, I believe all Tenor players in band tried to master the Rozanne Bar show riff! So to make a long story short, I now have and started playing on Bari Sax which I just got off of eBay for a good price but had to get it adjusted and worked on. But its a TANK an old vintage King Tempo JK stencil from back in the day that I found on line and that sir if by now you don't have one for gigging Is a good start. Also your music theory is the best I've seen in a long time since my college band years PVAMU and loved the break downs, So yes you gave me some homework! I hope I was a little help, definitely subscribing.

Where did you make this video? Some interesting rooms and spaces... I’m also considering picking up a bari. I played baritone in a few big bands a long long time ago and enjoyed it. Any comment on inexpensive Chinese horns sold on amazon - www.amazon.com/Estella-BS200-Lacquer-Baritone-Saxophone/dp/B0741GDMQR ? Thanks.

I did buy an Allora soprano saxophone that is made in Vietnam and it is really good. I don't know about the Chinese ones yet. Bari can have a lot go wrong because of its size and it has more parts so I would check my local music store to see if the have any used ones there first.
