Actually, at the time of Portuguese in India, when they lost to other colonial powers like English they buried many their wealth and they will put a man to guard it after some rituals. For some days they are given food through some small passages, then usually they die, due to many issues or when the other powers came the Portuguese left the place to come back after sometime and they will not get supplies continuously so they die. Mostly African slaves are put in the treasure room, after the rituals, they believe even if the guard is dead he will protect treasure. You can still find temples where they are believed to have buried the wealth and the slaves, all around old Portuguese colonies like Kochi. Mohanlal said in an interview that the story is inspired from the stories and history. The spirit guarding the treasure is treated like demigods in some places and they are called 'Kappiri Muthappan', Muthappan is like god, and Kappiri is the African. So in this case Mohanlal is a spirit or ghost who has been guarding treasure or the girl (as per the trailer) or both, but the name says the Spirit guarding the treasure, who has magical powers, and waiting for the rightful heir to come and claim the treasure.
