When KISS was formed, it was their goal to be like something that was NEVER seen before, and to leave the crowd stunned at what they just witnessed. All four members sang lead also, with certain songs. Paul and Gene sang the majority of them, but Peter Criss (drummer) and Ace Frehley (lead guitar) had songs they sang too.

Some of them refused to be killed by the disco they quick and the others were surfing on the big musical waves, new styles old styles splashed. I think I was lucky to be a witness of that BIG BANG ‼️ in the music history. Was the time when so many fans were “betrayed “ by their musical idols. Just like that . "The Midnight Special" was a late night weekly television program that aired on NBC beginning in 1972. Usually had several bands, sometimes some standup comedy, and was hosted by legendary radio DJ Wolfman Jack. It was notable in that performers actually performed live, in front of a live audience, rather than lip syncing to their recordings, which was how most bands appeared on other television shows. It has gained cachet in the KZbin era because a wide library of these performances exist, and the quality of recording was uncommonly good for a television program in the early 70's. Many of the performances feature bands that may not have any other film or video of them performing live even available...

As someone born in the early 1960s, I grew up during an incredible time in the presence of music. In high school, Friday nights were for partying, but I had to be home early enough to watch The Midnight Special! Same with Saturday nights, but to watch "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert!" And now and then, there were incredible musical performances on "Saturday Night Live!" There were so many incredible musical guests on those shows. With the Midnight Special, they required acts to play live, no lip-sync. I'll never forget the show that featured a solo performance by Todd Rundgren, the song, "Hello, It's Me." They announced that Todd would be performing, singing and playing piano to his own backing track. There are so many amazing performances out there,in particular by a band called "Fanny," a quartet of incredibly talented women who prepared the way for bands like The Runaways, The Bangles and The Go-Gos.

Kiss live was awesome. The platform shoes enhanced their "larger than life" image. They literally looked like giants, and each persona was mesmerizing. Regular shoes would have been too passe, or normal. They wanted to go all out, and this clip was early Kiss. Their stage show continued to be more and more sophisticated and each tour had more additional effects, i.e. lasers, flames, Gene spitting fire and rising to the rafters, Paul going on a zip line to the center of the arena, Peter's drum riser coming to the front of the stage during his solo, and rising to the ceiling at the end of "Black Diamond", and Ace's guitar shooting rockets. They are sang lead. Check out the Catman drummer on "Hooligan" live in Houston 1977. You'll both dig his r&b voice.

This video is made even better because it was the original Kiss line up playing. I saw them live in concert back in 1975 and they blew me away. Because of their stage antics, it's often overlooked what good musicians they are. Ace Frehley is a premier lead guitarist and Peter Criss is an excellent drummer. It's called 'shock rock'. And Kiss were masters at it. As they became multi-millionaires they could afford to go over-the-top on effects,....lasers, bombs, fire, etc .In the years that followed, other bands started copying.

I saw this band, this same year, this same set design and band look, 1975, in a small town college gymnasium. I was 14. There might have five hundred people there. What always impressed me about that concert was that, while they were still on their way up, they were already big enough that I could see them not really knocking themselves out for a small crowd in a small town, but there was none of that. They hit it hard, with an attitude that seemed to be: "There might not be many people here, but those that are are going to see the greatest show of their lives, and remember it forever"...Highly commendable, and highly indicative of their drive at the time...

Yeah, Kiss was a very good band and had great songs. When I played in metal bands back in the 80's and 90's a lot of my musician friends were Kiss freaks. I was personally Led Zeppelin, but I did still like Kiss too. One of my good friends (Sam) who was playing bass in his own band called "Nightmare" and who also wrote all the songs for his band, he was also a big Kiss fan. He actually got to meet Gene Simmons in person and talk to him. He had showed me pictures of him with Gene and also showed me a bass guitar pick that Gene had given him which had his name right on it. That was pretty cool. All the members of Kiss were songwriters, but Gene and Paul Stanley wrote the majority of their material. Even the band Motley Crue were huge Kiss fans. That's the reason you see them made up in make up in the older songs from their earlier albums. You can see this in their earlier videos for songs like "Livewire", "Looks That Kill" and "Too Young To Fall In Love". Lead guitarist Micky Mars even does the blood thing that Gene Simmons does in the Motley Crue video "Livewire". He does it near the end of the video. Nice reaction from both of you.

First saw KISS in concert back in January '78. KISS slaughtered the 19,000+ crowd at the Spectrum in Philly that night. Ticket price back then was $8.00. I still have my ticket / ticket stub. They dominated the mid to late 70's and crushed it thru the 80's. I went on to see them 10 more times, most recently October 23, 2023 in Nashville to another sold out show. Fact: KISS has more GOLD records than any band in history. More than the Beatles, Elvis, the Stones, Led Zep, anyone. Their final concert, December 2nd, 2023 at Madison Square Garden not only sold out but, 551,000 people paid to watch the show live through Pay-Per-View. It was historic, KISSTORY in fact!
