Reminds me of an incident when I was playing "over the line" on the street when I was a teenager. An older brother of one of my friends strongly disliked me and had threatened me a few times. I was pitching and he was batting. We used a softball to play this game. He told me he was going to hit the ball right at my head and "shove it right down my throat." His team was losing by one run and it was the 9th inning with his being the last out I needed. He did as promised and hit the ball very hard so it was coming directly at my face at a high rate of speed. Just like these pitchers I instinctively threw my glove up in front of my face and then moved my head to the right quickly. I caught the ball and his team lost, something they said would never happen. I can't imagine what would have happened if I hadn't acted so quickly.

I played hockey most of my life and was never concerned about getting hurt because of all the equipment we had , but when I played baseball primarily second base that ball comes fast and hard and at times it's scary because that ball can hurt you and getting in front of line shots and ground balls is not easy because alot of times the ball would take a wierd hop and hit you in the face or your head , these pitchers are very brave because that ball is coming at you hard and fast and can actually kill you if hit in the head !

Julie Enslow instincts come from the brain. What are u on about?
@julieenslow59155 жыл бұрын
@@nylepentik2696 Certain reactions - pain is an example - are the result of sensation which goes from the body part feeling pain to the spine, and back to the body part which pulls away. Brain is not involved. Muscle memory is another example. Instinct may have been the wrong word for this process. I believe this was more muscle memory than anything else, due to a very great deal of practice.
@nylepentik26965 жыл бұрын
@@julieenslow5915 that may be the stupidest thing ive ever heard. This was literally taught in primary school. Brain is involved in everything, even pain.
@julieenslow59155 жыл бұрын
@@nylepentik2696 You have never pulled your hand away from something before you realized it was hot? Do your homework, check it out. The brain feels pain after it happens - but you can react to the pain before you know you have been hurt. Muscle memory also does not use the brain to respond initially. The brain IS involved in conditioning the muscles, but once a particular movement is fully learned and repeated a huge number of times the body can respond to stimulus without thought.
