Ah, the Old Fashioned, the world's first classic cocktail and a recipe that's endured for hundreds of years. To celebrate the launch of my beautifully designed t-shirt and pay homage to the OG cocktail, here I make the original recipe as well as 3 of my favorite variations.

I know it's not a "classic" Old Fashioned, but I like to muddle the orange peel with the sugar cube and bitters, then add the whiskey and ice. It ratchets up the orange taste a bit, but I find it makes a delicious cocktail.
@bryanfuel
@bryanfuel 6 жыл бұрын
I also love doing this along with doubling the bitters. The one thing you have to worry about is over-muddling or else it starts to get very bitter from the peels

Two dashes refers to dashes directly out of the bitters bottles. When using a dasher bottle, you have to compensate for how short the dashes are. For every 1 dash out of a bottle, it’s 2-3 dashes out of a dasher bottle.

Love me a quick double rum old-fashioned :) Sugar, 2 dashes orange bitters, 4 dashes angosturra bitters, 1 shot kraken dark rum, 1 shot sailor jerry's/captain morgan spiced rum, ice. The kraken and the spiced rum even out to be a little over 40% alcohol, so the volume of the 2 shots with the alcohol content make it strong but easily sippable!

If any of you guys wanna try! Give me feedback : Smoked Cherry Old Fashioned -2oz of Bourbon -2 barspoon of maple sugar -3 barspoon of hot water -3 dash of cherry bitters -Lemon -Maraschino cherry -Wood Instructions : 1. In a mixing glass, put the maple sugar and hot water. Stir well to dilute as much sugar as possible. You can use 2 barspoon of maple syrup instead, if you have some at disposition. 2. Add the cherry bitters (I personally use Cherry Bark and Vanilla Bitters) and stir to incorporate the flavors. 3. Fill the glass with ice and pour the bourbon. I find Woodford Reserve to be ideal for this drink. 4. While it sits, flame some wood chip on the back of a plate and put a double old fashioned glass on top to trap the smoke. You could use a smoke gun instead to make things easier. 5. Stir the cocktail for around 45 second. 6. Quickly turn the smoking glass around and quickly put 1-3 medium ice cube, then pour the cocktail in. 7. Rim the glass with a lemon twist and garnish with the said twist and a maraschino cherry, letting some juice dropping with it. 8. Enjoy!

My absoulte favourite old fashioned variation: 2oz metaxa, 10ml 1:1 demarara, 2-3 dashes Angostura orange bitters, 3-4 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters. The bitters can vary to taste. When done right it tastes almost like maple syrup

Love Four Rose's bourbons they have all been great in my opinion one of their single barrel varieties I've bought was 54% rye 34% corn and 12% barley for the mash and it was absolutely fantastic. I also loved that they gave the ratios for their mash on the side of the bottle

One of my faves to make is an Apple Old Fashioned. I got some apple butter at a farmer's market, used bourbon and Ango. I've added a splash of Yukon Jack Jacapple before just to bump the flavor up. I'm getting some Maple Pecan syrup in the mail soon, and you just KNOW I'm gonna booze that up. I'm thinking rye with this one maybe.

I actually just use granulated sugar for my old fashions cuz I don't feel like buying sugar cubes when I don't make them often enough to warrant investing the money or storage of a box of sugar cubes. Also that way I can use what ever sugar I want,or heck even honey. Seeing as I prefer bourbon over rye (unless it's bread) honey would actually be a nice match for bourbon. Hmmm,I wonder what other fruit oils you could use for it. I mean citrus isn't the only thing that has oil in the skin,though it is the easiest to use...hmmm,for once I'm actually having theories about things I could check out. Thanks for the video.

the fat isn't dissolving into ethanol. flavors that are dissolved in the fat are also soluble in the ethanol/water, so they transfer to the larger volume. you might get a better flavor soaking the whole fried rasher in booze ... i'm guessing this recipe originates in businesses that sell the bacon to customers and the fat is leftovers
@The_J485
@The_J485 6 жыл бұрын
It's not quite just "the principle of polarity" that keeps the water from mixing with the fat. It's that water is a polar solvent (it has positive and negative poles), and fat is a non-polar substance (it has no or negligible poles) so struggles to dissolve in water, whereas alcohol *is* non-polar (Not sure but IIRC it might actually be both polar and non-polar) so it can dissolve the fat.
@windhelmguard5295
@windhelmguard5295 5 жыл бұрын
the ethanol molecule can best be imagined as two halves, one being polar, the other non polar, which is why it can mix with both water and oils.
