@@booloffs.3912 Yes, I was born in Uruguay and live in Spain. But let me tell you, the "not to" construction instead of "to not" is what people are tought here in Spain. So I'm guessing that's what people from the UK actually say.

@@alejandroperez5368 Well, they say that here in the US also. For example "not to be trifled with" is a common phrase. "bulldogs are not to be trifled with" (roughly meaning, "Do not bother bulldogs.") But now that I am thinking about it again, both of the examples with the library seem odd to me. Most likely, you would say "I didn't go to the library to be distracted." think about it like this: in "A" you are negating the whole phrase "to be distracted". (so "to be distracted" is not your purpose.) In "B" you are negating "be distracted". (so "not be distracted" is your purpose.) They express slightly different ideas, but are both correct.

I will be highlighting the infinitives in this comment, *to be helpful* . Hello! English is my first language, and so I know most of what I know from what 'sounds right'. Whenever the olympiads come up, I have a hard time because I learnt it from practice, and not by rules. This was really helpful *to prepare* for my olympiad.
