Basic English Grammar: Giving reasons with infinitives

Simple English grammar lesson: An infinitive is when you have “to” plus a base verb. For example: “to make”, “to eat”, and “to be” are all infinitives. In this video, you will learn how to use infinitives when answering questions about why someone does something. For example, if someone asks, “Why are you going to the store?” you might reply, “To buy food.” Notice that we use the infinitive “to buy” to answer the question “why”. Such as in order to, so that, so as to, despite, despite the fact that, in spite of, and so on :) It really helps to improve writing skills, although it is more formal and more commonly used in written English but that doesn't change the fact that it is necessary :)

@@booloffs.3912 Yes, I was born in Uruguay and live in Spain. But let me tell you, the "not to" construction instead of "to not" is what people are tought here in Spain. So I'm guessing that's what people from the UK actually say.

@@alejandroperez5368 Well, they say that here in the US also. For example "not to be trifled with" is a common phrase. "bulldogs are not to be trifled with" (roughly meaning, "Do not bother bulldogs.") But now that I am thinking about it again, both of the examples with the library seem odd to me. Most likely, you would say "I didn't go to the library to be distracted." think about it like this: in "A" you are negating the whole phrase "to be distracted". (so "to be distracted" is not your purpose.) In "B" you are negating "be distracted". (so "not be distracted" is your purpose.) They express slightly different ideas, but are both correct.
