This is a good video for people getting into Fly Fishing, I have recommended to several of my friends getting into the sport. Without this it takes a bit longer to piece it together by yourself, thanks for the good info.

Well presented! I use a very thin little screwdriver instead of a nail, so I can feel and hold the handle with my left hand. It works for me...

I like to use the butt section of an old leader to tie to the fly line (with a nail knot) to provide a loop to attach leaders using the loop-to-loop method. Very surprised they would recommend cutting off the loop on a tapered leader to tie directly to the fly line, especially for beginners.
@tightlinesflyshop14 жыл бұрын
@flytyier11 This is true. You can do that with a reel with lots of porting. This is the prefered method for all reels and how they are normally set up in shops. Traditional non ported reels have smooth arbors and have no holes to thread backing through. The video shows how most reels should be rigged. Hope that helps.
@tightlinesflyshop14 жыл бұрын
@flytyier11 yes and no. We sell the braided loops and they do hinge a lot and hold water in the web. If you choose to go loop to loop, purchase a fly line with an integrated loop or have a shop whip a loop in the fly line. Hope that helps.

Helpful article for a newbie fly fisherman here. Thank you. Can't wait to get out there. I have the backing and fly line all set up. Do I have to use a tippet with a 9 foot 4X6.4 lb leeder or can I just tie a fly directly to the tapered leeder?
@footsgrandson10 жыл бұрын
I think one thing that's important to say here is that one should tie the nail knot with the smaller line to the larger line (ie. tie nail knot with backing to fly line; and tie nail knot with leader to fly line) The fly line was the larger of the two in both cases. A beginner (that would include me) might try to tie the nail knot with the fly line onto the backing or the leader, which would not work!

@fullstrutn9 жыл бұрын
why so much backing ? Can't you make a larger diameter reel spool.? Just asking but it seems a waste,kinda' like 150 yards of line on a 303 Zebco when you fish mainly ponds.
@flytyier1114 жыл бұрын
When you tie on your leader its much more effective to just buy a braided loop and inch worm it on to your flyline . This braided loop will also make your flyline last alot longer.

6W-WF Fly Line. or 6 Weight - Weight Forward Fly-line Also any regular dacron backing from any fly shop should be alright, just ask for fly line backing.

watched other vids with same stuff, but no one explains why backing line is used. what is wrong with using just the fly line? why not just fill the entire spool with fly line?
@Twofinbluna20209 жыл бұрын
+heidbrain youd run out of space really quick. Salmon can spool your reel in a matter of seconds. Backing allows you that much more line because its thinnger so you can fight those bigger fish

+Andre Johnson On a brand new 9 foot leader you do not need to add tippet right away. The leader includes a 3 foot section of the tippet out of the package. It is a personal preference if you choose to add it out of the package on not. Many anglers have a difficult time turning over a leader much longer than 9 feet. www.tightlinesflyshop.com
