When you check his patrom again he provided us with the full "other Geoffs/Jeff's" video. So much fun. :) Their name badges reflect some of the many ways that some reactors mangle his name. :) He said it took him 80 tries to make it sound decent. And yes I did join your Patreon too , at a low leverl, as I also support Geoff and VoicePlay.

Thank you once again for a reaction that is both so detailed and informative, while remaining so enjoyable to watch as well! I do find it really interesting that although it took him those 80 tries to get that C1 recorded for the video, he has since that time released a tiktok of him singing it live that takes him through three lines of the song, dropping 3 and a half octaves from his starting point down to that C. I can't help but be reminded that it's been nearly three years since Layne asked him to hit an E1 for the ending of Oogie Boogie's Song. That note and phrase also took him quite a while to do initially, and then lots more practice before he attempted to sing it in a live setting. I know that basses are generally considered to be lucky in that they can usually expect their range to continue to deepen with age, but Geoff's continuing to push himself to expand his range and abilities is certainly admirable. It wouldn't really surprise me to learn that, in another three years time, he may well have a lower 'consistently reachable lower range' than he does today. (Of course, I also admire the fact that he has also stressed that it's more important to be a 'better' singer than to be a 'lower' singer.) I love opera, but am ashamed to say that I didn't realize until very recently (since I grew up listening to it on audio recordings, television programs and the movie theater presentations of the Met performances instead of sitting in a theater to view a live performance) that it was of course developed during a time when there was no mechanical amplification of the human voice available. Given that, what is typically the lowest note that an opearatic bass is expected to sing?
@BangYongguk-sf8ly

Noice. Geoff is honsetly crazy idk how he practices tho. Ive been practicint subs for 1 or 2 years. I do it everyday throughout the day suddenly. My lowest subharmomic is A1 and its still A1. I really want to get that G1. But thats not working for me, instead 2nd subharmonics are happeing to me. Btw lowest note is E2 and im prolly a baritone by judging my own timbre.
@huldradraco
@huldradraco 2 жыл бұрын
well, Geoff said hitting the C wasn't the hard part, it was hitting it with a good tone that was hard, as it easily just sounds like a burp, lol. he has to induce light trauma to his vocal cords to get good tone on anything below C#1

Whew! I was afraid you were going to stop before you got to the end. Thank you for the great analysis. And I love seeing you smile through the whole thing. I know that when I’m watching I’m grinning like a fool. I don’t know what you’re talking about a lot of the time because I have absolutely no musical training. But I have learned a lot from you and other informed reactors and I am always so grateful that you are so even handed in your comments. If there’s something you’re not crazy about, you make that criticism is a lot of grace. And when there’s something that truly deserves a shout out you give it wholeheartedly. I’m glad that you pointed out the difference between hitting a low note and hitting a low note consistently and musically. I have seen comments from people saying “oh I can do that”. But the difference is that they can’t do it consistently, and it may be low but it may not sound very good. I am anxious to see your reaction and analysis to their cover of Running up that Hill. There are some really interesting things that Geoff does that I haven’t heard before. And I would love to know how he’s doing that.🤨(And be sure to wait until the Patreon reel starts!)

As always, LOVED your analysis. It's incredibly interesting to watch and listen the reactions and comments and explanations of someone who really KNOWS what he's talking about, and not just because he knows the theory, but because he actually PRACTICES it daily and professionally. Also, I love the respect you show not only to Geoff, but to EVERY artist you react to / analyse, and this is something that strucks some deep strings in my soul. I really appreciate it, it's something that is becoming less and less common, and to perceive it in your words and attitude is a breathe of fresh air for me. ❤ Oh, and BTW... Kudos for the Bass Gang stuff. You guys are not getting the success, the following and the positive critique you deserve, not by far. I try to make as many friends and people watch your videos as I can, but I'm a drop in the ocean, you guys have a distinct personality, and to me you are the 4th element of the "a cappella" QUADRIfecta, and think of it as an appreciation. I LOVE your work and I hope there will be more soon. Thank you for all you do.

Great analysis! As always, you pointed out and explained things I hadn't noticed or couldn't figure out on my own, no matter how many times I've watched and listened. I wasn't familiar with the original. Have a new appreciation for JD Sumner. Geoff clearly had so much fun with this, and Eli with the lighting and Layne on the camera, and Kathy throwing stuff to him/at him. We hadn't seen Geoff dance since Monster Mash. (It's so fun when Wolfman figures out he has hips.) It may have taken him 80 tries to get a good C1 for this, but just like expanding his range down for Oogie Boogie, it seems he's added a new note to his tool chest. He posted a Tik-Tok of him singing the very end, with nothing more than his phone's camera and mic, and cleanly hit the C1. Of course we don't know how many takes he did before the one he posted but I'm guessing a lot less than 80. You had me worried you were going to miss the funny bit at the end. Seems to be a new habit of both Geoff and VoicePlay -- keep playing until the Patreon credits roll or you'll miss good stuff. Can't wait to see your reaction to their latest, Running Up That Hill. The song is everywhere these days so it might pull in some viewers new to you.

Your JD Sumner name drop sent me down such a nostalgia rabbit hole. My family were really into the Gaithers when I was growing up, and I always remember his close friendship/rivalry with George Younce. I thought for my whole childhood that they really hated each other, but it wasn't until much later that I realised they were actually really close. If anyone is interested, there's a compilation of them where they are interviewed about each other, totally taking the Mick. Honestly, that rabbit hole made me so happy after I had finished watching this video, so thank you for your unintentional part in sending me down that!

Excellent analysis as usual Peter. 👏👏👏 Geoff is hysterical in this. I love the different spellings on his name tags. Have you looked at his video on hearing loss yet? A very good discussion. I also noticed Avi's 2 year old niece wearing headphones as hearing protection when they took her to his L.A. show at the Troubadour and other children at other artists' performances as well. Oh and on vocal technique can you at some point look at Avi's layered choruses on his new album? How do you produce that? And as a fellow bass how the heck does he get that high in spots like both the lead and chorus of "He Don't Love You Right"! Glad to see you back Peter on analysis even though the Bass Gang songs were fun.

He clarified that it took 80 takes not just to hit the note, because hitting it alone isn't such a problem - it's that it takes a lot of tries before he can get a musical tone out of it once he's down that low rather than it just sounding like a croak. That's some dedication!

it would be crazy to see peter react to a bass battle of the "big 3" bass singers (being Avi Kaplan, Tim Foust, and Geoff castellucci) it would be interesting to have insight from a bass that is just as low if not lower than them

Excellent review, analysis, explanation, and demonstrations. Would think that you might want to react to Eric Hollaway @thatbassvoice and his duet of this doing C1 in chest/throat mix, and his other videos too. He is a Basso Profundo and a full on Oktavist. Enjoy. Stay safe and stay awesome.
