He saw the life that looks pretty awesome and enjoyable from the outside and went inside of it. That life changed his style (hairs) at the very first, then he felt broken (bathroom). He was in shock and couldn't recognize himself with his new style. He was confused like "what are all these people doing here" (party scene) about the life he went inside of. Meanwhile, there was a guy inside of Dan's head (kissing guy), who wants to live that life forever and have fun, but other person inside of his head doesn't want to live that life and tries to look away. Then, Dan finds himself at the really center of that life (girls who kissing Dan), everything was extra and fake (their make ups). He missed his old, ordinary, but real and good life (his parents) for a moment. Then he realized that living in that enjoyable life was a bad idea and it wasn't that enjoyable. So he listened the ordinary guy who was inside of his head, and started to run from that life, but the life he was inside of didn't allow him to leave it (bus scene). So he tried to hide himself with a mask (his eye make up), and started to run from that life again. But he was so much in it, so it was really hard to escape. The guy inside of his head was following him, parties were all around him, but he didn't give up and he managed to escape from that life, and woke up in his normal life. But he had damages once, he was never going to be same again (his hairs didn't come back).

in the bathroom scene, he steps out of the tub, and he is grabbing his side, like he had a cut or got shot there or something.... what do you think it means?
@mikepaul1696 жыл бұрын
Just venturing a guess here, but it looked like someone harvested one of his organs (a kidney, perhaps) to sell on the black market - he woke up in a tub full of ice (which I believe is what illegal organ harvesters use to numb the "patient" instead of anesthesia), and his side was bleeding because when he put his hand to his side, it came back covered in blood. As far as what that might symbolize... perhaps he's saying that lifestyle stole a vital part of him. IDK, just guessing here...
@seckinaktunc6 жыл бұрын
I agree with Mike. I said "he felt broken" for it, but his comment is deeper. Makes sense either way in my opinion.

alright, so I saw a few connections to other Bastille's videos. Dan waking up in a bath seems like a parallel to the girl from Bad Blood, who also was in the bath. the cult thing seems similar to what we saw in Blame and also the background looks kind of similar to the room the band sits in Send Them Off! music video. also, probably not related but the part of Dan celebrating his birthday and the way it is filmed reminded me of Laura Palmer video

This song reminds me of my favorite person and I. We've snuck out at 3 am just to walk around and talk, we've cut through our (small) city, walked train tracks, across bridges, across a state route, through the woods, and by the river. We always ride in the back seat, and not just symbolically. I don't know, its just something I've always wanted. It's truly a different world at night.

@KatLoverz1236 жыл бұрын
I've watched this 3-4 times and have no clue what's going on, so here's just some observations/thoughts to help me with piecing it all together (lol) 1. Dan only has a cut on his nose in some scenes, and I feel like that may be important in figuring out the sequence of events or differentiating between which scenes are real or not. Because obviously, not all these scenes are real (maybe none are), at least not in the literal sense. I have a small inkling that maybe the scenes with the cut are real, but that's just me and not backed up by anything 2. He swaps between wearing only a sweater or a jacket over it throughout and I feel like this probably has reasoning behind it. Aside from the scenes with Dan lying down alone, I've noticed the scenes with just his sweater on seem generally grimmer (getting yelled at by the girl, the stomach wound bit, etc), while the ones with his jacket on are... more high points? Like him being at the party, or him with the drag queens (which is an iconic scene btw). It's possible jacket = highs and sweater = lows of nighttime. The mania and depression of escapism, especially considering that's the gist of the song in the first place. 3. The couple making out appears twice, both times with Dan, and the second time they're handcuffed together (and so is Dan), so they're most definitely linked with Dan in some way. The man in the couple has long hair the first time, and shaved hair the second, so maybe it can be interpreted that that man is supposed to represent Dan, maybe either about the idea of being handcuffed/chained to a relationship, or, more likely, something along the lines of getting hooked on more sexual escapism. Which we know isn't impossible if you've heard Comfort of Strangers. 4. The bit with the blue face paint is something I have no clue about and I just keep thinking of teenage mutant ninja turtles. It's possible there's a link to the cut on the bridge of his nose? It also does conjure some super hero imagery, so it could be an allusion to that, possibly. 5. General colour schemes are green, blue, red, and orange. Blue often is used for the party scenes, green for the grimmer scenes (he's often wearing his sweater in these scenes), red for the particularly bizarre scenes/the less dark scenes (eg. the drag queens), and orange for before and after everything takes place. I have no conclusions from these, just observations, so I don't know. Maybe it's just to help distinguish the various phases of the night, maybe there's some deeper meaning involving colour combinations, etc I might add to this if there's more, plus I'm open to ideas and stuff. also 6.when he walks into the drag queen room the song says :"and fall from heaven straight through hell" and the scenes in this room are red lighted so does this room symbolises hell ? i am not sure 7.the lyrics mention the song :"love will tear us apart" which the soundtrack of the movie Donnie Darko(i havent seen it but this might be helpful to someone who has) 8.the girl from the kissing couple ,the girl shouting at dan and the white dressed girl from the ritual look very much alike (i cant tell if they're the same person or not)

I also thought of teenage mutant ninja turtles lmao. And one thing I noticed was that the the cut on his nose is similar to the one in the World Gone Mad music video, so maybe they're connected in some way? Idk. Also I love "Imagine if I put this much effort into my academics" 😂

I viewed the cult scene as a direct reference to that? Something to look more into or perhaps we’ll see it in further songs?

2:13 I don't know why that bit creeps me out but it does, I maybe it's because of the camera quality making it look like an old video but we go into first person view or how it looks like someone's using a torch in the dark when we go into first person, I don't know it's just kinda creepy to me for some reason.

YES! I knew I couldn't be the only person that gets creeped out and anxious in that bit. It really triggers my anxiety. Everything looks so weird like some sort of distorted dream. I don't know how to explain this feeling. It's creepy for sure.
@hohey48694 жыл бұрын
Yeah I kinda understand it. Maybe it reminds you of some crime videos.

The song and this video capture the parallel universes of a night time, as Dan Smith said in the interview. Quarter past midnight---one person goes to sleep and dreams, while another person's life has started. Dan starts off singing, having a drink with a group of people. "Good times, bad decisions". Ever been drunk and did silly things? I think shaving off the hair is still part of reality. The succeeding events of "waking up" in absurd locations are happening in a dream. At 0:27 on the floor, Dan closes his eyes and the first "waking up" happens [in a party--an alternate reality that can happen quarter past midnight]. When we dream, we always wind up in one place not knowing how we get there. For the sake of keeping in line with the theme of the song, all these "dreams of Dan" can happen in reality at midnight. Partying, seance, sex, getting arrested, involved in a crime, alone in the street, celebrating a birthday, midnight fights, etc. The funny thing about Bastille videos is that they're known to be cryptic and confusing. It leaves to many interpretations to some fans, some can be very deep and you'll be like "whaaaat"? Lol But for me, this time it's not that hard.

[LYRICS] [Verse 1] It's a quarter past midnight As we cut through the city Yeah yeah yeah The streets are getting restless Good times bad decisions Yeah yeah yeah It's a quarter past midnight And the sirens are mending some hearts But we're the losers on the back seats And your love will tear us apart It's a quarter past midnight Still avoiding tomorrow It's a quarter past midnight But we're just getting going [Chorus] We keep on running Running through a red light Like we're trying to burn the night away Away oh away This is my favorite part oh Help me piece it all together darling Before it falls apart oh Help me piece it all together [Verse 2] It's a quarter past midnight And the speakers are blowing Yeah yeah We want the bodies on the billboards Not the lives underneath them Yeah yeah yeah And now we're crawling out the walls again And its a quarter past twelve And you said we'd leave this place in dust And fall from heaven straight through hell [Bridge] We never know what we have We never knew what we had [Chorus] We keep on running Running through a red light Like we're trying to burn the night away Away oh away Why are we always chasing after something Like we trying to throw our lives away Away oh away This is my favorite part oh Help me piece it all together darling Before it falls apart oh Help me piece it all together [Verse 3] I can't remember I can't remember I can't remember I can't remember It's a quarter past midnight And the secrets are flowing Our lips are getting looser I don't know what I'm saying We never knew what we had I never know what I've had [Chorus] We keep on running Running through a red light Like we're trying to burn the night away Away oh away Why are we always chasing after something Like we trying to throw out lives away Away oh away This is my favorite part so Help me piece it all together darling Before it falls apart Help me piece it all together

At 0:53 when Dan sings "This is my favourite part" does it refer to the kidney that got stolen? It's one of those late night myths/rumours where people knock you out and steal your kidney for money. Would also explain the ice bath, to help keep him under and numb the pain.
